Introduction

Spelling bee competitions are getting harder each year. The inclusion of newer words and varying competition formats are making such spelling competitions more and more difficult.
Be it at the local level or the state one, a spelling bee event is now no longer limited to just the English dictionary. As more and more words originating from foreign languages are entering the ranks of different spelling bee word lists, participants are finding it more exhausting to deal with the expanding volumes of words and their subsequent meanings.

Thus comes the need of regular practice.
And these practices cannot be static, meaning that you cannot just buy a bunch of books and learn from them. You have to be more dynamic, learn new words as they come, and proceed accordingly.
Hence, your best option is to learn and practice from an online spelling learning platform.
That is where Spelling Bee Ninja and its World Online Spelling League (WOSL) comes into play.

What is the WOSL?

To put it in simple terms, the World Online Spelling League is a set of online spelling tournaments that are organized by SBN, and participated by students from around the world. Schools can take part in these tournaments with their students. You can participate individually as well. It is a game-changer in the world of online spelling practice.

Joining a Tournament

To join a WOSL tournament, follow the steps discussed below.

Log into your SBN account. In case you do not have an account on Spelling Bee Ninja, do not worry. You can always create a new SBN account. It will take you less than a minute to create your Spelling Bee Ninja account, and then you can carry on with the rest of the steps.

Use the filter to narrow your search and select the tournament you want to join from the Tournament page, you can join tournaments flagged by the status: Can Join, ongoing and closed tournament cannot be joined.

The aim of the tournament participants is to out-score the others and rank as high as possible. Using the “Take Test” option, participants can take the tests whenever they want, as long as it is during the duration of the tournament.
The Training button will help them train for the online spelling bee tournament. Training is possible both before and after the tournament starts. Although the training scores are not valid tournament scores, they will still be valid for world rankings, as well as stored for general student statistics.

Upcoming Tournaments

Check out the Tournaments page to know about upcoming online spelling bee events at the World Online Spelling League.
You can participate in the events with the “Can Join” status. The rest are either on-going or closed, meaning admission is no longer possible there. The Grade column defines the suitability of the tournament for varying grades of students. Once completed or on-going, students can check the rankings from the Ranking column. The tournament pages also describe the difficulty of the spelling bee tournaments, how much time each student has, whether or not they will get the definition of the word to be spelled, and so on.

Training for the Tournaments

Training for the tournament will allow you to gather a bit of experience.
This is not just in terms of learning the spellings, but you will also understand how the format works, what to expect from the online spelling tournaments, and what could prove to be a bit challenging for you. Hence, it is vital that you train for the tournaments using the Train button located within the Tournament page.

Receiving Prizes

Each of the tournament pages has its own rankings. When you click the Rankings button, it will take you to the rankings of that specific tournament. Rankings are visible for both on-going as well as closed tournaments.

As for the prizes, they will vary from tournament to tournament. First, second, and third position holders will be awarded official WOSL certificates. They will also get different prizes like a month-long free subscription to Spelling Bee Ninja’s student package, or a free copy of the SBN Spelling Bee Manual.
Schools might offer their own prize pool for their students, but that is completely up to them to decide. Participants of the WOSL will also earn points and badges which will be displayed on their public profiles.

Advantages of the SBN WOSL Ranking System

Spelling Bee Ninja’s World Online Spelling League is here to change the game, taking the monotony out of the online spelling bee tournaments, and giving it new life.

Signing up will let you explore the various challenges you might face in the actual tournaments. It is a great way to hone your skills, and know what you are adept at before jumping into the real-world spelling bee tournaments.

Join with your classroom

Schools should take the most advantage of these tournaments in the WOSL. A teacher can well-prepare their students for upcoming spelling bee tournaments by setting up online spelling tournaments on the WOSL platform. It will be a single-stop platform to control all the games, choose the difficulties, and set your own rules. Such online tournaments are more practical than in-class spelling games or practice.

As much as all this sounds too good to be true, it is how it is. Spelling Bee Ninja is going all out for all your spelling bee enthusiasts so that you can ace your upcoming spelling bee competition. Be it the SCRIPPS Spelling Bee, a State-level spelling bee, or a random online spelling bee tournament, you will manage to ace them all if you actively take part in the SBN World Online Spelling League.

So subscribe, participate, and see the results for yourself. Get your friends and schoolmates to join you too. There is no way the SBN-WOSL will disappoint you. You will get to witness visible signs of improvement in your spelling, and ability to remember the various new words you learn along the way.

It is officially licensed by The Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. The Japan Spelling Bee is Japan’s national level spelling bee competition. This spelling bee is one of the most popular spelling bees around the world.

Purpose of the Japan Times Bee

The spelling bee has a long and overwhelming history. Ever since its inception about a century ago in the United States, this spelling event has spread all across the globe, bringing young minds together under a single roof as they test their spelling skills to the limit.
The spelling bee is one of the most competitive events organized for school children. The event not only promotes this healthy competition among the participants, but it also helps develop their spelling and vocabulary skills.
Apart from that, the spelling bee can also help them understand etymology, how root words work, pronunciation, and so on.
Japan is one of the most developed and academically advanced countries in the world. To ensure further development of the youth, they adopted the spelling bee. Collaborating with the Scripps Spelling Bee, the Japan Times Bee has gone on to become quite popular.

Registration and enrollment

Firstly, schools willing to participate at the Japan Spelling Bee are to register at the Scripps Spelling Bee website as well as at the Japan Spelling Bee website. Not being able to follow this procedure will result in the failure of the spelling bee registration.
Then, the registered schools are to organize a spelling bee among their respective students. The winner from each of the participating school is then sent to the Japan Spelling Bee held in March.
Finally, the champion is sent to the US to take part at the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals held in the same year.
Note: Home schooled kids can participate in the Japan Spelling Bee too. In that case, they will have to register with their affiliated school or institution, and that school or institution has to be registered for the Japan Times Bee as well as for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, just like the other schools. Home schooled kids will have to participate in the school bee of their affiliated institutions.

Competition rules

Each speller has to spell their word out loud on stage. They are allowed to make request for the definition of the word. The language of origin, and the use of the word in a sentence can also be requested.

Spellers, however, are not allowed to go back and change the order of their spelling once they have misspelled a word or delivered a letter out loud which they then realize is wrong.

When is the next Japan Spelling Bee?

The 11th Japan Spelling Bee is scheduled to take place on March 7th, 2020. Next year, the Japan Spelling Bee will take place at Josai University.

One of the yearly agenda you shouldn’t miss out on is the Australian Spelling Bee competition in July. This online competition is free and open to all students from year 3 to year 8. Even though it’s only eligible for specific ages, everyone from all ages can use the practice worksheet. Especially those who want to improve their English or want to know some difficult words.

What is the Australian Spelling Bee

The official name for the competition is the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee. As the name implies, in the competition, the contestant must correctly guess a word with as few hints as possible. They must attempt 30 words given and only have 25 25-second time limit for each word. It requires focus, a wide vocabulary, and confidence to keep on going with the competition.

And because it’s an online competition, there is no room for cheaters and favoritism. The machine can’t differentiate the contestants behind the screen. Therefore, it’s all about how well their preparation is.

For a student to be eligible to participate, they need to be in a school with a running program or already participating in the Australian Spelling Bee contest. They also need to submit proof that they go to school there and can take the test on their own.

The teacher acts as the liaison between the school and the competition. They are the ones who prepare the students or bees and submit all necessary paperwork during the registration period. This includes the consent forms signed by the parents.

The registration period opens at about the same time as the school round. Therefore, the teacher must have the paperwork ready to submit when they are open. They can add up to 50 students to their class and adjust their grades accordingly.

The website for the Australian Spelling Bee has all the important details on registration and the teacher’s role in the competition. They also have practice sheets based on the categories as well as the dictionary as the preferred reference.

Two weeks after the school round, the territory or state finals ensued followed by the national finals to complete the competition. For each stage, the finalists and winner names will be sent out to the teacher’s emails.

The Student Categories

Since it receives strong enthusiasm every year, they set three distinctive categories for the students. Each category has specific difficulties and complexity in the questions. The system will put the students in respective categories based on their years. However, the teachers can adjust the grade if they think the student can take more challenges.

The distinction is easy, students in years 3 and 4 are in the green category with the least complex words. While year 5 and 6 are in orange with medium difficulty. They will encounter several complex words and hard-to-spell within the 30 words they must attempt.

And finally, the highest level or the red category. It has year 7 and 8 students or younger ones who qualify for the category. They will have more complex and unique words than the other categories.

When and How to Practice

Ideally, the teacher must have prepared their bees weeks if not months ahead. This will ensure the students are familiar with the difficulty level. Moreover, it also will help the students keep their focus on answering the questions.

Each teacher has different methods of preparing their bees. But one of the most popular methods is by using the worksheet of highly repetitive words. An example of the worksheet is available on the Australian Spelling Bee website.

However, you also can write a personalized list, especially if the bees have issues with several words. You can print a table of words and hints on each column. Then test the bees by folding or cutting the words column, leaving the hints only. Don’t forget to keep the time and have them write down the guesses as well.

After every 30 words or so, you can check for accuracy. As a starter, having up to 60 words is good as a variation/ However, this number works when you only prepare for less than five bees.

If you have more bees, you can pair them up or have them work in groups. They can quiz each other and the rest act as the timekeeper and checker. It’s a matter of how you can streamline the training process and keep it efficient.

Creating groups of bees also can help them to be more competitive. They can keep their eyes on each other as well as become more focused on answering. Many reports say they have better accuracy during practice in a group. Anyhow, you need to remind them that it’s they’re participating as individuals.

Some Last Words

When building the worksheet, make sure that you choose the words based on the right category. It would be unfair to choose words such as “prolapse”, “consciousness,” and “ asphyxiation” for the green bees.

The competition uses the Collins English Dictionary as their primary reference for spelling and definition. You also can use the online version of the Collins English dictionary for some age-appropriate definitions. To make things fun during practice, you can include some made-up words and definitions to see if the bees catch on.

You also can use the records from the previous year’s competitions to see which words have a higher frequency than the rest. Mix up the words to expand their vocabularies. And when you see a highly talented bee, you need to thread a fine line between encouraging and coercing them to participate. Don’t forget that the competition is online only, which means you also need to get the bees used to the system.

When you know someone eligible to participate in the Australian Spelling Bee, don’t hesitate and encourage them to join in. They will not regret the experience as preparing for the competition can be a lot of fun too. You can choose the difficulties and which worksheet to use. Furthermore, you also can improve your focus and vocabulary at the same time.

Regional oral rounds: These rounds are conducted on a miss and out basis, until only one speller remains. The regional winner and first runner-up from each center will go on to spell at the final round.

Finals: The top 2 spellers from each regional contest advance to the finals. The final rounds are conducted completely in an oral format as described above. While spelling may seem straightforward, international spelling bees bring together talented students from diverse countries to celebrate linguistic mastery and cross-cultural learning. This guide provides a deep dive into the world of international spelling bee competitions—their origins, structures, preparation strategies, and opportunities they create for students worldwide.

The Origins of Spelling Bees

The spelling bee traces its roots back to the United States. The term “bee,” meaning a community gathering for a shared task, was adopted in the mid-19th century. The first recorded national spelling contest took place in the U.S. in 1925, leading to the creation of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which remains the most prestigious spelling competition globally.

Over the years, spelling bees expanded beyond U.S. borders. Today, numerous international versions exist, giving students from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East the chance to showcase their spelling skills on a grand stage.

Major International Spelling Bee Competitions

Several spelling bees are recognized internationally, each with unique features:

While each competition has its own rules, most follow a similar format:

Some competitions also include written vocabulary tests, definitions, and etymology challenges to ensure well-rounded knowledge.

Training for an International Spelling Bee

Spelling bee competitions are being organized around the world every year.

These contests range from regional levels, all the way up to the national levels and then to the global level. The global spelling bee circuit has come quite far and has seen a lot of development over the past two decades.

As young students and learners are becoming more and more interested to take part in such spelling activities, the organizers and spelling bee enthusiasts are doing everything in their power to ensure that these young souls are provided with the proper platform and guide to pursue their goals.

With these thoughts in mind, spelling bees have been established around the world. Today, we will be seeing 8 such popular spelling bees from all across the globe.

1. Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling bee is the most popular spelling bee event in the whole world.
Inaugurated back in 1925, this US based spelling bee hosts participants from all over the world, with majority of these participants being from the United States.
The competition is held annually during the month of May. Participants must not be older than 14 years and they must not have passed the 8th grade.
This spelling bee is probably the most competitive one out there.
This is probably one of the reasons why 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee ended up having 8 WINNERS, INSTEAD OF 1 (because they ran out of words)!
The Scripps National Spelling bee also endorses a few other spelling bees around the world.
It also accepts participants from other regional spelling bee competitions held in the United States.

The Indian Spelling Bee is one of the most popular spelling bees in the Sub-continent and the biggest spelling bee event in India. The competition is open for school kids (Grade 1 to 9).
Since India is such a vast country, the spelling bee takes place in two stages.
In the first stage, the competition is held regionally as each school is put under one of four regions (north, south, east, and west). Placeholders from these regional rounds then battle it out in the national round held in Kolkata, India. The national level spelling bee is held during the month of August.

Throughout the mid-18th century, spelling contests which were often called as spelling matches were quite common in schools.
Even Benjamin Franklin recommended the use of such contests in a school proposal published in 1750.
The National Spelling Bee or more commonly known as Scripps National Spelling Bee has been regularly held since 1925.
Since its inception, Spelling Bee has amassed a massive following and is seen as a platform to fulfill academic aspirations. The main reason for popularity- parents want to see their children succeed and want the world to acknowledge their brilliance and might.
Every year, more than 11 million kids fight their way to the top, dodging spelling challenges at school, city and regional level spelling bees to become one of the few hundred finalists for the national finals. The Spellingbee Contest is not just an event, it is the story of our culture, language and hard work of millions of kids who experience the first taste of persistence, commitment, resourcefulness, discipline and even failure, to evolve in life.

2. Spelling bee and Language

Spelling Bee is the story of modern English language which has been an instrumental part of the American lifestyle for years. The aspiring students are not just competitors, they turn into passionate etymologists who learn to dig deeper into lingual patterns, scrounge the history of words, master the mysteries of the language and find their way to lingual supremacy.

In a way, Spellingbee is not just about spellings of some random words- it’s about how our language was built, developing vocabulary, grammar, leading and comprehension skills and evolving oneself as an individual who is highly analytical and pragmatic.
Moreover, it’s not just about how the language evolved over the years, it’s about how the national challenge evolve a child’s skills and how he deals with the challenges beyond. It wouldn’t be wrong to say participating in Spellingbee is like an adventurous saga that requires a child to invest countless hours into research, mastering his fears of spontaneous recitation and tackling the unforeseeable challenge.

In the end, all of this hard work and dedication colludes into an annual gala where hundreds of promising young minds gather to find out who has been the most committed to achieve something great in life.

3. The Bee in the World

Spelling Bee has been on the American academic landscape for more than two hundred years.
According to several sources, the first usage of a similar word like ‘spelling bee’ dates back to the year 1769 when it might have been called the ‘spinning bee’.
Spelling competitions were a common feature of the American landscape by the middle of the eighteenth century.
Benjamin Franklin, one of our founding fathers even suggested Spelling Bee Contests to be a regular part of schooling curriculum in one of his proposal in the year 1750.
By the nineteenth century, Spelling challenges had been a popular aspect of American life, both for children and the adults. It was part of the pop culture and even found mentions in novels like The Hoosier Schoolmaster- a bestseller published in 1871 in which the hero falls in love with a woman competitor in a spelling match. Spelling fights was even mentioned in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.

Spelling Bees were commonly known as spelling matches at that time. The phrase got the modern uplift in the mid 1870s where first time the match was called as a Spelling Bee.
The earliest known documented evidence of the phrase “spelling bee” dates back to 1850 and appeared in print in 1875.
The Term ‘Bee’ referred to a social gathering or event with a common goal, back then, which in this case was to compete on knowledge of spellings.
A key motivation for the competition was The Noah Webster’s spelling books which were first published in 1786 and known informally as ‘The Blue-backed Speller’.
The Webster’s spelling book was a prerequisite part of the syllabus of all elementary school Kid in the United States for five (5) generations. As of now, the main-key reference for the competition is Webster’s Third New International Dictionary which contains approximately 473,000 words presently, which students should have the capability to spell.

5. Growth of the Spelling Bee

National Spelling Bee, the way we see it today, is a national event held in Washington D.C. every year, where winners of local and regional bee contests congregate to compete in the national level competition. Managed and run by E.W. Scripps Company,
The National Spelling Bee contest has an interesting history attached to it.

The first known instance of a nationwide spelling competition is known to date back to the year 1908 which was organized by the National Education Association.
But the initiative failed to gather much attention at that time.
Later, during the year 1925, The Courier-Journal, Louisville, a famous newspaper house and organizer of state-level spelling contest in Kentucky for grade school children, asked other American newspapers to collaborate and sponsor children for participating in a national level contest.

By the end of June 1925, more than 2 million children participated in local level competitions out of which 9 were shortlisted- representing one of the nine participating newspapers in the national initiative. These nine contestants competed at a national-level contest in Washington.
Frank Neuhauser, an 11-year-old kid from Louisville won the inaugural contests by spelling the word ‘Gladiolus’. He won a cash prize of $500, back then.
The event proved extremely popular and soon other newspapers joined forces to conduct national-level competition every year.
In the year 1941, Scripps Newspaper group, won the sponsorship for National Spelling Bee contest, while local newspapers continued representing students at the regional level.
In 1958, National Spelling Bee contest became more structured when Merriam Webster affiliated with the National Spelling Bee to launch Webster’s Third Unabridged dictionary as the official arbiter of any word’s spelling.
Along with that, the company also began publishing a Spelling Bee study guide for contestants.
Over the years, Scripps National Spelling Bee has turned into a national phenomenon. In its 92nd edition held in 2019, more than 565 contestants from all over the country participated against each other for the winning price.

Several documentaries and features have been made on the concept. Still, the passion and interest of the people hasn’t faded over all these years, even in the age of auto fills and spellchecks.

Spelling bees test more than just vocabulary—they build memory, concentration, and the ability to stay composed under pressure. Whether you’re a student preparing for a competition or someone eager to refine your language skills, success comes from effective practice, strategic learning, and a deep understanding of word origins. Mastering spelling isn’t just about memorization; it requires recognizing patterns, roots, and phonetics to navigate complex words with confidence.

A strong preparation strategy includes breaking words into syllables, studying prefixes and suffixes, and familiarizing yourself with common spelling rules. Regular practice with mock competitions helps reinforce retention and improve recall speed. Additionally, using mnemonic devices and associating words with images or stories can make learning easier. Just like in an online casino instant payout system, where quick thinking leads to rewards, a sharp and well-trained mind in spelling bees ensures accurate and fast responses under pressure.

Build a Strong Word Foundation

A vast vocabulary is the backbone of any spelling bee champion. Understanding the origins, meanings, and structures of words can significantly improve recall and accuracy.

One of the best ways to expand your vocabulary is by studying word roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Many English words originate from Latin, Greek, French, and Germanic languages, and recognizing common patterns can help you spell unfamiliar words correctly. For example, the Greek root “philo-” means love, as seen in words like “philosophy” and “philology.” Similarly, the Latin suffix “-tion” indicates a noun, as in “celebration” or “formation.”

Reading widely is another powerful strategy. Books, newspapers, and academic articles expose you to new words in context, reinforcing spelling and comprehension. Creating a personal spelling journal to track challenging words, their definitions, and example sentences can further enhance retention.

To solidify learning, use flashcards or digital apps designed for vocabulary building. Apps like Quizlet or Spelling Bee Ninja offer interactive exercises that make studying engaging and effective. By consistently incorporating these techniques, you’ll develop a strong linguistic foundation that prepares you for even the trickiest spelling challenges.

Master Pronunciation and Phonetics

Pronunciation plays a crucial role in spelling accuracy. Many words contain silent letters, irregular stress patterns, or confusing vowel sounds that can mislead contestants. Understanding these nuances improves spelling performance and reduces errors during competitions. One of the most effective ways to strengthen pronunciation skills is by studying phonetics and recognizing sound patterns that frequently appear in complex words. A solid approach to mastering pronunciation includes:

Learning the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA): This system provides a standardized way to understand word pronunciation. It helps distinguish similar-sounding words like “colonel” (pronounced “kernel”) and “kernel” (a seed), ensuring greater accuracy when spelling unfamiliar terms.

Breaking words into syllables: Pronouncing each syllable separately before reconstructing the full word enhances retention. This technique works especially well for long or tricky words, making them easier to spell correctly.

Using auditory learning techniques: Listening to words spoken by native speakers and repeating them reinforces correct pronunciation. Apps like Forvo provide accurate pronunciations, while watching past spelling bee competitions helps contestants observe and adopt effective strategies.

Regular practice with phonetic exercises, syllable segmentation, and auditory reinforcement builds confidence in spelling unfamiliar words. Developing strong pronunciation skills not only improves accuracy but also sharpens overall language comprehension.

Develop Winning Memory Techniques

Memorization is a key component of spelling bee success, but traditional rote learning isn’t always the most effective approach. Instead, employing mnemonic devices, visualization, and association techniques can make word retention more efficient and enjoyable.

Mnemonics use creative memory aids to make spelling easier. For example, to remember how to spell “necessary,” think of the phrase: “Never Eat Cake, Eat Salad Sandwiches And Raspberry Yogurt.” Each capital letter corresponds to a letter in the word, making it easier to recall under pressure.

Visualization techniques involve creating mental images that connect with words. If you struggle with the word “accommodate,” imagine two beds inside a hotel room—symbolizing the double “c” and double “m.” These mental cues strengthen memory and make tricky spellings more intuitive.

Another powerful technique is the “story method,” where you create a short narrative incorporating the spelling of a difficult word. For instance, to remember “embarrassed,” you might picture yourself blushing with two red “r” s on your face. The more vivid and personal the association, the more likely you are to remember the spelling correctly.

Repetition also plays a crucial role in retention. Writing words multiple times, saying them out loud, and testing yourself frequently ensures that the correct spelling is firmly embedded in your memory. By integrating these memory techniques into your study routine, you’ll be better prepared to tackle even the most challenging words.
