Newton's First Law of Motion, also called the law of inertia, was formulated by Sir Isaac Newton in his work Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687). Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its velocity. This includes changes to the object's speed or direction of motion. A practical example is how a passenger in a moving car lurches forward when the car suddenly stops – the passenger's body continues moving forward due to inertia. Without an external unbalanced force (like a seatbelt), the passenger would maintain their original motion. This law fundamentally changed our understanding of motion and force, forming the basis for classical mechanics.

Newton's Second Law establishes a precise quantitative relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. Misconceptions: evolution is not "just a theory" (meaning guess), humans did not evolve from monkeys (we share a common ancestor), and evolution does not have a goal or direction (it is not progressive).

Darwin's finches are the correct answer! They became a classic example of adaptive radiation (evolution of multiple species from a common ancestor). The ground finch has a thick beak for cracking seeds; the tree finch has a slender beak for insects; the cactus finch has a long beak for cactus flowers. Reproductive isolation mechanisms include prezygotic barriers (habitat isolation, temporal isolation, behavioral isolation, mechanical isolation, gametic isolation) and postzygotic barriers (reduced hybrid viability, reduced hybrid fertility, hybrid breakdown). The concept of a species is complex; there are over 20 different species concepts (morphological, biological, phylogenetic, ecological). The biological species concept does not apply to asexual organisms (bacteria, many plants) or fossils. Speciation can take thousands to millions of years; however, some rapid speciation has been observed in plants (polyploidy can create a new species in one generation). This is why finishing the full course of antibiotics is important: stopping early may leave the most resistant bacteria alive. Overuse of antibiotics in agriculture (to promote growth in livestock) is a major contributor. New antibiotics are being developed, but bacteria evolve faster than we can invent new drugs. Other examples of observed evolution: pesticide resistance in insects (e.g., DDT resistance in mosquitoes), herbicide resistance in weeds (e.g., glyphosate-resistant pigweed), and heavy metal resistance in plants. The evolution of resistance is a classic demonstration of natural selection in real time. Some bacteria have evolved resistance to multiple antibiotics (superbugs). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a common superbug in hospitals. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared antibiotic resistance one of the top ten global public health threats.

Tiktaalik is a famous transitional fossil! It lived about 375 million years ago. Its fins had wrist-like bones that could flex and support weight, suggesting it could prop itself up in shallow water. This was a crucial step in the evolution of vertebrates from water to land. Critics of evolution often point to "missing links," but every fossil discovery fills a gap and creates new gaps. The theory predicts that transitional forms should exist, and they have been found. The fossil record also shows patterns like mass extinctions (e.g., the asteroid that killed the non-avian dinosaurs 66 million years ago) and adaptive radiation (rapid diversification after extinctions).

Homo habilis was the first tool-maker! They made simple stone flakes for cutting meat and scraping hides. Australopithecus (including Lucy, lived about 3.2 million years ago) walked upright but had a small brain (about 400-500 cm³). Homo habilis had a larger brain (about 600 cm³). Homo erectus had an even larger brain (about 900-1,000 cm³) and was the first to control fire, leave Africa, and use more advanced tools (Acheulean hand axes). Genetic drift is the correct term! The bottleneck effect occurs when a population is drastically reduced (by a natural disaster, disease, or hunting), and the surviving population has different allele frequencies (by chance). The Northern elephant seal population was hunted to about 20 individuals in the 1890s; the current population of over 100,000 has very low genetic diversity. The founder effect occurs when a small group leaves to start a new population; the new population's gene pool reflects only that small group. The Amish population in Pennsylvania has a high frequency of Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (a form of dwarfism) because one of the founders carried the allele. Genetic drift can cause harmful alleles to become common or beneficial alleles to be lost by chance. In large populations, the effects of genetic drift are minimal. The neutral theory of molecular evolution (Motoo Kimura) proposes that most evolutionary change at the molecular level is due to genetic drift, not natural selection. Genetic drift is a major evolutionary mechanism, especially in small populations like endangered species.

Humans share a common ancestor with chimpanzees! Evolution does not claim that humans evolved from modern apes; it claims that humans and modern apes share a common ancestor. That common ancestor was neither a human nor a chimpanzee but an earlier ape species. Misconceptions often arise from the phrase "humans evolved from monkeys" – which is incorrect. Evolution is not progressive; it does not have a goal (it is not "trying" to make humans). Bacteria are just as "evolved" as humans; they have been evolving for the same amount of time (3.5 billion years). Evolution does not explain how life began (abiogenesis); it explains how life changed after it began. The theory of evolution is one of the most supported theories in science; the "theory" in "theory of evolution" means a well-substantiated explanation, not a guess (that would be a hypothesis). Individuals do not evolve; populations evolve over generations. Your children may have different traits than you because of evolution, but you yourself do not evolve during your lifetime (except through epigenetic changes, which are not heritable in the same way). Acceptance of evolution is nearly universal among scientists (about 99% of scientists accept evolution). Religious leaders (including the Catholic Church) accept evolution as compatible with faith (theistic evolution). The Catholic Church teaches that evolution is not incompatible with belief in God; the Church accepts the scientific consensus on evolution.

A dog is an animal! Animals are heterotrophs (they must eat other organisms to get energy). They are also motile (can move) at some stage of their life. Animals range in size from microscopic (zooplankton) to enormous (blue whale). The animal kingdom contains over 1.5 million described species, but scientists estimate there may be 8-10 million total. Animals are divided into vertebrates (about 65,000 species) and invertebrates (over 1.4 million species). Invertebrates include insects, spiders, worms, snails, jellyfish, and crustaceans. Vertebrates include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. All animals are eukaryotes (cells with a nucleus). The study of animals is called zoology. Animals live in nearly every habitat on Earth, from deep oceans to high mountains to deserts. Animals have evolved a vast range of adaptations for survival. Humans are animals too!

A frog is a vertebrate! Vertebrates have an internal skeleton (endoskeleton) made of bone or cartilage. Fish are the oldest vertebrates (evolved over 500 million years ago). Amphibians (frogs, salamanders) can live on land and in water. Reptiles (snakes, lizards, turtles) have scaly skin and lay eggs on land. Birds have feathers, beaks, and lay eggs. Mammals have fur/hair, produce milk for their young, and are warm-blooded (maintain constant body temperature). Vertebrates have complex organ systems: circulatory (heart and blood vessels), respiratory (lungs or gills), digestive, nervous (brain and spinal cord), and sensory organs (eyes, ears). The human backbone has 33 vertebrae. Vertebrates can be found in all habitats. Some vertebrates (like fish) live only in water; others (like birds) can fly. Vertebrates are more complex than most invertebrates, but invertebrates are far more numerous and diverse.

A whale is a mammal! Whales and dolphins (cetaceans) evolved from land mammals that returned to the ocean about 50 million years ago. Bats are the only mammals that truly fly (others glide). Mammals are endothermic (warm-blooded), meaning they can maintain a constant body temperature regardless of the environment. This allows them to live in cold climates (polar bears, arctic foxes).
