One classic study found that mothers who believed their children had consumed sugar rated them as more hyperactive – when the children had actually received placebo (and vice versa), showing that expectation influences perception. The myth persists because: (1) Sugar is often consumed at parties, holidays, and celebrations – occasions that themselves cause excitement and altered routines; (2) Parents may unconsciously look for behavioral changes after sugar consumption; (3) Fatigue from sugar crashes (hypoglycemia) can paradoxically cause irritability and restless behavior that mimics hyperactivity. However, sugar does affect health: excess sugar contributes to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dental cavities, and cardiovascular disease. Artificial food dyes (particularly Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6) may affect a small subset of children with pre-existing ADHD, but the effect is small compared to medication and varies by individual. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting added sugar for other health reasons, not hyperactivity.

The "five senses" classification originated with Aristotle (384-322 BCE). Modern sensory neuroscience recognizes many more. Proprioception: sensors in muscles, tendons, and joints (muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs) tell your brain where your limbs are without looking – close your eyes and touch your nose. Equilibrioception: vestibular system in inner ear (semicircular canals detect rotation, otolith organs detect linear acceleration and gravity). Thermoception: separate receptors for warm (TRPV channels) and cold (TRPM8 channels). Nociception: pain receptors (nociceptors) detect tissue damage, mechanical pressure, extreme temperature, and inflammatory chemicals – different from touch. Interoception: sensors in organs detect hunger (stomach), thirst (osmoreceptors), suffocation (CO2/pH receptors), bladder fullness, heart rate, blood pressure, and nausea. Magnetoception: ability to detect magnetic fields (humans may have weak magnetoception through cryptochrome proteins in retina). Chronoception: circadian rhythm (suprachiasmatic nucleus) and interval timing (cerebellum, basal ganglia). Chemoreception: taste (5 qualities: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami) and smell (over 1,000 odor receptors). Touch itself includes multiple senses: light touch, pressure, vibration, stretch, and texture. Additional possible senses: sense of effort (motor command awareness), sense of time intervals, and even immune sensing (detecting pathogens via toll-like receptors).
