Precipitation is measured with rain gauges (mm or inches) and radar (reflectivity). Weather maps show fronts (cold, warm, stationary, occluded), pressure systems (high pressure = fair weather, low pressure = storms), and isobars (lines of constant pressure). Weather forecasting uses numerical weather prediction (NWP) – supercomputers solve fluid dynamics equations (primitive equations) for the atmosphere. The first weather forecast (1861, Admiral FitzRoy, UK). Global forecasting models: GFS (US), ECMWF (Europe), ICON (Germany), UKMO (UK). Weather prediction accuracy has improved dramatically – a 5-day forecast today is as accurate as a 3-day forecast in 1995. Climate is defined by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as 30-year averages (current normal period 1991-2020). Climate classifications include Köppen system (tropical, dry, temperate, continental, polar). Climate zones are influenced by latitude, altitude, proximity to oceans, prevailing winds, and ocean currents. Weather vs climate example: a cold day in winter is weather; the fact that winters are colder than summers is climate.

The water cycle is powered by solar energy and gravity. Evaporation from oceans (86% of atmospheric moisture) and other water bodies. Transpiration from plants (10%) – together called evapotranspiration. Sublimation (ice to vapor directly) from snow and ice. Condensation requires cloud condensation nuclei (dust, salt, pollen) for water vapor to form droplets. Clouds are classified by height: high (cirrus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus – above 6 km), middle (altostratus, altocumulus – 2-6 km), low (stratus, stratocumulus, nimbostratus – below 2 km), and vertical development (cumulus, cumulonimbus – thunderstorm clouds). Precipitation forms via collision-coalescence (warm clouds) or ice crystal process (Bergeron-Findeisen – cold clouds). Types: rain (liquid), freezing rain (supercooled drops freezing on contact), sleet (ice pellets), hail (layered ice from strong updrafts in thunderstorms), snow (ice crystals). Runoff flows into rivers, lakes, oceans. Infiltration recharges groundwater aquifers. Groundwater moves slowly (meters to kilometers per year) and discharges into springs, rivers, or oceans. Humans affect the cycle through reservoirs, groundwater pumping, irrigation, and land use changes (urbanization increases runoff).

Thunderstorm lifecycle (single cell): (1) Cumulus stage – updraft dominates, no precipitation yet. (2) Mature stage – updrafts and downdrafts coexist, precipitation begins, lightning and thunder occur. (3) Dissipating stage – downdraft dominates, precipitation decreases, storm weakens. Single-cell storms last 30-60 minutes. Multi-cell clusters or squall lines can last hours. Supercells are long-lived (2-6 hours), rotating thunderstorms (mesocyclone) with a tilted updraft, capable of producing large hail (golf ball to softball size), strong winds (downbursts >100 km/h), and tornadoes. Lightning is a giant spark of static electricity between positive and negative charges within cloud (intra-cloud), cloud-to-cloud, or cloud-to-ground. Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes the tallest objects. Thunder is the sound of rapidly expanding superheated air (up to 30,000°C – 5x sun surface temperature). The time delay between lightning and thunder (5 seconds per mile, 3 seconds per km) gives distance. Hail forms when updrafts carry water droplets above freezing level, where they freeze and grow by colliding with supercooled water. Stronger updrafts produce larger hail. Hail can damage crops, roofs, and vehicles. Flash flooding occurs when heavy rain falls faster than ground can absorb or drain. The National Weather Service issues thunderstorm warnings for winds >93 km/h (58 mph) or hail >2.5 cm (1 inch). The United States experiences about 100,000 thunderstorms annually, with Florida having the most (80-100 days/year).

Tornado formation requires a supercell thunderstorm with a mesocyclone (rotating updraft). Strong wind shear (changing wind direction and speed with height) creates horizontal rotation. The updraft tilts this rotation into the vertical, forming a mesocyclone. If the mesocyclone tightens and descends, a wall cloud forms, then a tornado. Tornadoes most common 3-9 PM, April-June. Peak season for southern states is March-May; northern states June-July. Tornado alley has shifted eastward in recent decades to "Dixie Alley" (Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee). Warning lead time increased from <5 minutes (1980s) to 13-15 minutes (current) due to Doppler radar (NEXRAD – Next Generation Radar). Doppler radar measures rotation signatures (velocity couplet) and debris ball (tornado debris signature). Hurricane formation requires: warm ocean water (heat and moisture source), atmospheric instability, high humidity, Coriolis effect (provides spin – absent at equator, so no hurricanes within 5° latitude), low wind shear (no changing wind with height to disrupt organization), and a pre-existing disturbance (tropical wave). Hurricane categories (Saffir-Simpson scale): Category 1 (119-153 km/h) – very dangerous winds, some damage. Category 2 (154-177 km/h) – extensive damage. Category 3 (178-208 km/h) – devastating damage, major hurricane. Category 4 (209-251 km/h) – catastrophic damage. Category 5 (252+ km/h) – catastrophic damage, power outages weeks to months. Hurricane hazards: storm surge (rising water pushed by winds – greatest threat to life), high winds, heavy rainfall (flooding), tornadoes. Evangelista Torricelli invented the mercury barometer (1643). Aneroid barometers use a flexible metal cell. Digital barometers use MEMS sensors. Pressure gradients (differences over distance) generate wind – wind blows from high to low pressure, with strength proportional to gradient. Coriolis effect (Earth's rotation) deflects wind to the right in Northern Hemisphere, left in Southern Hemisphere. Isobars (lines of constant pressure) on weather maps show pressure patterns. High pressure (H, blue) – sinking air (subsidence), suppresses cloud formation, clear skies, light winds, clockwise outflow in Northern Hemisphere. Low pressure (L, red) – rising air (convection), clouds, precipitation, counterclockwise inflow (cyclonic), strongest winds. Pressure tendency (rising/falling) indicates weather changes: rapidly falling pressure (1+ mb/hour) signals approaching storm. The Coriolis effect is a consequence of Earth's rotation (once per day) and the fact that points at different latitudes have different rotational speeds. At the equator, rotational speed is 1,670 km/h (1,040 mph); at 45° latitude, it's 1,180 km/h; at poles, zero. When an object moves north from the equator, it retains the higher eastward speed, appearing to deflect right relative to the ground. The Coriolis effect is crucial for meteorology: it causes large-scale wind patterns like the prevailing westerlies (30-60° latitude), trade winds (0-30°, blowing toward equator), and polar easterlies. It also creates cyclonic rotation: low-pressure systems rotate counterclockwise in Northern Hemisphere (cyclonic), clockwise in Southern Hemisphere (anticyclonic). Hurricanes and typhoons require Coriolis effect to spin – which is why they don't form within 5° of the equator. In oceanography, the Coriolis effect creates Ekman transport (surface water moves 45° relative to wind, forming gyres). In ballistics, long-range projectiles (artillery, missiles) and sniper shots must account for Coriolis deflection. Foucault pendulum (Léon Foucault, 1851) visually demonstrates Earth's rotation – the pendulum's plane of oscillation rotates due to Coriolis effect. The Rossby number (ratio of inertial to Coriolis forces) determines when Coriolis matters – for large-scale (weather) or long-time motions, Rossby number <1; for small-scale (tornadoes, dust devils), Rossby number >1 and Coriolis negligible.

Air masses are classified by source region: Arctic (A, extremely cold), Polar (P, cold), Tropical (T, warm), Equatorial (E, hot). Maritime (m, moist) or Continental (c, dry) modifiers – e.g., cP = continental polar (cold, dry from Canada/Siberia), mT = maritime tropical (warm, moist from Gulf of Mexico). On weather maps: cold fronts (blue line with triangles pointing movement direction), warm fronts (red line with semicircles), stationary fronts (alternating blue triangles and red semicircles), occluded fronts (purple line with alternating triangles/semicircles). Cold front passage: temperature drops sharply, pressure rises, wind shifts (usually NW in NH), skies clear after front passes. Cold fronts move 20-40 km/h. Warm front passage: temperature rises, pressure falls, wind shifts (SE to S to SW in NH), precipitation ends, clouds thin. Warm fronts move 10-20 km/h. Dryline is a moisture front (common in Texas/Oklahoma) separating dry air from moist air – triggers severe thunderstorms without temperature change. Frontogenesis is the process of front formation; frontolysis is weakening. Norwegian cyclone model (Bergen School, 1910s-1920s) established modern frontal analysis (Vilhelm Bjerknes, Jacob Bjerknes, Tor Bergeron). Surface fronts often have upper-level support from jet streams (Rossby waves). Conveyor belt models explain precipitation patterns: warm conveyor belt (WCB), cold conveyor belt (CCB), dry intrusion.

A sunflower is a plant! Plants are amazing living things that can make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. Unlike animals, plants do not eat other living things. Instead, they use energy from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air, and water from the ground to create their own food. Plants come in all shapes and sizes – from tiny blades of grass to huge oak trees.

The roots have two main jobs: they anchor (hold) the plant in the ground so it does not blow away, and they absorb (take in) water and nutrients from the soil. Nutrients are like vitamins for plants – they help the plant grow strong. Some roots we eat, like carrots, potatoes, and radishes!

The stem supports the plant and acts like a transportation highway. Water and minerals travel upward from the roots through the stem to the leaves. Food made in the leaves travels downward through the stem to the roots. Some stems we eat, like celery and asparagus. Tree trunks are actually stems – just very thick, woody stems!

Leaves need sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food. This process is called photosynthesis – which means "putting together with light." The leaf uses energy from the sun to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar (food for the plant) and oxygen (which we breathe!). That is right – plants give us the oxygen we need to live!

The main job of a flower is to make seeds. Seeds grow into new plants, so flowers help plants reproduce (make more of themselves). Flowers attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and bats with their bright colors and sweet smells. When a bee visits a flower, pollen sticks to its body and gets carried to the next flower – helping the plant make seeds!

Plants need sunlight to make their own food! Without sunlight, a plant cannot perform photosynthesis and will eventually die. That is why plants grow toward windows and why trees in the forest grow tall – they are reaching for the sun. Plants also need water (without it, they dry out), air (for carbon dioxide), and soil (for nutrients like nitrogen and minerals).

The first thing to come out of a seed is the root (called a radicle). It grows downward because of gravity – it is trying to reach the water and nutrients in the soil. Then the stem (called a shoot) grows upward toward the light. The stem carries the first leaves up into the sunlight so the plant can start making its own food. This process of a seed starting to grow is called germination!

Plants give us oxygen to breathe! During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide (which we breathe out) and release oxygen (which we need to breathe in). That is why forests are called the "lungs of the Earth." Plants also give us food like apples, carrots, rice, and wheat. Without plants, animals (including humans) could not survive. We need plants, and plants need us to protect them!

Evergreen trees stay green all year! Their leaves are usually needle-shaped and have a waxy coating that helps them hold onto water during cold winters. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall to save water and energy during winter. In the spring, they grow brand new leaves. That is why you see bare trees in winter – they are deciduous!

A seed is the first stage of a plant's life! Inside the seed is a tiny plant called an embryo. The seed also has stored food to help the baby plant grow until it can make its own food through photosynthesis. When conditions are right (water, warmth, air), the seed germinates and a new plant begins to grow. That is the amazing circle of plant life!

Gregor Mendel was born in 1822 in Austria. He became a monk and conducted his groundbreaking genetic experiments in the monastery garden, despite facing challenges like failing his teaching certification exams twice.

Mendel chose garden peas for their ease of cultivation, distinct traits, and ability to be self- or cross-pollinated. He studied seven specific traits in over 28,000 plants over eight years.

The Law of Segregation states that alleles separate during gamete formation, and each parent contributes one allele to the offspring. This explains why traits can reappear in later generations.

The Law of Independent Assortment states that genes for different traits are inherited independently, allowing for the mixing and matching of traits in offspring.

Dominant traits are expressed when at least one dominant allele is present, while recessive traits require two recessive alleles to be expressed. This explains why some traits can skip generations.

A Punnett square is a grid used to predict the genotypes and phenotypes of offspring from a genetic cross, based on the principles established by Mendel.

Mendel's work was rediscovered in 1900 by three independent scientists: de Vries, Correns, and von Tschermak. This recognition launched the field of modern genetics.

Darwin's theory of evolution needed a mechanism of inheritance, which Mendel provided. Darwin's theory explains how species change over time, while Mendel's laws explain how traits are passed from one generation to the next.

Mendel's work laid the foundation for modern genetics. Today, we understand that genes are segments of DNA located on chromosomes, and his laws remain central to our understanding of inheritance.

Mendel's work was overlooked because of obscure publication, mathematical complexity, lack of prestige, and resistance from the scientific community to the idea of discrete hereditary units.

Dissolving sugar is a physical change! In a physical change, the substance changes form but not its chemical identity. Examples of physical changes: melting ice, boiling water, crushing a can, dissolving sugar. In a chemical reaction, new substances are formed. Signs of a chemical reaction: color change (iron rusting from silver to brown), temperature change (exothermic releases heat, endothermic absorbs heat), gas production (bubbles when vinegar reacts with baking soda), precipitate formation (cloudy solid appears when two solutions are mixed), and light emission (glow sticks, fire). The Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. Therefore, the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products.

Reactants are vinegar and baking soda! The chemical equation is: CH₃COOH + NaHCO₃ → CH₃COONa + H₂O + CO₂. The reactants are on the left of the arrow; products on the right. The fizzing (CO₂ gas) is a sign of a chemical reaction. In a chemical equation, the number of atoms of each element must be the same on both sides (balanced equation). Lavoisier discovered the Law of Conservation of Mass, which states that mass is conserved in chemical reactions. This means the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. In the vinegar and baking soda reaction, if you did it in a closed container, the mass would stay the same. In an open container, the CO₂ gas escapes, so the mass appears to decrease. That is why the reaction seems to lose mass – the gas leaves the container.

Exothermic releases heat! The word "exothermic" comes from "exo" (out) and "thermic" (heat). Combustion (burning) is highly exothermic. The burning of fuel releases heat that we use for heating, cooking, and engines. Endothermic reactions absorb heat; the reaction vessel becomes cold. For example, when baking soda reacts with citric acid in water, the mixture gets cold. Some chemical cold packs use an endothermic reaction (often ammonium nitrate dissolving in water). Photosynthesis is endothermic – plants absorb light energy (from the sun) to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. The energy change in a chemical reaction is due to the difference in bond energies between reactants and products. Exothermic reactions have more energy in the bonds of the products (energy is released). Endothermic reactions have more energy in the bonds of the products (energy is absorbed).

The fire triangle is fuel, oxygen, and heat! Fire extinguishers work by removing one of these: water removes heat (cools the fire), carbon dioxide removes oxygen (smothers the fire), and some extinguishers remove fuel (foam blankets the fuel). Combustion is a rapid oxidation reaction. Slow oxidation (like rusting) produces heat slowly and does not create flame. Complete combustion (enough oxygen) produces carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete combustion (limited oxygen) produces carbon monoxide (a poisonous gas) and soot (carbon particles). That is why you should never run a generator or car in an enclosed space – carbon monoxide can kill you. The "fire tetrahedron" adds a fourth element: chemical chain reaction. Some extinguishers (like halon) interrupt the chain reaction. Always practice fire safety!

OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain! Oxidation and reduction always occur together. If one substance is oxidized (loses electrons), another substance must be reduced (gains those electrons). In a zinc-copper battery (Daniel cell), zinc atoms lose electrons (oxidized) and become Zn²⁺ ions, while Cu²⁺ ions gain electrons (reduced) and become copper metal. The flow of electrons through an external wire is electricity. Rusting is a slow oxidation of iron in the presence of oxygen and water. Iron loses electrons to become Fe²⁺ and eventually Fe³⁺ (iron(III) oxide, Fe₂O₃, rust). The Statue of Liberty originally was copper-colored (copper metal). Over time, the copper oxidized to form a green patina (basic copper carbonate). The patina protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. Not all oxidation is bad – the formation of the protective patina on copper and the oxide layer on aluminum (aluminum oxide) prevents further corrosion.

Fe + S → FeS is a synthesis reaction! Two elements combine to form a compound. The opposite of synthesis is decomposition (AB → A + B). Synthesis reactions are common in industry: ammonia synthesis (Haber process: N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃) produces fertilizer. The formation of water (2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O) is a synthesis reaction. The reaction of iron and sulfur to form iron sulfide is exothermic – the mixture glows red hot. After the reaction, the iron sulfide is not magnetic (unlike iron). Synthesis reactions are also called "combination reactions." In a more general sense, any reaction where two or more reactants combine to form one product is a synthesis. This is one of the five main types of chemical reactions (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion).

2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂ is a decomposition reaction! Water decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen when electricity is passed through it (electrolysis). The bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen gas can be collected. Decomposition reactions are the opposite of synthesis reactions. Another example: hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) naturally decomposes into water and oxygen (2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂). Rayleigh scattering is the reason! John William Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) explained it in 1871. The intensity of scattering is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wavelength (λ⁴). Blue light (wavelength ~470 nm) is scattered about 16 times more than red light (wavelength ~650 nm). On the Moon (no atmosphere), the sky appears black even in sunlight. On Mars, the sky appears pink-red because of iron-rich dust. Water droplets (much larger than molecules) scatter all wavelengths equally, making clouds white (Mie scattering). The sky on a clear day is not perfectly blue; it has a gradation from deeper blue overhead to paler near the horizon. The human eye is more sensitive to blue than violet, so we see blue. The sky can appear purple/violet if you have a camera with a special filter (the human eye is less sensitive to violet). The color of the sky affects plant growth (plants use red and blue light for photosynthesis). Rayleigh scattering also explains why sunsets are red: sunlight passes through a longer path of atmosphere, scattering away most blue light. Volcanic eruptions can inject particles that cause vivid sunsets (more scattering). The Tyndall effect is scattering by particles larger than molecules (but smaller than wavelength). The blue color of eyes is also due to Rayleigh scattering (not blue pigment). The sky is blue during the day, but at night we see stars. Astronauts see a black sky in space. The sky on Earth would be white if the atmosphere were thicker (like on Venus, but Venus's atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide with thick clouds).

Pruney fingers are caused by the nervous system! For a long time, people thought it was just due to osmosis (water entering skin cells). Brain cooling is a leading theory! Studies show that yawning frequency decreases when a cold pack is placed on the forehead and increases when a warm pack is placed. Other theories: yawning increases oxygen intake (but this has been disproven because oxygen levels do not change). Yawning may also stretch the lungs and increase heart rate, promoting alertness. Physics explains it! The toast rotates as it falls. Table height and the toast's rotational speed determine the angle of impact. For a typical table (~2.5 ft / 0.75 m), the toast has time to rotate about 180 degrees. If the toast starts with the butter side up, it will land butter side down. If the toast starts butter side down, it will land butter side up (but people usually drop toast with butter side up). The effect is not random; it is deterministic based on height and angular velocity. A higher table would allow the toast to rotate multiple times, making the outcome random. A lower table would cause the toast to land butter side up. The experimenter's bias: we remember when toast lands butter side down because it is more frustrating. The butter side is heavier? Actually, butter does not significantly affect the center of mass. The phenomenon is sometimes called the "buttered cat paradox" (joke: you can't have a perpetual motion machine). Adding salt lowers the freezing point (which is why salt is used on icy roads). The freezing point depression is a colligative property.

Supernova 2023ixf (M101 galaxy, 21 million light-years) was brightest in a decade. Neutrino detectors (IceCube, Super-K) and gravitational wave observatories (LIGO, Virgo) now provide early warnings for supernova explosions. A supernova within 30-50 light-years could cause mass extinctions (ozone layer damage, cosmic rays). Betelgeuse (640 light-years, red supergiant) could go supernova in next 100,000 years – will be bright as a full moon.
