Why Conjunction Matters

As the name implies, a conjunction connects words, clauses, and phrases in a sentence. The roles depend on the context and the conjunction you choose. It also helps you to connect sentences and avoid using comma splices. Needless to say, conjunction is one thing that can do a lot to get your point across.

Types of Conjunctions

There are three types of conjunctions that you need to know. They are coordinating, subordinating, and correlative. Each type bears a different function in the sentence. Of course, you can always choose to memorize the conjunction words list. But you also need to understand each type to help you work with more variety of sentences.

Coordinating

This type of conjunction connects two parts of the sentence that is equal. For example, “I ordered a burger and fries.” As the conjunction, “and” connects two nouns in the sentence. Both burgers and fries are nouns.

But coordinating conjunction also connects two independent clauses. A good example here is “She drives a Volkswagen Beetle, and still wants the BMW.”

Subordinating

A subordinating conjunction connects the dependent clause with the independent one. While it may not be adding a new meaning to the sentence, but gives an explanation or additional context.

For example, “We had to walk here because my car broke down.” You can end the sentence with “We had to walk here.” But adding the information about the car gives context to the sentence.

Correlative

The difference between this type of conjunction is that it connects concepts almost exclusively. Unlike other types of conjunctions that only works to connect phrases and clauses, the correlative conjunction adds context by showing both clauses have equal importance.

An example of correlative conjunction is “Either you stop running or you’re getting tired.” The “either” and “or” gives context to the situation.

Conjunctions vs Prepositions

Now we come to the issue, what is the difference between conjunctions and prepositions? Can you use them interchangeably?

The primary difference is in the function. You need to remember that a preposition shows the context or relationship between the words in the sentence. And a conjunction connects the clauses and sentences.

Another difference is you can’t use prepositions independently in a sentence, but you can do that with a conjunction. Several words can act as both conjunction and preposition. One of them is by learning homophones. When you master the homophones word list below, you would not confuse to choose the correct words in your sentences. What is homophone

The word is derived from Greek that is ‘homo-‘ (same) and ‘-phone’ (voice or sound). So, the literal meaning is the same sound.
In detail, homophones are words that have similar pronunciations but are different in spellings and meanings. Compared to other languages, English has the most homophones word list in the world. It is because the words are mostly borrowed from other languages, and that is why the pronunciation of some words does not resemble the spelling.

Though they have similar pronunciations, if you listen more carefully, you will find some of the pairs below are slightly sounded out differently. Words list are word sets than can be named, saved and used for studying and taking spelling tests.

Lists can be printed, embedded on web pages and shared with classmates.

They can be public, private or visible only to students belonging to a user’s account.

The following paragraphs explain how to handle lists with SBN.

My Words section

This is a temporary list used as a basket to store words that will then be saved as Lists.

You will meet a lot of terms while navigating the SBN web app; for instance in report cards or while using the search engine or while browsing the “Words and Lists” section of the website.

Close to each word you will often find a button “Add” or “Add to my words” with a basket icon.

Pressing that button will add the related element in your basket, if the word is already present in “My Words”, you will find a “Remove” button instead.

Please keep in mind that “My Words” is just a temporary area and will be deleted when your session expires.

You can access to your temporary list anytime clicking “My Words” on top menu, the page will show the words contained in the list, the corresponding grade and the following action buttons:

Functions available in “My Words” Page

Copy
Copies the words contained in My Words in the device clipboard, separated by comma “,”, ready to be pasted somewhere else (a text file, a spreadsheet etc.)

Save
Saves the words into a new words list, a dialog box will appear asking to specify a name and a visibility scope, also see the paragraph “Create and delete a spelling list”.

Add to List
Adds the elements to an existing spelling bee words list, check the next paragraph for further details on how to create new lists.

Import your own lists
Import an arbitrary text snippet into “My Words”, for instance some term you got from the Merriam Webster dictionary or from anywhere else.

Imported elements could then be saved as a list, check the next paragraph for details on importing lists.

Empty
Delete all the elements contained in “My Words”.

Working with spelling lists

Now that we explained the purpose of “My Words“ section, we are ready to have a deeper look to spelling lists related operations.
Your personal spelling bee words list section is accessible from your account menu (the one labeled with your user name) click “My Spelling List”.

From here you have access to the features related to your Spelling bee words lists, described in the following paragraphs.

Create and delete a Spelling List

To create a new spelling list, click the “Create new list” button on top of the page, the spelling bee creation dialog will appear:

Specify a name for your list and a visibility; the visibility can be private, visible to students and public.

Private List
Choose “Keep this list private” if you want the spelling words visibility to be limited to your account, hidden from everybody else.

Visible to students
If you are a teacher and want the spelling words to be used by your invited students but hidden from everybody else, then choose “Make this list visible only to my students”.

Public lists
The third option labeled “Make this list visible to all the students of the world” will make your list public.
A public list can be viewed (not edited) by anyone that knows the list address.

A public list could be marked as “featured” by SBN staff and appear in the Featured List section of the website.

A public list can be embedded on any website by adding an html code snippet (see Embed a list into a webpage paragraph).

Click “Create” to proceed, your newly created list will be listed in the page, lists are alphabetically ordered.

Delete a list

To delete a previously created spelling list, from “My Spelling Lists” page, you can use the red button marked by a trash can icon corresponding to the list you want to be deleted.

Viewing and Editing spelling lists

To view a list from “My Spelling lists” page, click the list name in the table.

To edit a list for adding words or changing attributes, click the edit button in the corresponding row.

When viewing a spelling words list, you can switch to edit mode by pressing the “Edit” button on the top.

From the edit page, switch back to view mode by clicking the link labeled with the name of the list at the beginning of the page.

When in edit mode, use the “Change” button to change the attributes of your spelling list such as list name and visibility.

Add and import words to a list

There are two ways to add words to a list:

The first way is collecting the words into “My Words” section and then choosing the “Save” or “Add to List” (see paragraph My Words section).
The second method is to add your words directly into the list using the “Import words” feature.

To import words into your list,

First reach the Edit page for your list.

Click “My Spelling lists” under your account,

Then click the edit button corresponding to your list in the table.

To open the import dialog, click the “Import” button at the top of the page:

Enter in the text area the text you’d like to import in your list.

You can also paste them from another source like a web page or a text file.

Valid word separators are spaces, tabs, newlines, special characters, each word has to be at least three characters long and must be composed only of letters from the English alphabet.

Press Ok when ready to import, the content will be added to your list.

After import, the system will present a report of the procedure, the skipped ones and eventual errors occurred.

Remove items from a list

To remove specific elements from a list, first reach the list page in Edit mode, then click the “Remove” button corresponding to the word you want to remove.

In case you want to empty list, click the “Empty” button, as shown in the image below.

Take a Spelling test with a given list

Spelling Bee Ninja allows you to take spelling tests using your custom spelling lists.
Choose the “Spelling Test” option from a spelling list page (in both view and edit mode) to take a test using that list.
The new dialog will pop up and the selected list will be preset under the “Words Source” option, set the other options and press “Start Test” to start your test.
In case the spelling list used as words source contains less than the words necessary for the spelling test (that is the number of words set by the “Words per test” option), SBN will provide the missing words accordingly with the test parameters (such as student grade, difficulty level and so on).
The spelling test result will be marked as personal (see here the test options paragraph for further details).

Flash cards

The “Flash Card” button will show up a dialog containing Flash Cards for the current list.
Use this feature to memorize the words you have to learn, especially the one contained in the “Error List”.

Use the arrows on the sides to slide to next or previous card, on each card:

Click the word to open the word’s page in another tab/window.
Click the speaker icon just beneath the word to listen the pronunciation of the word.
Use the “Go to” drop down to jump to any word in the spelling list.

Embed a Spelling Words list into a web page

Custom Spelling Lists created with spelling bee ninja can be embedded in third party website. This feature provides a useful and easy to share spelling related home works with your students or to create words list pages in your own website in a snap.

The embedded list is presented as a table and has responsive layout to correctly show data on all kind of devices: desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones.

The embedded list will contain

The word, linked to its card in SBN. The page will eventually open in a new browser tab.
Speaker icons to hear the right pronunciations of the words.
The difficulty level (from Grade 1 to Grade 8 then High School and Very difficult).

To allow a list to be embedded into an external web page you have to set the list visibility to Public.

If your list is not public, please change its visibility.

Once you set the list as Public, choose the “Embed” button from in the list page (in view mode).

A dialog containing the html code for the list will pop up as in the image below.

Copy the html code in the dialog and paste it into your webpage.

If you want you can change the width and the height of the list within your page.

The list embedding service is provided for free to every SBN user.

Featured Spelling Bee Lists

This section of the Spelling Bee Ninja website offers public spelling lists that are well crafted by the SBN team.

These lists are available to be used by every user.

To access to the featured lists section choose “Words and Lists” on the top menu and then “Featured Lists”.

You will find here lists ready to be used for your training program, there are lists divided by student grade, but also themed lists, for example words coming from different roots such as Arabic terms, Japanese terms, Spanish terms and so on. Some lists are related to the previous edition of the spelling bee, some other are related to SAT test. Also, there are lists containing the most used English terms.

Adamant	A stone imagined by some to be of impenetrable hardness; a name given to the diamond and other substances of extreme hardness; but in modern mineralogy it has no technical signification. It is now a rhetorical or poetical name for the embodiment of impenetrable hardness. – Lodestone; magnet.
Admonish	To warn or notify of a fault; to reprove gently or kindly, but seriously; to exhort. – To counsel against wrong practices; to cation or advise; to warn against danger or an offense; — followed by of, against, or a subordinate clause. – To instruct or direct; to inform; to notify.
Adumbrate	To give a faint shadow or slight representation of; to outline; to shadow forth. – To overshadow; to shade.

Alias	Otherwise; otherwise called; — a term used in legal proceedings to connect the different names of any one who has gone by two or more, and whose true name is for any cause doubtful; as, Smith, alias Simpson. – At another time. – A second or further writ which is issued after a first writ has expired without effect. – Another name; an assumed name.
Ambivalent	Having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone.
Amenable	Easy to be led; governable, as a woman by her husband. – Liable to be brought to account or punishment; answerable; responsible; accountable; as, amenable to law. – Liable to punishment, a charge, a claim, etc. – Willing to yield or submit; responsive; tractable.
Amorphous	Having no determinate form; of irregular; shapeless. – Without crystallization in the ultimate texture of a solid substance; uncrystallized. – Of no particular kind or character; anomalous.
Anachronistic	Erroneous in date; containing an anachronism.
Anathema	A ban or curse pronounced with religious solemnity by ecclesiastical authority, and accompanied by excommunication. Hence: Denunciation of anything as accursed. – An imprecation; a curse; a malediction. – Any person or thing anathematized, or cursed by ecclesiastical authority.
Annex	To join or attach; usually to subjoin; to affix; to append; — followed by to. – To join or add, as a smaller thing to a greater. – To attach or connect, as a consequence, condition, etc.; as, to annex a penalty to a prohibition, or punishment to guilt. – To join; to be united. – Something annexed or appended; as, an additional stipulation to a writing, a subsidiary building to a main building; a wing.
Antediluvian	Of or relating to the period before the Deluge in Noah’s time; hence, antiquated; as, an antediluvian vehicle. – One who lived before the Deluge.
Antiseptic	Alt. Of Antiseptical – A substance which prevents or retards putrefaction, or destroys, or protects from, putrefactive organisms; as, salt, carbolic acid, alcohol, cinchona.
Antithesis	An opposition or contrast of words or sentiments occurring in the same sentence; as, “The prodigal robs his heir; the miser robs himself.” “He had covertly shot at Cromwell; he how openly aimed at the Queen.” – The second of two clauses forming an antithesis. – Opposition; contrast.

Approbation	Proof; attestation. – The act of approving; an assenting to the propriety of a thing with some degree of pleasure or satisfaction; approval; sanction; commendation. – Probation or novitiate.
Arbitrary	Depending on will or discretion; not governed by any fixed rules; as, an arbitrary decision; an arbitrary punishment. – Exercised according to one’s own will or caprice, and therefore conveying a notion of a tendency to abuse the possession of power. – Despotic; absolute in power; bound by no law; harsh and unforbearing; tyrannical; as, an arbitrary prince or government.

Archetypal	Of or pertaining to an archetype; consisting a model (real or ideal) or pattern; original.
Arrogate	To assume, or claim as one’s own, unduly, proudly, or presumptuously; to make undue claims to, from vanity or baseless pretensions to right or merit; as, the pope arrogated dominion over kings.
Ascetic	Extremely rigid in self-denial and devotions; austere; severe. – In the early church, one who devoted himself to a solitary and contemplative life, characterized by devotion, extreme self-denial, and self-mortification; a hermit; a recluse; hence, one who practices extreme rigor and self-denial in religious things.
Aspersion	A sprinkling, as with water or dust, in a literal sense. – The spreading of calumniations reports or charges which tarnish reputation, like the bespattering of a body with foul water; calumny.
Assiduous	Constant in application or attention; devoted; attentive; unremitting. – Performed with constant diligence or attention; unremitting; persistent; as, assiduous labor.

Camaraderie	Mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together.
Candor	Whiteness; brightness; (as applied to moral conditions) usullied purity; innocence. – A disposition to treat subjects with fairness; freedom from prejudice or disguise; frankness; sincerity.
Capitulate	To settle or draw up the heads or terms of an agreement, as in chapters or articles; to agree. – To surrender on terms agreed upon (usually, drawn up under several heads); as, an army or a garrison capitulates. – To surrender or transfer, as an army or a fortress, on certain conditions.

Commensurate	To reduce to a common measure. – To proportionate; to adjust. – Having a common measure; commensurable; reducible to a common measure; as, commensurate quantities. – Equal in measure or extent; proportionate.
Complement	That which fills up or completes; the quantity or number required to fill a thing or make it complete. – That which is required to supply a deficiency, or to complete a symmetrical whole. – Full quantity, number, or amount; a complete set; completeness. – A second quantity added to a given quantity to make it equal to a third given quantity. – Something added for ornamentation; an accessory. – The whole working force of a vessel. – The interval wanting to complete the octave; — the fourth is the complement of the fifth, the sixth of the third. – A compliment. – To supply a lack; to supplement. – To compliment.
Compunction	A pricking; stimulation. – A picking of heart; poignant grief proceeding from a sense of guilt or consciousness of causing pain; the sting of conscience.
Concomitant	Accompanying; conjoined; attending. – One who, or that which, accompanies, or is collaterally connected with another; a companion; an associate; an accompaniment.
Conduit	A pipe, canal, channel, or passage for conveying water or fluid. – A structure forming a reservoir for water. – A narrow passage for private communication.
Conflagration	A fire extending to many objects, or over a large space; a general burning.
Congruity	The state or quality of being congruous; the relation or agreement between things; fitness; harmony; correspondence; consistency. – Coincidence, as that of lines or figures laid over one another. – That, in an imperfectly good persons, which renders it suitable for God to bestow on him gifts of grace.
Connive	To open and close the eyes rapidly; to wink. – To close the eyes upon a fault; to wink (at); to fail or forbear by intention to discover an act; to permit a proceeding, as if not aware of it; — usually followed by at. – To shut the eyes to; to overlook; to pretend not to see.

Elegy	A mournful or plaintive poem; a funereal song; a poem of lamentation.
Elicit	Elicited; drawn out; made real; open; evident. – To draw out or entice forth; to bring to light; to bring out against the will; to deduce by reason or argument; as, to elicit truth by discussion.
Embezzlement	The fraudulent appropriation of property by a person to whom it has been intrusted; as, the embezzlement by a clerk of his employer’s; embezzlement of public funds by the public officer having them in charge.
Emend	To purge of faults; to make better; to correct; esp., to make corrections in (a literary work); to alter for the better by textual criticism, generally verbal.
Emollient	Softening; making supple; acting as an emollient. – An external something or soothing application to allay irritation, soreness, etc.
Empirical	Pertaining to, or founded upon, experiment or experience; depending upon the observation of phenomena; versed in experiments. – Depending upon experience or observation alone, without due regard to science and theory; — said especially of medical practice, remedies, etc.; wanting in science and deep insight; as, empiric skill, remedies.
Emulate	Striving to excel; ambitious; emulous. – To strive to equal or to excel in qualities or actions; to imitate, with a view to equal or to outdo, to vie with; to rival; as, to emulate the good and the great.
Enervate	To deprive of nerve, force, strength, or courage; to render feeble or impotent; to make effeminate; to impair the moral powers of. – Weakened; weak; without strength of force.

Ephemeral	Beginning and ending in a day; existing only, or no longer than, a day; diurnal; as, an ephemeral flower. – Short-lived; existing or continuing for a short time only. – Anything lasting but a day, or a brief time; an ephemeral plant, insect, etc.
Epistolary	Pertaining to epistles or letters; suitable to letters and correspondence; as, an epistolary style. – Contained in letters; carried on by letters.
Equanimity	Evenness of mind; that calm temper or firmness of mind which is not easily elated or depressed; patience; calmness; composure; as, to bear misfortunes with equanimity.
Espouse	To betroth; to promise in marriage; to give as spouse. – To take as spouse; to take to wife; to marry. – To take to one’s self with a view to maintain; to make one’s own; to take up the cause of; to adopt; to embrace.
Evanescent	Liable to vanish or pass away like vapor; vanishing; fleeting; as, evanescent joys. – Vanishing from notice; imperceptible.
Evince	To conquer; to subdue. – To show in a clear manner; to prove beyond any reasonable doubt; to manifest; to make evident; to bring to light; to evidence.
Exacerbate	To render more violent or bitter; to irriate; to exasperate; to imbitter, as passions or disease.
Execrable	Deserving to be execrated; accursed; damnable; detestable; abominable; as, an execrable wretch.
Exhort	To incite by words or advice; to animate or urge by arguments, as to a good deed or laudable conduct; to address exhortation to; to urge strongly; hence, to advise, warn, or caution. – To deliver exhortation; to use words or arguments to incite to good deeds. – Exhortation.
Exigent	Exacting or requiring immediate aid or action; pressing; critical. – Exigency; pressing necessity; decisive moment. – The name of a writ in proceedings before outlawry.

Flagrant	Flaming; inflamed; glowing; burning; ardent. – Actually in preparation, execution, or performance; carried on hotly; raging. – Flaming into notice; notorious; enormous; heinous; glaringly wicked.
Forbearance	The act of forbearing or waiting; the exercise of patience. – The quality of being forbearing; indulgence toward offenders or enemies; long-suffering.
Fortuitous	Happening by chance; coming or occuring unexpectedly, or without any known cause; chance; as, the fortuitous concourse of atoms. – Happening independently of human will or means of foresight; resulting from unavoidable physical causes.
Fractious	Apt to break out into a passion; apt to scold; cross; snappish; ugly; unruly; as, a fractious man; a fractious horse.

Adaptation	The act or process of adapting, or fitting; or the state of being adapted or fitted; fitness. – The result of adapting; an adapted form.
Garment	Any article of clothing, as a coat, a gown, etc.
Rebellious	Engaged in rebellion; disposed to rebel; of the nature of rebels or of rebellion; resisting government or lawful authority by force.
Adjourn	To put off or defer to another day, or indefinitely; to postpone; to close or suspend for the day; — commonly said of the meeting, or the action, of convened body; as, to adjourn the meeting; to adjourn a debate. – To suspend business for a time, as from one day to another, or for a longer period, or indefinitely; usually, to suspend public business, as of legislatures and courts, or other convened bodies; as, congress adjourned at four o’clock; the court adjourned without day.

Resignation	The act of resigning or giving up, as a claim, possession, office, or the like; surrender; as, the resignation of a crown or comission. – The state of being resigned or submissive; quiet or patient submission; unresisting acquiescence; as, resignation to the will and providence of God.

Applaud	To show approval of by clapping the hands, acclamation, or other significant sign. – To praise by words; to express approbation of; to commend; to approve. – To express approbation loudly or significantly.
Intercession	The act of interceding; mediation; interposition between parties at variance, with a view to reconcilation; prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of, or (less often) against, another or others.
Beggary	The act of begging; the state of being a beggar; mendicancy; extreme poverty. – Beggarly appearance. – Beggarly.
Boastful	Given to, or full of, boasting; inclined to boast; vaunting; vainglorious; self-praising.
Loathe	To feel extreme disgust at, or aversion for. – To dislike greatly; to abhor; to hate. – To feel disgust or nausea.
Steward	A man employed in a large family, or on a large estate, to manage the domestic concerns, supervise other servants, collect the rents or income, keep accounts, and the like. – A person employed in a hotel, or a club, or on board a ship, to provide for the table, superintend the culinary affairs, etc. In naval vessels, the captain’s steward, wardroom steward, steerage steward, warrant officers steward, etc., are petty officers who provide for the messes under their charge. – A fiscal agent of certain bodies; as, a steward in a Methodist church. – In some colleges, an officer who provides food for the students and superintends the kitchen; also, an officer who attends to the accounts of the students. – In Scotland, a magistrate appointed by the crown to exercise jurisdiction over royal lands. – To manage as a steward.
Buoyancy	The property of floating on the surface of a liquid, or in a fluid, as in the atmosphere; specific lightness, which is inversely as the weight compared with that of an equal volume of water. – The upward pressure exerted upon a floating body by a fluid, which is equal to the weight of the body; hence, also, the weight of a floating body, as measured by the volume of fluid displaced. – Cheerfulness; vivacity; liveliness; sprightliness; — the opposite of heaviness; as, buoyancy of spirits.
Methodical	Arranged with regard to method; disposed in a suitable manner, or in a manner to illustrate a subject, or to facilitate practical observation; as, the methodical arrangement of arguments; a methodical treatise. – Proceeding with regard to method; systematic. – Of or pertaining to the ancient school of physicians called methodists.
Celebration	The act, process, or time of celebrating.
Clothesline	A rope or wire on which clothes are hung to dry.
Trepidation	An involuntary trembling, sometimes an effect of paralysis, but usually caused by terror or fear; quaking; quivering. – Hence, a state of terror or alarm; fear; confusion; fright; as, the men were in great trepidation. – A libration of the starry sphere in the Ptolemaic system; a motion ascribed to the firmament, to account for certain small changes in the position of the ecliptic and of the stars.
Counselor	One who counsels; an adviser. – A member of council; one appointed to advise a sovereign or chief magistrate. [See under Consilor.] – One whose profession is to give advice in law, and manage causes for clients in court; a barrister.
Optic	The organ of sight; an eye. – An eyeglass. – Alt. of Optical

Crinkly	Having crinkles; wavy; wrinkly.
Crises	The point of time when it is to be decided whether any affair or course of action must go on, or be modified or terminate; the decisive moment; the turning point. – That change in a disease which indicates whether the result is to be recovery or death; sometimes, also, a striking change of symptoms attended by an outward manifestation, as by an eruption or sweat.
Peninsula	A portion of land nearly surrounded by water, and connected with a larger body by a neck, or isthmus.
Unison	Harmony; agreement; concord; union. – Identity in pitch; coincidence of sounds proceeding from an equality in the number of vibrations made in a given time by two or more sonorous bodies. Parts played or sung in octaves are also said to be in unison, or in octaves. – A single, unvaried. – Sounding alone. – Sounded alike in pitch; unisonant; unisonous; as, unison passages, in which two or more parts unite in coincident sound.
Velocity	Quickness of motion; swiftness; speed; celerity; rapidity; as, the velocity of wind; the velocity of a planet or comet in its orbit or course; the velocity of a cannon ball; the velocity of light. – Rate of motion; the relation of motion to time, measured by the number of units of space passed over by a moving body or point in a unit of time, usually the number of feet passed over in a second. See the Note under Speed.
Doubly	In twice the quantity; to twice the degree; as, doubly wise or good; to be doubly sensible of an obligation. – Deceitfully.
Presume	To assume or take beforehand; esp., to do or undertake without leave or authority previously obtained. – To take or suppose to be true, or entitled to belief, without examination or proof, or on the strength of probability; to take for granted; to infer; to suppose. – To suppose or assume something to be, or to be true, on grounds deemed valid, though not amounting to proof; to believe by anticipation; to infer; as, we may presume too far. – To venture, go, or act, by an assumption of leave or authority not granted; to go beyond what is warranted by the circumstances of the case; to venture beyond license; to take liberties; — often with on or upon before the ground of confidence.
Welfare	Well-doing or well-being in any respect; the enjoyment of health and the common blessings of life; exemption from any evil or calamity; prosperity; happiness.
Essay	An effort made, or exertion of body or mind, for the performance of anything; a trial; attempt; as, to make an essay to benefit a friend. – A composition treating of any particular subject; — usually shorter and less methodical than a formal, finished treatise; as, an essay on the life and writings of Homer; an essay on fossils, or on commerce. – An assay. See Assay, n. – To exert one’s power or faculties upon; to make an effort to perform; to attempt; to endeavor; to make experiment or trial of; to try. – To test the value and purity of (metals); to assay. Whining	To utter a plaintive cry, as some animals; to moan with a childish noise; to complain, or to tell of sorrow, distress, or the like, in a plaintive, nasal tone; hence, to complain or to beg in a mean, unmanly way; to moan basely. – To utter or express plaintively, or in a mean, unmanly way; as, to whine out an excuse. – A plaintive tone; the nasal, childish tone of mean complaint; mean or affected complaint.
Wrinkle	A winkle. – A small ridge, prominence, or furrow formed by the shrinking or contraction of any smooth substance; a corrugation; a crease; a slight fold; as, wrinkle in the skin; a wrinkle in cloth. – hence, any roughness; unevenness. – A notion or fancy; a whim; as, to have a new wrinkle. – To contract into furrows and prominences; to make a wrinkle or wrinkles in; to corrugate; as, wrinkle the skin or the brow. – Hence, to make rough or uneven in any way. – To shrink into furrows and ridges.
Fortunate	Coming by good luck or favorable chance; bringing some good thing not foreseen as certain; presaging happiness; auspicious; as, a fortunate event; a fortunate concurrence of circumstances; a fortunate investment. – Receiving same unforeseen or unexpected good, or some good which was not dependent on one’s own skill or efforts; favored with good forune; lucky.

As you probably know the SAT, or Scholastic Aptitude Test, is very important subject for American students as it is widely used for admission to several colleges of the United States.
SAT tests were introduced by a non profit organization called The College Board back in 1926.
A SAT test is not only about words, in fact it is divided in four sections: Reading, Writing and two Math sections (one using calculator and one without calculator).
SAT words are very useful to perform great mainly in the reading but they are also useful for the writing section.

Enduring	Lasting; durable; long-suffering; as, an enduring disposition. – To remain firm, as under trial or suffering; to suffer patiently or without yielding; to bear up under adversity; to hold out. – To remain firm under; to sustain; to undergo; to support without breaking or yielding; as, metals endure a certain degree of heat without melting; to endure wind and weather. – To bear with patience; to suffer without opposition or without sinking under the pressure or affliction; to bear up under; to put up with; to tolerate. – To harden; to toughen; to make hardy.
Agitation	The act of agitating, or the state of being agitated; the state of being moved with violence, or with irregular action; commotion; as, the sea after a storm is in agitation. – A stirring up or arousing; disturbance of tranquillity; disturbance of mind which shows itself by physical excitement; perturbation; as, to cause any one agitation. – Excitement of public feeling by discussion, appeals, etc.; as, the antislavery agitation; labor agitation. – Examination or consideration of a subject in controversy, or of a plan proposed for adoption; earnest discussion; debate.

Parentheses	A word, phrase, or sentence, by way of comment or explanation, inserted in, or attached to, a sentence which would be grammatically complete without it. Aquatic	Pertaining to water; growing in water; living in, swimming in, or frequenting the margins of waters; as, aquatic plants and fowls. – An aquatic animal or plant. – Sports or exercises practiced in or on the water.
Exhale	To breathe out. Exterior	External; outward; pertaining to that which is external; — opposed to interior; as, the exterior part of a sphere. – External; on the outside; without the limits of; extrinsic; as, an object exterior to a man, opposed to what is within, or in his mind. – Relating to foreign nations; foreign; as, the exterior relations of a state or kingdom. – The outward surface or part of a thing; that which is external; outside. – Outward or external deportment, form, or ceremony; visible act; as, the exteriors of religion.
Pitied	Piety. – A feeling for the sufferings or distresses of another or others; sympathy with the grief or misery of another; compassion; fellow-feeling; commiseration. – A reason or cause of pity, grief, or regret; a thing to be regretted. – To feel pity or compassion for; to have sympathy with; to compassionate; to commiserate; to have tender feelings toward (any one), awakened by a knowledge of suffering. – To move to pity; — used impersonally. – To be compassionate; to show pity.
Feasible	Capable of being done, executed, or effected; practicable. – Fit to be used or tailed, as land.
Porpoise	Any small cetacean of the genus Phocaena, especially P. communis, or P. phocaena, of Europe, and the closely allied American species (P. Americana). The color is dusky or blackish above, paler beneath. They are closely allied to the dolphins, but have a shorter snout. Called also harbor porpoise, herring hag, puffing pig, and snuffer. – A true dolphin (Delphinus); — often so called by sailors.

Productivity	The quality or state of being productive; productiveness.
Chopstick	One of two small sticks of wood, ivory, etc., used by the Chinese and Japanese to convey food to the mouth.
Impose	To lay on; to set or place; to put; to deposit. – To lay as a charge, burden, tax, duty, obligation, command, penalty, etc.; to enjoin; to levy; to inflict; as, to impose a toll or tribute. – To lay on, as the hands, in the religious rites of confirmation and ordination. – To arrange in proper order on a table of stone or metal and lock up in a chase for printing; — said of columns or pages of type, forms, etc. – To practice trick or deception. – A command; injunction.

Informal	Not in the regular, usual, or established form; not according to official, conventional, prescribed, or customary forms or rules; irregular; hence, without ceremony; as, an informal writting, proceeding, or visit. – Deranged in mind; out of one’s senses.

While reading your favorite things, always keep a bloc notes with you and a pen or pencil…as you find a word you don’t know the meaning, or that it sounds strange to you to pronounce or spell….fire up your pen and write it down.

At the end of the day, talk with your parents and ask them the word’s meaning, you can also use software aid like the dictionary from Spelling Bee Ninja, but remember that if you ask an explanation to a person, it is way more likely you are going to remember that word, this is because in your brain you associate the words with something that really happened to you (your dad explaining the meaning), also a good way to remember is to make examples of sentences using facts and things that have a real life connection with your life, like for instance a field trip you did or something related to your family or your cat and so on.
