Enduring	Lasting; durable; long-suffering; as, an enduring disposition. – To remain firm, as under trial or suffering; to suffer patiently or without yielding; to bear up under adversity; to hold out. – To remain firm under; to sustain; to undergo; to support without breaking or yielding; as, metals endure a certain degree of heat without melting; to endure wind and weather. – To bear with patience; to suffer without opposition or without sinking under the pressure or affliction; to bear up under; to put up with; to tolerate. – To harden; to toughen; to make hardy.
Agitation	The act of agitating, or the state of being agitated; the state of being moved with violence, or with irregular action; commotion; as, the sea after a storm is in agitation. – A stirring up or arousing; disturbance of tranquillity; disturbance of mind which shows itself by physical excitement; perturbation; as, to cause any one agitation. – Excitement of public feeling by discussion, appeals, etc.; as, the antislavery agitation; labor agitation. – Examination or consideration of a subject in controversy, or of a plan proposed for adoption; earnest discussion; debate.
Enlisted	To enter on a list; to enroll; to register. – To engage for military or naval service, the name being entered on a list or register; as, to enlist men. – To secure the support and aid of; to employ in advancing interest; as, to enlist persons in the cause of truth, or in a charitable enterprise. – To enroll and bind one’s self for military or naval service; as, he enlisted in the regular army; the men enlisted for the war. – To enter heartily into a cause, as if enrolled.
Excess	The state of surpassing or going beyond limits; the being of a measure beyond sufficiency, necessity, or duty; that which exceeds what is usual or prover; immoderateness; superfluity; superabundance; extravagance; as, an excess of provisions or of light. – An undue indulgence of the appetite; transgression of proper moderation in natural gratifications; intemperance; dissipation. – The degree or amount by which one thing or number exceeds another; remainder; as, the difference between two numbers is the excess of one over the other.
Parentheses	A word, phrase, or sentence, by way of comment or explanation, inserted in, or attached to, a sentence which would be grammatically complete without it. It is usually inclosed within curved lines (see def. 2 below), or dashes. – One of the curved lines () which inclose a parenthetic word or phrase.
Aquatic	Pertaining to water; growing in water; living in, swimming in, or frequenting the margins of waters; as, aquatic plants and fowls. – An aquatic animal or plant. – Sports or exercises practiced in or on the water.
Exhale	To breathe out. Hence: To emit, as vapor; to send out, as an odor; to evaporate; as, the earth exhales vapor; marshes exhale noxious effluvia. – To draw out; to cause to be emitted in vapor; as, the sum exhales the moisture of the earth. – To rise or be given off, as vapor; to pass off, or vanish.
Article	A distinct portion of an instrument, discourse, literary work, or any other writing, consisting of two or more particulars, or treating of various topics; as, an article in the Constitution. Hence: A clause in a contract, system of regulations, treaty, or the like; a term, condition, or stipulation in a contract; a concise statement; as, articles of agreement. – A literary composition, forming an independent portion of a magazine, newspaper, or cyclopedia. – Subject; matter; concern; distinct. – A distinct part. – A particular one of various things; as, an article of merchandise; salt is a necessary article. – Precise point of time; moment. – One of the three words, a, an, the, used before nouns to limit or define their application. A (or an) is called the indefinite article, the the definite article. – One of the segments of an articulated appendage. – To formulate in articles; to set forth in distinct particulars. – To accuse or charge by an exhibition of articles. – To bind by articles of covenant or stipulation; as, to article an apprentice to a mechanic. – To agree by articles; to stipulate; to bargain; to covenant.
Exterior	External; outward; pertaining to that which is external; — opposed to interior; as, the exterior part of a sphere. – External; on the outside; without the limits of; extrinsic; as, an object exterior to a man, opposed to what is within, or in his mind. – Relating to foreign nations; foreign; as, the exterior relations of a state or kingdom. – The outward surface or part of a thing; that which is external; outside. – Outward or external deportment, form, or ceremony; visible act; as, the exteriors of religion.
Pitied	Piety. – A feeling for the sufferings or distresses of another or others; sympathy with the grief or misery of another; compassion; fellow-feeling; commiseration. – A reason or cause of pity, grief, or regret; a thing to be regretted. – To feel pity or compassion for; to have sympathy with; to compassionate; to commiserate; to have tender feelings toward (any one), awakened by a knowledge of suffering. – To move to pity; — used impersonally. – To be compassionate; to show pity.
Feasible	Capable of being done, executed, or effected; practicable. – Fit to be used or tailed, as land.
Porpoise	Any small cetacean of the genus Phocaena, especially P. communis, or P. phocaena, of Europe, and the closely allied American species (P. Americana). The color is dusky or blackish above, paler beneath. They are closely allied to the dolphins, but have a shorter snout. Called also harbor porpoise, herring hag, puffing pig, and snuffer. – A true dolphin (Delphinus); — often so called by sailors.
Fellowship	The state or relation of being or associate. – Companionship of persons on equal and friendly terms; frequent and familiar intercourse. – A state of being together; companionship; partnership; association; hence, confederation; joint interest. – Those associated with one, as in a family, or a society; a company. – A foundation for the maintenance, on certain conditions, of a scholar called a fellow, who usually resides at the university. – The rule for dividing profit and loss among partners; — called also partnership, company, and distributive proportion. – To acknowledge as of good standing, or in communion according to standards of faith and practice; to admit to Christian fellowship.
Fertilize	To make fertile or enrich; to supply with nourishment for plants; to make fruitful or productive; as, to fertilize land, soil, ground, and meadows. – To fecundate; as, to fertilize flower.
Bough	An arm or branch of a tree, esp. a large arm or main branch. – A gallows.
Formerly	In time past, either in time immediately preceding or at any indefinite distance; of old; heretofore.
Preserved	To keep or save from injury or destruction; to guard or defend from evil, harm, danger, etc.; to protect. – To save from decay by the use of some preservative substance, as sugar, salt, etc.; to season and prepare for remaining in a good state, as fruits, meat, etc.; as, to preserve peaches or grapes. – To maintain throughout; to keep intact; as, to preserve appearances; to preserve silence. – To make preserves. – To protect game for purposes of sport. – That which is preserved; fruit, etc., seasoned and kept by suitable preparation; esp., fruit cooked with sugar; — commonly in the plural. – A place in which game, fish, etc., are preserved for purposes of sport, or for food.
Fraction	The act of breaking, or state of being broken, especially by violence. – A portion; a fragment. – One or more aliquot parts of a unit or whole number; an expression for a definite portion of a unit or magnitude. – To separate by means of, or to subject to, fractional distillation or crystallization; to fractionate; — frequently used with out; as, to fraction out a certain grade of oil from pretroleum.
Productivity	The quality or state of being productive; productiveness.
Chopstick	One of two small sticks of wood, ivory, etc., used by the Chinese and Japanese to convey food to the mouth.
Impose	To lay on; to set or place; to put; to deposit. – To lay as a charge, burden, tax, duty, obligation, command, penalty, etc.; to enjoin; to levy; to inflict; as, to impose a toll or tribute. – To lay on, as the hands, in the religious rites of confirmation and ordination. – To arrange in proper order on a table of stone or metal and lock up in a chase for printing; — said of columns or pages of type, forms, etc. – To practice trick or deception. – A command; injunction.
Recommendation	The act of recommending. – That which recommends, or commends to favor; anything procuring, or tending to procure, a favorable reception, or to secure acceptance and adoption; as, he brought excellent recommendations. – The state of being recommended; esteem.
Informal	Not in the regular, usual, or established form; not according to official, conventional, prescribed, or customary forms or rules; irregular; hence, without ceremony; as, an informal writting, proceeding, or visit. – Deranged in mind; out of one’s senses.
Coincidence	The condition of occupying the same place in space; as, the coincidence of circles, surfaces, etc. – The condition or fact of happening at the same time; as, the coincidence of the deaths of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. – Exact correspondence in nature, character, result, circumstances, etc.; concurrence; agreement.
Interfering	To come in collision; to be in opposition; to clash; as, interfering claims, or commands. – To enter into, or take a part in, the concerns of others; to intermeddle; to interpose. – To strike one foot against the opposite foot or ankle in using the legs; — sometimes said of a human being, but usually of a horse; as, the horse interferes. – To act reciprocally, so as to augment, diminish, or otherwise affect one another; — said of waves, rays of light, heat, etc. See Interference, 2. – To cover the same ground; to claim the same invention.
Invincible	Incapable of being conquered, overcome, or subdued; unconquerable; insuperable; as, an invincible army, or obstacle.
Remiss	Not energetic or exact in duty or business; not careful or prompt in fulfilling engagements; negligent; careless; tardy; behindhand; lagging; slack; hence, lacking earnestness or activity; languid; slow. – The act of being remiss; inefficiency; failure.
Resemble	To be like or similar to; to bear the similitude of, either in appearance or qualities; as, these brothers resemble each other. – To liken; to compare; to represent as like. – To counterfeit; to imitate. – To cause to imitate or be like.
Levied	A name formerly given in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia to the Spanish real of one eighth of a dollar (or 12/ cents), valued at eleven pence when the dollar was rated at 7s. 6d. – The act of levying or collecting by authority; as, the levy of troops, taxes, etc. – That which is levied, as an army, force, tribute, etc. – The taking or seizure of property on executions to satisfy judgments, or on warrants for the collection of taxes; a collecting by execution. – To raise, as a siege. – To raise; to collect; said of troops, to form into an army by enrollment, conscription, etc. – To raise or collect by assessment; to exact by authority; as, to levy taxes, toll, tribute, or contributions. – To gather or exact; as, to levy money. – To erect, build, or set up; to make or construct; to raise or cast up; as, to levy a mill, dike, ditch, a nuisance, etc. – To take or seize on execution; to collect by execution. – To seize property, real or personal, or subject it to the operation of an execution; to make a levy; as, to levy on property; the usual mode of levying, in England, is by seizing the goods.
Resolution	The act, operation, or process of resolving. Specifically: (a) The act of separating a compound into its elements or component parts. (b) The act of analyzing a complex notion, or solving a vexed question or difficult problem. – The state of being relaxed; relaxation. – The state of being resolved, settled, or determined; firmness; steadiness; constancy; determination. – That which is resolved or determined; a settled purpose; determination. Specifically: A formal expression of the opinion or will of an official body or a public assembly, adopted by vote; as, a legislative resolution; the resolutions of a public meeting. – The state of being resolved or firm in opinion or thought; conviction; assurance. – The act or process of solving; solution; as, the resolution of an equation or problem. – A breaking up, disappearance; or termination, as of a fever, a tumor, or the like. – The passing of a dissonant into a consonant chord by the rising or falling of the note which makes the discord.
Lotion	A washing, especially of the skin for the purpose of rendering it fair. – A liquid preparation for bathing the skin, or an injured or diseased part, either for a medicinal purpose, or for improving its appearance.
Deciding	To cut off; to separate. – To bring to a termination, as a question, controversy, struggle, by giving the victory to one side or party; to render judgment concerning; to determine; to settle. – To determine; to form a definite opinion; to come to a conclusion; to give decision; as, the court decided in favor of the defendant.
Married	To unite in wedlock or matrimony; to perform the ceremony of joining, as a man and a woman, for life; to constitute (a man and a woman) husband and wife according to the laws or customs of the place. – To join according to law, (a man) to a woman as his wife, or (a woman) to a man as her husband. See the Note to def. 4. – To dispose of in wedlock; to give away as wife. – To take for husband or wife. See the Note below. – Figuratively, to unite in the closest and most endearing relation. – To enter into the conjugal or connubial state; to take a husband or a wife. – Indeed ! in truth ! — a term of asseveration said to have been derived from the practice of swearing by the Virgin Mary.
Rotting	To undergo a process common to organic substances by which they lose the cohesion of their parts and pass through certain chemical changes, giving off usually in some stages of the process more or less offensive odors; to become decomposed by a natural process; to putrefy; to decay. – Figuratively: To perish slowly; to decay; to die; to become corrupt. – To make putrid; to cause to be wholly or partially decomposed by natural processes; as, to rot vegetable fiber. – To expose, as flax, to a process of maceration, etc., for the purpose of separating the fiber; to ret. – Process of rotting; decay; putrefaction. – A disease or decay in fruits, leaves, or wood, supposed to be caused by minute fungi. See Bitter rot, Black rot, etc., below. – A fatal distemper which attacks sheep and sometimes other animals. It is due to the presence of a parasitic worm in the liver or gall bladder. Marshal	Originally, an officer who had the care of horses; a groom. – An officer of high rank, charged with the arrangement of ceremonies, the conduct of operations, or the like – One who goes before a prince to declare his coming and provide entertainment; a harbinger; a pursuivant. – One who regulates rank and order at a feast or any other assembly, directs the order of procession, and the like. – The chief officer of arms, whose duty it was, in ancient times, to regulate combats in the lists. – The highest military officer. – A ministerial officer, appointed for each judicial district of the United States, to execute the process of the courts of the United States, and perform various duties, similar to those of a sheriff. The name is also sometimes applied to certain police officers of a city. – To dispose in order; to arrange in a suitable manner; as, to marshal troops or an army. – To direct, guide, or lead. – To dispose in due order, as the different quarterings on an escutcheon, or the different crests when several belong to an achievement.
Scholar	One who attends a school; one who learns of a teacher; one under the tuition of a preceptor; a pupil; a disciple; a learner; a student. – One engaged in the pursuits of learning; a learned person; one versed in any branch, or in many branches, of knowledge; a person of high literary or scientific attainments; a savant. – A man of books. – In English universities, an undergraduate who belongs to the foundation of a college, and receives support in part from its revenues.
Descendant	Descendent. – One who descends, as offspring, however remotely; — correlative to ancestor or ascendant.
Measles	Leprosy; also, a leper. – A contagious febrile disorder commencing with catarrhal symptoms, and marked by the appearance on the third day of an eruption of distinct red circular spots, which coalesce in a crescentic form, are slightly raised above the surface, and after the fourth day of the eruption gradually decline; rubeola. – A disease of cattle and swine in which the flesh is filled with the embryos of different varieties of the tapeworm. – A disease of trees. – The larvae of any tapeworm (Taenia) in the cysticerus stage, when contained in meat. Mechanic	The art of the application of the laws of motion or force to construction. – A mechanician; an artisan; an artificer; one who practices any mechanic art; one skilled or employed in shaping and uniting materials, as wood, metal, etc., into any kind of structure, machine, or other object, requiring the use of tools, or instruments. – Having to do with the application of the laws of motion in the art of constructing or making things; of or pertaining to mechanics; mechanical; as, the mechanic arts. – Of or pertaining to a mechanic or artificer, or to the class of artisans; hence, rude; common; vulgar. – Base.
Monarch	A sole or supreme ruler; a sovereign; the highest ruler; an emperor, king, queen, prince, or chief. – One superior to all others of the same kind; as, an oak is called the monarch of the forest. – A patron deity or presiding genius. – A very large red and black butterfly (Danais Plexippus); — called also milkweed butterfly. – Superior to others; preeminent; supreme; ruling.
Musician	One skilled in the art or science of music; esp., a skilled singer, or performer on a musical instrument.
Dominoes	A kind of hood worn by the canons of a cathedral church; a sort of amice. – A mourning veil formerly worn by women. – A kind of mask; particularly, a half mask worn at masquerades, to conceal the upper part of the face. Dominos were formerly worn by ladies in traveling. – A costume worn as a disguise at masquerades, consisting of a robe with a hood adjustable at pleasure. – A person wearing a domino. – A game played by two or more persons, with twenty-eight pieces of wood, bone, or ivory, of a flat, oblong shape, plain at the back, but on the face divided by a line in the middle, and either left blank or variously dotted after the manner of dice. The game is played by matching the spots or the blank of an unmatched half of a domino already played – One of the pieces with which the game of dominoes is played.
Neighborhood	The quality or condition of being a neighbor; the state of being or dwelling near; proximity. – A place near; vicinity; adjoining district; a region the inhabitants of which may be counted as neighbors; as, he lives in my neighborhood. – The inhabitants who live in the vicinity of each other; as, the fire alarmed all the neiborhood. – The disposition becoming a neighbor; neighborly kindness or good will.
Dynamite	An explosive substance consisting of nitroglycerin absorbed by some inert, porous solid, as infusorial earth, sawdust, etc. It is safer than nitroglycerin, being less liable to explosion from moderate shocks, or from spontaneous decomposition.
Toughening	To grow or make tough, or tougher.
Orchard	A garden. – An inclosure containing fruit trees; also, the fruit trees, collectively; — used especially of apples, peaches, pears, cherries, plums, or the like, less frequently of nutbearing trees and of sugar maple trees.
Emptiness	The state of being empty; absence of contents; void space; vacuum; as, the emptiness of a vessel; emptiness of the stomach. – Want of solidity or substance; unsatisfactoriness; inability to satisfy desire; vacuity; hollowness; the emptiness of earthly glory. – Want of knowledge; lack of sense; vacuity of mind.

Switch to the next level only when you feel to do it, don’t rush, be constant and everything will come naturally.

Read a lot

Remember that reading is a great way to
1) Open your mind and improve your critical thinking capabilities.
2) Learn new words and improve your spelling skills.

So keep on reading everything you can (books but also magazines, comics, instruction manuals), if possible read more using paper because it is much less relaxing for your eyes than a computer monitor, also when reading on paper you are much more focused on what you are reading (no hyper links there to distract you), improving your concentration skills.

Talk with your parents and teacher about the subjects you like the most: detective stories, adventures, funny stories and so on and together with them identify new books to borrow from the school library or, if you really like one, buy it at the bookstore.

While reading your favorite things, always keep a bloc notes with you and a pen or pencil…as you find a word you don’t know the meaning, or that it sounds strange to you to pronounce or spell….fire up your pen and write it down.

At the end of the day, talk with your parents and ask them the word’s meaning, you can also use software aid like the dictionary from Spelling Bee Ninja, but remember that if you ask an explanation to a person, it is way more likely you are going to remember that word, this is because in your brain you associate the words with something that really happened to you (your dad explaining the meaning), also a good way to remember is to make examples of sentences using facts and things that have a real life connection with your life, like for instance a field trip you did or something related to your family or your cat and so on.
That way it will be way easier to memorize a lot of concepts without using your CPU power too much, and it’s fun too.

Prop	A shell, used as a die. Barefoot	With the feet bare; without shoes or stockings.
Batch	The quantity of bread baked at one time. – A quantity of anything produced at one operation; a group or collection of persons or things of the same kind; as, a batch of letters; the next batch of business.
Grip	The griffin. – A small ditch or furrow. – To trench; to drain. – An energetic or tenacious grasp; a holding fast; strength in grasping. – A peculiar mode of clasping the hand, by which members of a secret association recognize or greet, one another; as, a masonic grip. – That by which anything is grasped; a handle or gripe; as, the grip of a sword. – A device for grasping or holding fast to something. – To give a grip to; to grasp; to gripe.
Harvest	The gathering of a crop of any kind; the ingathering of the crops; also, the season of gathering grain and fruits, late summer or early autumn. – That which is reaped or ready to be reaped or gath//ed; a crop, as of grain (wheat, maize, etc.), or fruit. – The product or result of any exertion or labor; gain; reward. – To reap or gather, as any crop.
Howled	To utter a loud, protraced, mournful sound or cry, as dogs and wolves often do. – To utter a sound expressive of distress; to cry aloud and mournfully; to lament; to wail. – To make a noise resembling the cry of a wild beast. – To utter with outcry. – The protracted, mournful cry of a dog or a wolf, or other like sound. – A prolonged cry of distress or anguish; a wail.

Limp	To halt; to walk lamely. Also used figuratively. – A halt; the act of limping. – A scraper for removing poor ore or refuse from the sieve. – Flaccid; flabby, as flesh. – Lacking stiffness; flimsy; as, a limp cravat.
Tulip	Any plant of the liliaceous genus Tulipa. Many varieties are cultivated for their beautiful, often variegated flowers.

Eyelid	The cover of the eye; that portion of movable skin with which an animal covers or uncovers the eyeball at pleasure.
Fireplace	The part a chimney appropriated to the fire; a hearth; — usually an open recess in a wall, in which a fire may be built.
Padlock	A portable lock with a bow which is usually jointed or pivoted at one end so that it can be opened, the other end being fastened by the bolt, — used for fastening by passing the bow through a staple over a hasp or through the links of a chain, etc. – Fig.: A curb; a restraint. – To fasten with, or as with, a padlock; to stop; to shut; to confine as by a padlock.

Acacias	A roll or bag, filled with dust, borne by Byzantine emperors, as a memento of mortality. It is represented on medals. – A genus of leguminous trees and shrubs. Nearly 300 species are Australian or Polynesian, and have terete or vertically compressed leaf stalks, instead of the bipinnate leaves of the much fewer species of America, Africa, etc. Very few are found in temperate climates. – The inspissated juice of several species of acacia; — called also gum acacia, and gum arabic.
Expunging	To blot out, as with pen; to rub out; to efface designedly; to obliterate; to strike out wholly; as, to expunge words, lines, or sentences. – To strike out; to wipe out or destroy; to annihilate; as, to expugne an offense.
Ovation	A lesser kind of triumph allowed to a commander for an easy, bloodless victory, or a victory over slaves. – Hence: An expression of popular homage; the tribute of the multitude to a public favorite.
Pang	A paroxysm of extreme pain or anguish; a sudden and transitory agony; a throe; as, the pangs of death. – To torture; to cause to have great pain or suffering; to torment.
Flagrant	Flaming; inflamed; glowing; burning; ardent. – Actually in preparation, execution, or performance; carried on hotly; raging. – Flaming into notice; notorious; enormous; heinous; glaringly wicked.
Passable	Capable of being passed, traveled, navigated, traversed, penetrated, or the like; as, the roads are not passable; the stream is passablein boats. – Capable of being freely circulated or disseminated; acceptable; generally receivable; current. – Such as may be allowed to pass without serious objection; tolerable; admissable; moderate; mediocre.
Paucity	Fewness; smallness of number; scarcity. – Smallnes of quantity; exiguity; insufficiency; as, paucity of blood.
Annexation	The act of annexing; process of attaching, adding, or appending; the act of connecting; union; as, the annexation of Texas to the United States, or of chattels to the freehold. – The union of property with a freehold so as to become a fixture. Bouvier. (b) (Scots Law) The appropriation of lands or rents to the crown.
Forfeiture	The act of forfeiting; the loss of some right, privilege, estate, honor, office, or effects, by an offense, crime, breach of condition, or other act. – That which is forfeited; a penalty; a fine or mulct.
Perpetuate	To make perpetual; to cause to endure, or to be continued, indefinitely; to preserve from extinction or oblivion; to eternize. – Made perpetual; perpetuated.
Frivolous	Of little weight or importance; not worth notice; slight; as, a frivolous argument. – Given to trifling; marked with unbecoming levity; silly; interested especially in trifling matters.
Pessimistic	Of or pertaining to pessimism; characterized by pessimism; gloomy; foreboding.
Piccolo	A small, shrill flute, the pitch of which is an octave higher than the ordinary flute; an octave flute. – A small upright piano. – An organ stop, with a high, piercing tone.
Generosity	Noble birth. – The quality of being noble; noble-mindedness. – Liberality in giving; munificence.
Asphalt	Alt. of Asphaltum – To cover with asphalt; as, to asphalt a roof; asphalted streets.
Germinate	To sprout; to bud; to shoot; to begin to vegetate, as a plant or its seed; to begin to develop, as a germ. – To cause to sprout.
Auspices	A divining or taking of omens by observing birds; an omen as to an undertaking, drawn from birds; an augury; an omen or sign in general; an indication as to the future. – Protection; patronage and care; guidance.
Gnarled	Knotty; full of knots or gnarls; twisted; crossgrained. – a knot in wood; a large or hard knot, or a protuberance with twisted grain, on a tree.
Auspicious	Having omens or tokens of a favorable issue; giving promise of success, prosperity, or happiness; predicting good; as, an auspicious beginning. – Prosperous; fortunate; as, auspicious years. – Favoring; favorable; propitious; — applied to persons or things.
Avalanche	A large mass or body of snow and ice sliding swiftly down a mountain side, or falling down a precipice. – A fall of earth, rocks, etc., similar to that of an avalanche of snow or ice. – A sudden, great, or irresistible descent or influx of anything.
Harness	Originally, the complete dress, especially in a military sense, of a man or a horse; hence, in general, armor. – The equipment of a draught or carriage horse, for drawing a wagon, coach, chaise, etc.; gear; tackling. – The part of a loom comprising the heddles, with their means of support and motion, by which the threads of the warp are alternately raised and depressed for the passage of the shuttle. – To dress in armor; to equip with armor for war, as a horseman; to array. – Fig.: To equip or furnish for defense. – To make ready for draught; to equip with harness, as a horse. Also used figuratively.
Putrefaction	The act or the process of putrefying; the offensive decay of albuminous or other matter. – The condition of being putrefied; also, that which putrefied.
Aviator	An experimenter in aviation. – A flying machine.
Haughty	High; lofty; bold. – Disdainfully or contemptuously proud; arrogant; overbearing. – Indicating haughtiness; as, a haughty carriage.
Regretting	Pain of mind on account of something done or experienced in the past, with a wish that it had been different; a looking back with dissatisfaction or with longing; grief; sorrow; especially, a mourning on account of the loss of some joy, advantage, or satisfaction. – Dislike; aversion. – To experience regret on account of; to lose or miss with a sense of regret; to feel sorrow or dissatisfaction on account of (the happening or the loss of something); as, to regret an error; to regret lost opportunities or friends.
Headquarters	The quarters or place of residence of any chief officer, as the general in command of an army, or the head of a police force; the place from which orders or instructions are issued; hence, the center of authority or order.
Relevant	Relieving; lending aid or support. – Bearing upon, or properly applying to, the case in hand; pertinent; applicable. – Sufficient to support the cause.
Impractical	Not practical.
Religious	Of or pertaining to religion; concerned with religion; teaching, or setting forth, religion; set apart to religion; as, a religious society; a religious sect; a religious place; religious subjects, books, teachers, houses, wars. – Possessing, or conforming to, religion; pious; godly; as, a religious man, life, behavior, etc. – Scrupulously faithful or exact; strict. – Belonging to a religious order; bound by vows. – A person bound by monastic vows, or sequestered from secular concern, and devoted to a life of piety and religion; a monk or friar; a nun.
Belligerent	Waging war; carrying on war. – Pertaining, or tending, to war; of or relating to belligerents; as, a belligerent tone; belligerent rights. – A nation or state recognized as carrying on war; a person engaged in warfare.
Inexplicable	Not explicable; not explainable; incapable of being explained, interpreted, or accounted for; as, an inexplicable mystery.
Retrial	A secdond trial, experiment, or test; a second judicial trial, as of an accused person.
Bickering	A skirmishing. – Altercation; wrangling. – To contend in petulant altercation; to wrangle. – To move quickly and unsteadily, or with a pattering noise; to quiver; to be tremulous, like flame. – A skirmish; an encounter. – A fight with stones between two parties of boys. – A wrangle; also, a noise,, as in angry contention.
Insoluble	Not soluble; in capable or difficult of being dissolved, as by a liquid; as, chalk is insoluble in water. – Not to be solved or explained; insolvable; as, an insoluble doubt, question, or difficulty. – Strong.
Schooner	Originally, a small, sharp-built vessel, with two masts and fore-and-aft rig. Sometimes it carried square topsails on one or both masts and was called a topsail schooner. About 1840, longer vessels with three masts, fore-and-aft rigged, came into use, and since that time vessels with four masts and even with six masts, so rigged, are built. Schooners with more than two masts are designated three-masted schooners, four-masted schooners, etc. See Illustration in Appendix. – A large goblet or drinking glass, — used for lager beer or ale.
Centripetal	Tending, or causing, to approach the center. – Expanding first at the base of the inflorescence, and proceeding in order towards the summit. – Having the radicle turned toward the axis of the fruit, as some embryos. – Progressing by changes from the exterior of a thing toward its center; as, the centripetal calcification of a bone.
Commuter	One who commutes; especially, one who commutes in traveling.
Introduction	The act of introducing, or bringing to notice. – The act of formally making persons known to each other; a presentation or making known of one person to another by name; as, the introduction of one stranger to another. – That part of a book or discourse which introduces or leads the way to the main subject, or part; preliminary; matter; preface; proem; exordium. – A formal and elaborate preliminary treatise; specifically, a treatise introductory to other treatises, or to a course of study; a guide; as, an introduction to English literature.
Shuddering	To tremble or shake with fear, horror, or aversion; to shiver with cold; to quake. – The act of shuddering, as with fear.
Connubial	Of or pertaining to marriage, or the marriage state; conjugal; nuptial.
Speculation	The act of speculating. – Examination by the eye; view. – Mental view of anything in its various aspects and relations; contemplation; intellectual examination. – The act or process of reasoning a priori from premises given or assumed. – The act or practice of buying land, goods, shares, etc., in expectation of selling at a higher price, or of selling with the expectation of repurchasing at a lower price; a trading on anticipated fluctuations in price, as distinguished from trading in which the profit expected is the difference between the retail and wholesale prices, or the difference of price in different markets. – Any business venture in involving unusual risks, with a chance for large profits. – A conclusion to which the mind comes by speculating; mere theory; view; notion; conjecture. – Power of sight. – A game at cards in which the players buy from one another trumps or whole hands, upon a chance of getting the highest trump dealt, which entitles the holder to the pool of stakes.
Crucial	Having the form of a cross; appertaining to a cross; cruciform; intersecting; as, crucial ligaments; a crucial incision. – Severe; trying or searching, as if bringing to the cross; decisive; as, a crucial test.
Knickknack	A trifle or toy; a bawble; a gewgaw.
Speculative	Given to speculation; contemplative. – Involving, or formed by, speculation; ideal; theoretical; not established by demonstration. – Of or pertaining to vision; also, prying; inquisitive; curious. – Of or pertaining to speculation in land, goods, shares, etc.; as, a speculative dealer or enterprise.
Lacquer	A varnish, consisting of a solution of shell-lac in alcohol, often colored with gamboge, saffron, or the like; — used for varnishing metals, papier-mache, and wood. The name is also given to varnishes made of other ingredients, esp. the tough, solid varnish of the Japanese, with which ornamental objects are made. – To cover with lacquer.
Spiritual	Consisting of spirit; not material; incorporeal; as, a spiritual substance or being. – Of or pertaining to the intellectual and higher endowments of the mind; mental; intellectual. – Of or pertaining to the moral feelings or states of the soul, as distinguished from the external actions; reaching and affecting the spirits. – Of or pertaining to the soul or its affections as influenced by the Spirit; controlled and inspired by the divine Spirit; proceeding from the Holy Spirit; pure; holy; divine; heavenly-minded; — opposed to carnal. – Not lay or temporal; relating to sacred things; ecclesiastical; as, the spiritual functions of the clergy; lords spiritual and temporal; a spiritual corporation. – A spiritual function, office, or affair. Locality	The state, or condition, of belonging to a definite place, or of being contained within definite limits. – Position; situation; a place; a spot; esp., a geographical place or situation, as of a mineral or plant. – Limitation to a county, district, or place; as, locality of trial. – The perceptive faculty concerned with the ability to remember the relative positions of places.
Stenciled	A thin plate of metal, leather, or other material, used in painting, marking, etc. The pattern is cut out of the plate, which is then laid flat on the surface to be marked, and the color brushed over it. Called also stencil plate. – To mark, paint, or color in figures with stencils; to form or print by means of a stencil.
Deceitful	Full of, or characterized by, deceit; serving to mislead or insnare; trickish; fraudulent; cheating; insincere.
Manipulator	One who manipulates.
Strenuous	Eagerly pressing or urgent; zealous; ardent; earnest; bold; valiant; intrepid; as, a strenuous advocate for national rights; a strenuous reformer; a strenuous defender of his country.
Medicinal	Having curative or palliative properties; used for the cure or alleviation of bodily disorders; as, medicinal tinctures, plants, or springs. – Of or pertaining to medicine; medical.
Stupefying	To make stupid; to make dull; to blunt the faculty of perception or understanding in; to deprive of sensibility; to make torpid. – To deprive of material mobility.
Disingenuous	Not noble; unbecoming true honor or dignity; mean; unworthy; as, disingenuous conduct or schemes. – Not ingenuous; wanting in noble candor or frankness; not frank or open; uncandid; unworthily or meanly artful.

Substitute	One who, or that which, is substituted or put in the place of another; one who acts for another; that which stands in lieu of something else – a person who enlists for military service in the place of a conscript or drafted man. – To put in the place of another person or thing; to exchange.
Disoblige	To do an act which contravenes the will or desires of; to offend by an act of unkindness or incivility; to displease; to refrain from obliging; to be unaccommodating to. – To release from obligation.

Obedient	Subject in will or act to authority; willing to obey; submissive to restraint, control, or command.
Sympathized	To have a common feeling, as of bodily pleasure or pain. – To feel in consequence of what another feels; to be affected by feelings similar to those of another, in consequence of knowing the person to be thus affected. – To agree; to be in accord; to harmonize. – To experience together. – To ansew to; to correspond to.
Dragnet	A net to be drawn along the bottom of a body of water, as in fishing.
Oblivion	The act of forgetting, or the state of being forgotten; cessation of remembrance; forgetfulness. – Official ignoring of offenses; amnesty, or general pardon; as, an act of oblivion.
Upheave	To heave or lift up from beneath; to raise.
Embargo	An edict or order of the government prohibiting the departure of ships of commerce from some or all of the ports within its dominions; a prohibition to sail. – To lay an embargo on and thus detain; to prohibit from leaving port; — said of ships, also of commerce and goods.
Veterinarian	One skilled in the diseases of cattle or domestic animals; a veterinary surgeon.
Equilibrium	Equality of weight or force; an equipoise or a state of rest produced by the mutual counteraction of two or more forces. – A level position; a just poise or balance in respect to an object, so that it remains firm; equipoise; as, to preserve the equilibrium of the body. – A balancing of the mind between motives or reasons, with consequent indecision and doubt.
Oologist	One versed in oology.
Excruciating	Torturing; racking. – To inflict agonizing pain upon; to torture; to torment greatly; to rack; as, to excruciate the heart or the body.

This first grade spelling word list is composed of words that are frequently used in spelling bees organized for first graders.

Clam	A bivalve mollusk of many kinds, especially those that are edible; as, the long clam (Mya arenaria), the quahog or round clam (Venus mercenaria), the sea clam or hen clam (Spisula solidissima), and other species of the United States. The name is said to have been given originally to the Tridacna gigas, a huge East Indian bivalve. – Strong pinchers or forceps. – A kind of vise, usually of wood. – To clog, as with glutinous or viscous matter. – To be moist or glutinous; to stick; to adhere. – Claminess; moisture. – A crash or clangor made by ringing all the bells of a chime at once. – To produce, in bell ringing, a clam or clangor; to cause to clang.
Dig	To turn up, or delve in, (earth) with a spade or a hoe; to open, loosen, or break up (the soil) with a spade, or other sharp instrument; to pierce, open, or loosen, as if with a spade. – To get by digging; as, to dig potatoes, or gold. – To hollow out, as a well; to form, as a ditch, by removing earth; to excavate; as, to dig a ditch or a well. – To thrust; to poke. – To work with a spade or other like implement; to do servile work; to delve. – To take ore from its bed, in distinction from making excavations in search of ore. – To work like a digger; to study ploddingly and laboriously. – A thrust; a punch; a poke; as, a dig in the side or the ribs. Fort	A strong or fortified place; usually, a small fortified place, occupied only by troops, surrounded with a ditch, rampart, and parapet, or with palisades, stockades, or other means of defense; a fortification.
Grin	A snare; a gin. – To show the teeth, as a dog; to snarl. – To set the teeth together and open the lips, or to open the mouth and withdraw the lips from the teeth, so as to show them, as in laughter, scorn, or pain. – To express by grinning. – The act of closing the teeth and showing them, or of withdrawing the lips and showing the teeth; a hard, forced, or sneering smile.

Pond	A body of water, naturally or artificially confined, and usually of less extent than a lake. – To make into a pond; to collect, as water, in a pond by damming. – To ponder.
Punch	A beverage composed of wine or distilled liquor, water (or milk), sugar, and the juice of lemon, with spice or mint; — specifically named from the kind of spirit used; as rum punch, claret punch, champagne punch, etc. – The buffoon or harlequin of a puppet show. – A short, fat fellow; anything short and thick. – One of a breed of large, heavy draught horses; as, the Suffolk punch. – To thrust against; to poke; as, to punch one with the end of a stick or the elbow. – A thrust or blow. – A tool, usually of steel, variously shaped at one end for different uses, and either solid, for stamping or for perforating holes in metallic plates and other substances, or hollow and sharpedged, for cutting out blanks, as for buttons, steel pens, jewelry, and the like; a die. – An extension piece applied to the top of a pile; a dolly. – A prop, as for the roof of a mine. – To perforate or stamp with an instrument by pressure, or a blow; as, to punch a hole; to punch ticket.
Sip	To drink or imbibe in small quantities; especially, to take in with the lips in small quantities, as a liquid; as, to sip tea. – To draw into the mouth; to suck up; as, a bee sips nectar from the flowers. – To taste the liquor of; to drink out of. – To drink a small quantity; to take a fluid with the lips; to take a sip or sips of something. – The act of sipping; the taking of a liquid with the lips. – A small draught taken with the lips; a slight taste. – See Seep.
Soak	To cause or suffer to lie in a fluid till the substance has imbibed what it can contain; to macerate in water or other liquid; to steep, as for the purpose of softening or freshening; as, to soak cloth; to soak bread; to soak salt meat, salt fish, or the like. – To drench; to wet thoroughly. – To draw in by the pores, or through small passages; as, a sponge soaks up water; the skin soaks in moisture. – To make (its way) by entering pores or interstices; — often with through. – Fig.: To absorb; to drain. – To lie steeping in water or other liquid; to become sturated; as, let the cloth lie and soak. – To enter (into something) by pores or interstices; as, water soaks into the earth or other porous matter. – To drink intemperately or gluttonously.

Manner	Mode of action; way of performing or effecting anything; method; style; form; fashion. – Characteristic mode of acting, conducting, carrying one’s self, or the like; bearing; habitual style. – Customary method of acting; habit. – Carriage; behavior; deportment; also, becoming behavior; well-bred carriage and address. – The style of writing or thought of an author; characteristic peculiarity of an artist. – Certain degree or measure; as, it is in a manner done already. – Sort; kind; style; — in this application sometimes having the sense of a plural, sorts or kinds.
Bloodhound	A breed of large and powerful dogs, with long, smooth, and pendulous ears, and remarkable for acuteness of smell. It is employed to recover game or prey which has escaped wounded from a hunter, and for tracking criminals. Formerly it was used for pursuing runaway slaves. Other varieties of dog are often used for the same purpose and go by the same name. The Cuban bloodhound is said to be a variety of the mastiff.

Sudden	Happening without previous notice or with very brief notice; coming unexpectedly, or without the common preparation; immediate; instant; speedy. – Hastly prepared or employed; quick; rapid. – Hasty; violent; rash; precipitate. – Suddenly; unexpectedly. – An unexpected occurrence; a surprise.

Conflict	A striking or dashing together; violent collision; as, a conflict of elements or waves. – A strife for the mastery; hostile contest; battle; struggle; fighting. – To strike or dash together; to meet in violent collision; to collide. – To maintain a conflict; to contend; to engage in strife or opposition; to struggle. – To be in opposition; to be contradictory.
Oxen	The male of bovine quadrupeds, especially the domestic animal when castrated and grown to its full size, or nearly so. The word is also applied, as a general name, to any species of bovine animals, male and female.

Raccoon	A North American nocturnal carnivore (Procyon lotor) allied to the bears, but much smaller, and having a long, full tail, banded with black and gray. Its body is gray, varied with black and white. Called also coon, and mapach.
Recite	To repeat, as something already prepared, written down, committed to memory, or the like; to deliver from a written or printed document, or from recollection; to rehearse; as, to recite the words of an author, or of a deed or covenant. – To tell over; to go over in particulars; to relate; to narrate; as, to recite past events; to recite the particulars of a voyage. – To rehearse, as a lesson to an instructor. – To state in or as a recital. Reindeer	Any ruminant of the genus Rangifer, of the Deer family, found in the colder parts of both the Eastern and Western hemispheres, and having long irregularly branched antlers, with the brow tines palmate.

Introduction

In this second grade spelling bee word list, we will explore the words that are frequently used in spelling bee competitions for second graders.
The 2nd grade spelling bee words list is a bit more challenging than its predecessor, the first grade word list for spelling bees. Here, the words are a bit longer in some cases, and contain slightly trickier spellings.
You will also see that the second grade word list contains spellings that are not pronounced the way they seem, and that is something that will come as a challenge to many second grade students.
But while the aspect itself is challenging, studying this list thoroughly will help you ease through any spelling bee competition.

Blunt	Having a thick edge or point, as an instrument; dull; not sharp. – Dull in understanding; slow of discernment; stupid; — opposed to acute. – Abrupt in address; plain; unceremonious; wanting the forms of civility; rough in manners or speech. – Hard to impress or penetrate. – To dull the edge or point of, by making it thicker; to make blunt. – To repress or weaken, as any appetite, desire, or power of the mind; to impair the force, keenness, or susceptibility, of; as, to blunt the feelings. – A fencer’s foil. – A short needle with a strong point.
