The Gutenberg Bible was the first major printed book! Before the printing press, books were handwritten by scribes (a process that could take years). A single book could cost as much as a house. Gutenberg's press could produce hundreds of copies quickly. The printing press is often called the most important invention of the second millennium. Gutenberg died in poverty, having lost a lawsuit over his invention. His press spread rapidly across Europe. By 1500, printing presses in over 200 cities had produced millions of books. The printing press is credited with democratizing knowledge and breaking the monopoly of the Church and wealthy elites on information. UNESCO declared the Gutenberg Bible a Memory of the World register item.

Thomas Edison is credited with the practical light bulb! His team developed a high-resistance bulb that lasted over 1,200 hours. He also invented the electrical distribution system, including the first power plant (Pearl Street Station, New York City, 1882). Edison was a prolific inventor with 1,093 U.S. patents. He invented the phonograph in 1877 (his first great invention). He also developed the motion picture camera (kinetoscope). He famously feuded with Nikola Tesla (former employee) over AC vs DC electricity. Edison was deaf in one ear due to a childhood illness. He married twice and had six children. His last patent was filed in 1931, the year he died. Henry Ford (friend) asked Edison's son to capture Edison's last breath in a test tube (the tube is preserved at the Henry Ford Museum).

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone! He was 29 when he invented it. Bell's mother and wife were both deaf, which influenced his work on sound and communication. The telephone patent (No. 174,465) was issued on March 7, 1876. Three days later, Bell successfully transmitted speech. Bell faced over 600 lawsuits over the patent, but none succeeded. He considered his most famous invention an intrusion on his work with the deaf. Bell also invented the metal detector (to try to find a bullet in President James Garfield after his assassination). He experimented with photophones (light-based communication) and hydrofoils. He refused to have a telephone in his study. Bell died in 1922; all telephones in North America were silenced for one minute in his honor. His name is remembered in Bell Labs (research institution).

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina was the site! The Wright Brothers made four flights that day; the longest was 59 seconds (Wilbur piloting). The Wright Flyer is now displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The brothers did not fly publicly until 1908. They faced skepticism from the press and scientific community. They patented their flight control system and spent years defending it in court. Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912; Orville lived until 1948 and saw the jet age. The Wright Brothers are considered the fathers of modern aviation. The centennial of their flight was celebrated in 2003 with reenactments. Their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, is preserved as a museum.

TCP/IP is Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol! Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn developed the protocol suite in the 1970s. TCP ensures data is delivered reliably, while IP handles addressing and routing. The World Wide Web (not the same as the Internet) was invented by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989. He created the first web browser and web server, and the first website (info.cern.ch) went live in 1991. The Internet has no single inventor; it is the result of decades of collaborative work. There are over 5 billion Internet users today (about 63% of the global population). The Internet is often called the greatest invention since the printing press.

The Ford Model T was the car! It was affordable – the price dropped from $850 in 1908 to $260 in 1925 (about $3,800 today). The Model T had a 20-horsepower engine, top speed of about 45 mph, and got 13-21 mpg. Ford's assembly line revolutionized manufacturing and was copied by industries worldwide. Ford was a controversial figure: he was anti-union (violent labor disputes), anti-Semitic (he published a newspaper spreading conspiracy theories), and opposed to US entry into WWII. Henry Ford's grandson, Henry Ford II, led the company after his death.

ENIAC was the first electronic computer! It was a secret military project during World War II. ENIAC's first public demonstration was in 1946. It cost about $500,000 (over $6 million today). The machine was programmed by plugging wires and setting switches; reprogramming could take days. The ENIAC programmers – Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Meltzer, Fran Bilas, and Ruth Lichterman – were not invited to the celebratory dinner after ENIAC's demonstration. Their contributions were largely forgotten until the 1990s, when they were inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame (1997). ENIAC was decommissioned in 1955. Some of its panels are preserved at the Smithsonian and the University of Pennsylvania. The development of the transistor (1947) and the integrated circuit (1958) led to miniaturization and modern computers.

James Watt improved the steam engine! He was a Scottish instrument maker. Watt coined the term "horsepower" to compare his engine's output to draft horses (1 horsepower = 550 foot-pounds per second). He also invented the term "horsepower" to market his engines. The partnership of Boulton & Watt (with Matthew Boulton) became one of the most successful engineering firms in history. The Watt steam engine was used in mines, factories, mills, and later locomotives and steamships. The steam engine is considered the key invention of the Industrial Revolution. Watt was a member of the Lunar Society (a group of scientists and inventors in Birmingham). He retired a wealthy man. The SI unit of power (watt) and the light bulb company (Watt) are named after him.

Marconi is known for the radio! He was an Italian inventor who moved to England to develop his work. He founded the Marconi Company (which still exists as a telecommunications company). The first radio broadcast for entertainment was in 1920 (KDKA in Pittsburgh). Marconi also developed shortwave radio, which enabled long-distance communication. He was a supporter of Italian fascism (he joined the Fascist Party in 1923 and praised Mussolini). He died in Rome in 1937. Fascist Italy held a state funeral. In 1943, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Tesla's radio patents (filed in 1897) predated Marconi's (filed in 1900), but the decision had little practical effect. The debate over who invented the radio continues. The Nobel Prize remains with Marconi.

The transistor was invented at Bell Labs! The first transistor was a point-contact transistor, made of germanium. It was the size of a paperclip. Today, transistors are microscopic; a modern computer chip can contain over 50 billion transistors. The inventors were awarded the Nobel Prize. Shockley later became a controversial figure (he advocated for eugenics and was accused of racism). Bardeen was a quiet, modest genius; he won two Nobel Prizes in Physics. The integrated circuit (Jack Kilby, Robert Noyce, 1958-1959) allowed many transistors to be placed on a single chip, leading to microprocessors. Gordon Moore (co-founder of Intel) predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would double every two years (Moore's Law), which held for decades. The transistor revolutionized electronics and enabled the digital age.

The election of Abraham Lincoln (November 1860) triggered secession! Lincoln was the first Republican president, and his party was founded on opposing the expansion of slavery into western territories. Southerners feared that if slavery could not expand, the slave states would eventually be outnumbered and slavery would be abolished. South Carolina seceded on December 20, 1860, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The war would last four years and claim over 600,000 American lives – more than any other war in U.S. history.

The Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in Confederate-held territory! It took effect on January 1, 1863. The proclamation did not free enslaved people in border states (like Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware) or in Union-controlled areas of the South. However, it fundamentally changed the nature of the war: the Union was now fighting to end slavery as well as to preserve the Union. It also allowed Black men to serve in the Union Army – over 180,000 Black soldiers fought for the Union by the war's end. Lincoln later worked to pass the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery nationwide), which was ratified after his death, in December 1865.

Jefferson Davis was the Confederate president! He was a West Point graduate and hero of the Mexican-American War. Despite his military experience, he often clashed with his generals, especially Joseph E. Johnston. Davis struggled to manage the Confederacy's war effort with limited resources. The Confederate capital was Richmond, Virginia (moved from Montgomery, Alabama). The Confederacy was never recognized as a nation by any foreign government, though Britain and France considered it for economic reasons (cotton). After his capture, Davis was held at Fort Monroe, Virginia, for two years. He never faced trial – the federal government dropped the treason charges in 1869.

Ulysses S. Grant was the Union commander! Grant was known for his aggressive tactics and willingness to fight – critics called him a "butcher" for the high casualties his army suffered, but Lincoln supported him, saying "I cannot spare this man; he fights." Grant's Vicksburg campaign (May-July 1863) gave the Union control of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in two. The fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, combined with the Union victory at Gettysburg the day before, marked the turning point of the war. Grant later became the 18th president, serving two terms. His face appears on the $50 bill.

The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point! Fought in southern Pennsylvania, the three-day battle was the largest ever fought in North America, with about 160,000 soldiers and 51,000 casualties. On the third day, Lee ordered Pickett's Charge – a massive infantry assault across open fields against the center of the Union line – which failed with devastating losses. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia never fully recovered. The day after Gettysburg, Vicksburg surrendered to Grant, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River. Lee surrendered to Grant nearly two years later, on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House. Grant offered generous terms: Confederate soldiers could return home with their horses and mules.

The 13th Amendment abolished slavery! Congress passed it on January 31, 1865, and it was ratified by the states on December 6, 1865. The amendment reads: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Over 4 million enslaved people were freed. The 14th Amendment (1868) granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, including formerly enslaved people. The 15th Amendment (1870) granted Black men the right to vote. These Reconstruction amendments were intended to secure equal rights, but enforcement was weak in the South.

Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address! The main speaker that day was Edward Everett, a famous orator, who spoke for two hours. Lincoln's two-minute speech was initially overlooked but later recognized as a masterpiece. The speech begins with "Four score and seven years ago" (87 years, referring to 1776) and ends with the famous call to ensure that "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Five known manuscript copies of the address survive. The speech is inscribed on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and remains a touchstone of American ideals.

The March to the Sea was Sherman's campaign from Atlanta to Savannah! Sherman famously cut his supply lines and ordered his army to live off the land. They destroyed railroads by heating the rails and wrapping them around trees (called "Sherman's neckties"), burned cotton gins and warehouses, and confiscated food and livestock. Sherman presented the city of Savannah to President Lincoln as a Christmas gift in December 1864. He then marched north through the Carolinas. General Winfield Scott proposed the Anaconda Plan! Scott was a hero of the Mexican-American War. His plan called for three parts: (1) blockade Southern ports to cut off trade, (2) take control of the Mississippi River to split the Confederacy, and (3) capture Richmond, the Confederate capital. Critics mocked the plan as too slow, calling it the "Anaconda Plan" after the snake that suffocates its prey. But by 1864, the plan was working – Confederate ports were effectively closed, the Mississippi was under Union control (after Vicksburg), and Richmond fell in April 1865. The Monitor and Virginia battle demonstrated that wooden warships were obsolete – both ships survived the battle, and navies around the world shifted to ironclad construction.

Reconstruction was the post-Civil War period! It lasted from 1865 to 1877. President Andrew Johnson's lenient policies allowed Southern states to pass Black Codes, leading Congress (controlled by Radical Republicans) to take control of Reconstruction. The Freedmen's Bureau (1865-1872) provided food, housing, medical aid, schools, and legal assistance to freed slaves and poor whites. Samsara is the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Hindus believe that the soul (atman) is immortal and is reborn into a new body after death. The quality of each rebirth depends on karma – the sum of a person's actions in previous lives. Good karma leads to higher rebirth (human or divine), while bad karma leads to lower rebirth (animal or hell realm). The ultimate goal is moksha – liberation from samsara, where the soul unites with Brahman (ultimate reality). This cycle continues until the soul achieves spiritual perfection. Hinduism has over 1.2 billion followers, mostly in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, making it the third-largest religion in the world.

The Torah is the most sacred text of Judaism! It is also called the Pentateuch (Greek for "five books"). Jews believe the Torah was given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. The Resurrection is the central event of Christianity! According to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, died, was buried, and rose from the dead on the third day (Easter Sunday). Christians believe this event proves Jesus's divinity and conquers death, offering eternal life to believers. The New Testament contains the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), the Acts of the Apostles (early church history), letters (epistles) from Paul and other apostles, and the Book of Revelation (apocalyptic prophecy). The Confucian Analects (Lunyu) records the teachings of Confucius. Confucianism profoundly influenced China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam for over 2,000 years. The civil service examination system (starting in the Han Dynasty, 206 BCE-220 CE) was based on Confucian classics, selecting government officials by merit rather than birth. Diwali is the Festival of Lights! Celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists, Diwali typically falls in October or November. People light oil lamps (diyas), set off fireworks, exchange gifts, and decorate their homes with colorful rangoli patterns. The festival celebrates different legends depending on the region – most commonly the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. The primary difference is over leadership succession after Muhammad's death! Sunnis believe Abu Bakr (Muhammad's father-in-law) was the rightful first caliph. Shias believe Ali (Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law) was the rightful successor, and that leadership should pass through Ali's descendants (the Imams). Shias celebrate Ashura, mourning the death of Imam Husayn (Ali's son) at the Battle of Karbala (680 CE). Both branches share core beliefs – the Quran, the Five Pillars, belief in one God – but differ on religious authority, some practices, and jurisprudence. Relations between the branches have varied over history, from cooperation to conflict.

Christianity is the largest religion, with about 2.4 billion followers! The three largest Christian denominations are Roman Catholic (1.3 billion), Protestant (900 million – including Anglicans, Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Evangelicals), and Eastern Orthodox (220 million). Islam is the fastest-growing major religion, primarily due to higher birth rates in Muslim-majority countries. The global distribution of religions is shifting: Africa and Asia have the fastest-growing Christian and Muslim populations, while Europe and North America are becoming more secular. Fleming's discovery was serendipitous! He had left a Petri dish uncovered, and mold spores landed on it. When he returned from vacation, he noticed the mold had killed the bacteria. He famously said, "One sometimes finds what one is not looking for." Penicillin was first used to treat a human infection in 1941. By 1944, it was being mass-produced for Allied soldiers. Fleming warned about antibiotic resistance: "The microbes are educated to resist penicillin." Today, antibiotic resistance is a major global health crisis. Fleming was a modest man; he was knighted in 1944. He died of a heart attack in 1955. The discovery of penicillin has been called the greatest medical breakthrough of the 20th century. Columbus called the native people "Indians"! He thought Cuba was part of China and that the Caribbean islands were near Japan. He called the Taíno people "Indios" (Spanish for Indians). The name stuck for centuries. Columbus's voyages launched the Columbian Exchange: tomatoes, potatoes, maize, beans, squash, chili peppers, and tobacco traveled from the Americas to Europe; wheat, rice, horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and smallpox traveled from Europe to the Americas. Smallpox devastated native populations (up to 90% mortality). Columbus was not the first European to reach the Americas (Leif Erikson did around 1000 CE), but his voyages had lasting global impact.

Howard Carter discovered the tomb! He famously replied to Lord Carnarvon: "Yes, wonderful things!" when asked if he could see anything. The tomb was largely undisturbed because it had been buried under debris from later tomb construction. Tutankhamun became king at age 9 and died at age 19 (c. 1323 BCE). His tomb contained a solid gold coffin weighing 110 kg (240 lbs). The discovery was a global media sensation. The "curse" was invented to sell newspapers; statistically, expedition members lived normal lifespans. Carter spent ten years cataloging the artifacts. He died in 1939. The Rosetta Stone unlocked hieroglyphs! Before its discovery, Egyptian hieroglyphs were indecipherable. The stone dates from 196 BCE (Ptolemaic period). It records a decree issued by priests honoring Pharaoh Ptolemy V. The British seized the stone from the French after defeating them in Egypt (1801). The stone has been in the British Museum since 1802. Egypt has requested its return; the museum has refused. Champollion, a French linguist, cracked the code using the names of Ptolemy and Cleopatra. The Dead Sea Scrolls are ancient Jewish manuscripts! They were first discovered by Bedouin shepherds. Over 900 scrolls were found in 11 caves. The scrolls include every book of the Hebrew Bible except Esther. They also include rules for religious communities (like the Essenes, who likely wrote the scrolls). The scrolls were written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. They were hidden to protect them from the Romans during the First Jewish Revolt (66-70 CE). The scrolls are stored at the Shrine of the Book in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. The scrolls have been digitized and are available online. They are considered the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century.

Röntgen discovered X-rays! The discovery revolutionized medicine. Doctors could now see inside the body without surgery. X-rays were quickly adopted for diagnosing broken bones, finding swallowed objects, and treating cancer (radiation therapy). Röntgen also discovered the medical use of X-rays. He was a conscientious scientist who declined financial gain from his discovery. He donated his Nobel Prize money to the University of Würzburg. X-rays are a type of ionizing radiation; excessive exposure can cause cancer (leading to safety precautions). Röntgen's discovery also led to the discovery of radioactivity (Henri Becquerel) and radiation therapy. Röntgen died in 1923. The unit of radiation exposure (röntgen) is named after him.

Rutherford discovered the atomic nucleus! The gold foil experiment showed that atoms are mostly empty space. The nucleus is tiny (about 1/10,000 the diameter of the atom) but contains most of the atom's mass. Rutherford was a New Zealand-born physicist. He also discovered alpha and beta radiation and coined the terms. He is often called the "father of nuclear physics." His students included Niels Bohr (atomic model) and James Chadwick (discovered the neutron). Rutherford was a mentor to many future Nobel laureates. Pangaea was the supercontinent! Wegener published "The Origin of Continents and Oceans" (1915). He was a meteorologist, not a geologist, which made geologists skeptical. Harry Hess (seafloor spreading) and others provided the mechanism in the 1960s. Plate tectonics explains earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain formation (Himalayas, Andes). The continents continue to drift today – about 1-2 inches per year. The next supercontinent (Pangaea Ultima) is predicted to form in about 250 million years. Wegener's work is now celebrated as a major scientific breakthrough. The theory of plate tectonics is one of the most important discoveries in Earth sciences.

Jenner developed the smallpox vaccine! The word "vaccination" comes from "vacca" (cow). Jenner's work built on the observation that cowpox provided immunity to smallpox. He was a country doctor in Gloucestershire, England. He faced criticism from the medical establishment. Smallpox killed an estimated 300-500 million people in the 20th century alone. The WHO launched an eradication campaign in 1967. The last naturally occurring case was in Somalia in 1977. Eradication was declared in 1980. Smallpox vaccines are no longer routinely given. Samples remain in two labs (CDC in Atlanta, VECTOR in Russia). Jenner is buried in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. A statue of him stands in Trafalgar Square (London) and in Kensington Gardens. The Jenner Institute at Oxford University (developers of a COVID-19 vaccine) is named in his honor.

God, gold, and glory were the main motivations! "God" meant the desire to spread Christianity to non-Christian peoples. The Portuguese explorer Prince Henry the Navigator sponsored voyages partly to find Christian allies against Muslims. "Gold" meant the desire for wealth – spices (pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg), gold, silver, and silk. "Glory" meant national pride, personal fame, and the Renaissance spirit of discovery and achievement. European nations competed fiercely to claim new lands and build empires. This period transformed world history, connecting the Eastern and Western Hemispheres for the first time.

Prince Henry was called "the Navigator"! He sponsored over 50 voyages of exploration down the African coast.
