Whether you’re whispering secrets, sharing gossip (don’t do it too often!), or just repeating what someone told you, this grammar topic is essential—and not as scary as it sounds.

So buckle up, ESL legends! Let’s turn you into expert message messengers.

🎯 What Is Direct Speech?

Direct Speech is when you repeat someone’s exact words, usually inside quotation marks.

For example:

Sarah said, “I love pizza.”

You’re quoting her word-for-word. It’s like pressing play on her voice and writing down what she said exactly as she said it.

You’ll know you’re dealing with Direct Speech when:

  • There are quotation marks (“ ”)
  • The sentence uses a reporting verb like say or ask
  • The tense stays the same as the original

🧠 Pro tip:

The punctuation (commas, question marks) stays inside the quotes. Example:

He said, “I’m going to the gym.”

📦 What Is Indirect Speech (Reported Speech)?

Indirect Speech is when you tell someone what another person said—but not using their exact words. You report the message without quotes and usually change the tense.

For example:

Sarah said that she loved pizza.

You see what happened? We’re not quoting Sarah directly. We changed the tense (from “love” to “loved”) and dropped the quotation marks. That’s reported speech in action!

🧪 Why Change the Tense?

When you switch from Direct to Indirect Speech, the verb tense often shifts back in time. This is called backshifting.

Here’s a cheat sheet:

Direct Speech Reported Speech
“I am happy.” He said he was happy.
“She likes cats.” She said she liked cats.
“We will go.” They said they would go.
“I can swim.” I said I could swim.

But wait! 😲 Not all sentences require a tense change. If someone told you something just now or if the statement is still true, you might keep the tense.

Example:

“The sun is hot.” → He said the sun is hot. (Yep, still hot. ☀)

🔄 Changing Pronouns, Too!

When you report speech, you also have to be a little detective and figure out the right pronouns.

Original:

Mark said, “I am hungry.”

Reported:

Mark said he was hungry.

If someone else said it about you, the pronouns change:

Original:

You said, “I am hungry.”

Reported:

You said you were hungry.

See? You need to be a grammar ninja 🥷 and adjust those little words carefully.

❓ Reporting Questions

Questions don’t like to be bossed around—but in reported speech, they get a little makeover.

  1. Yes/No Questions

“Do you like coffee?” → He asked if I liked coffee.
“Are they here?” → She asked whether they were there.

Notice: No more question marks! 😎

  1. Wh- Questions

“Where do you live?” → He asked where I lived.
“What time is it?” → She asked what time it was.

We keep the question word (what, where, when), but the sentence becomes a statement.

💬 Reporting Commands and Requests

If someone tells you to do something, and you’re reporting that… guess what? You need “to” + verb.

Commands:

“Close the window!” → He told me to close the window.
“Don’t be late!” → She told me not to be late.

Requests:

“Please help me.” → He asked me to help him.
“Can you pass the salt?” → She asked me to pass the salt.

Easy peasy!

As young students and learners are becoming more and more interested to take part in such spelling activities, the organizers and spelling bee enthusiasts are doing everything in their power to ensure that these young souls are provided with the proper platform and guide to pursue their goals.

With these thoughts in mind, spelling bees have been established around the world. Today, we will be seeing 8 such popular spelling bees from all across the globe.

1. Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling bee is the most popular spelling bee event in the whole world.
Inaugurated back in 1925, this US based spelling bee hosts participants from all over the world, with majority of these participants being from the United States.
The competition is held annually during the month of May. Participants must not be older than 14 years and they must not have passed the 8th grade.
This spelling bee is probably the most competitive one out there.
This is probably one of the reasons why 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee ended up having 8 WINNERS, INSTEAD OF 1 (because they ran out of words)!
The Scripps National Spelling bee also endorses a few other spelling bees around the world.
It also accepts participants from other regional spelling bee competitions held in the United States.

2. Indian Spelling Bee

The Indian Spelling Bee is one of the most popular spelling bees in the Sub-continent and the biggest spelling bee event in India. The competition is open for school kids (Grade 1 to 9).
Since India is such a vast country, the spelling bee takes place in two stages.
In the first stage, the competition is held regionally as each school is put under one of four regions (north, south, east, and west). Placeholders from these regional rounds then battle it out in the national round held in Kolkata, India. The national level spelling bee is held during the month of August.

3. Spelling Bee of Canada

Established back in the year 1987, the Spelling Bee of Canada (SBOC) has been involved in the promotion of children and youth literacy aiming to enhance the learning experience of these youngsters.
The Spelling Bee of Canada organizes annual spelling bees for kids between the ages of 6 and 14. Registered participants are then placed into one of three categories: Primary (6 to 8 years), Junior (9 to 11 years) or, Intermediate (12 to 14 years).
Students over the ages of 14 go on to become mentors to the participants of their respective regions.

4. The Japan Spelling Bee

The Japan Spelling Bee was established almost a decade ago in 2010. Formerly known as ‘Japan Times Bee’, this spelling bee is held annually across Japan.
The Japan Spelling Bee is the only spelling contest that is officially endorsed and recognized by the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States.
Registered schools hold a spelling bee within their own schools and send the champions to take part in the Japan Spelling Bee.
The winner of the Japan Spelling Bee is then sent to the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals held in Washington.
Registration deadline ends in December, with a general fee of $240.
Home schooled students are also allowed to take part in the competition. All spelling bee resources for the Japan Spelling Bee can be obtained from the Scripps National Spelling Bee website.

5. African Spelling Bee

The African Spelling Bee was established in the year 2010 by ten different spelling bee organizations from across the continent of Africa.
Ever since then, this spelling bee has been acting as a platform that brings the brightest spellers from the entire continent of Africa under one roof.
The 2019 African Spelling Bee, held in Uganda, saw the participation of 108 regional champions from 18 different African countries.
The African Spelling Bee has taken the initiative of ensuring a higher literacy rate among young learners. The spelling bee’s website claims that the competition has reached out to over 10 million learners across Africa and has impacted their lives in a very positive way.

6. Mexican MEXTESOL Spelling Bee

MEXTESOL stands for the Mexican Association of Teachers of English, A. C. which is an academic association that aims to develop the English language (both in terms of speaking and writing) among its members as well as non-members.
The association also works for the development of teaching and research methods that involves English linguistics.
In order to expand their vision, MEXTESOL organizes the MEXTESOL Spelling Bee for students of both primary (fifth and sixth grade) as well as for secondary school students.
Each contest is limited to 50 students. These spelling bee contests are limited to schools where English is not that often used as a language or in academics. This is done to focus their efforts into the development of those school children who are deprived of proper inclusion of the English language in their curriculum.

7. South Asian Spelling Bee

South Asian spelling bee

The South Asian Spelling Bee is an annual spelling bee organized in the United States that is open for all children coming from a South Asian descent. The contest tours the United States every June and July seeking the top spellers from a total of five cities.
The SASB competition is open to students who are 14 or younger, and who has at least one parent or grandparent from a South Asian origin, or whose lineage can be traced back to any of the South Asian countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and so on.
The event is accepting up to a hundred applications on a first come first serve basis. 20 students will be shortlisted from the original 100 applicants based on certain criteria. Finally, 12 students will be allowed to take part in the finals.
Initial applications are now live for a fee of $125.

8. European PTA

The European Parent Teacher Association organizes this spelling bee for all DoDEA schools in Europe.
This spelling bee is also held in association with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, United States.
Students take part in this spelling bee and position holders go on to participate in the European rounds, and then winners from there go straight to Washington to join the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Registration fee is the same as that of Scripps, i.e. $240 for general registration.

9. UNC Adult Spelling Bee

The University of North Carolina undertook the program for organizing spelling bees for adults.
That is how the UNC Adult Spelling Bee came to be!
The door to this spelling bee is open for all adults for a ticket price of just $6.
Although the spelling bee is for adults, the participants are eased into the competition just like in normal spelling bees. They start out with easy words and gradually progress to harder ones.
UNC Adult Spelling Bee allows both single participation as well as participation in teams.

10. Australian Spelling Bee

The Australian Spelling Bee is a national spelling competition held in Australia for students. The competition typically involves students from various age groups showcasing their spelling abilities by correctly spelling a wide range of words. It serves as a platform for young spellers to enhance their language skills, build confidence, and compete on a national level.

Participants usually progress through regional and state-level competitions to reach the national finals. The Australian Spelling Bee aims to promote literacy, vocabulary, and the love of language among school children.

How to Make Halloween Fun Again

While being spooky and scary is the norm when it comes to October 31st, it sure doesn’t always be that way. What started as a three-day celebration to commemorate the dead turned into synonymous with eerie stuff.  This shift in meaning and understanding may take some of the essence away. But eventually, it’s all about the day to celebrate everyone in life and death.

Here are several ideas on how you can make Halloween words less spooky. Even better, you also can encourage others to take part in the activities.

Eerie Meenie Tiny Story

To many people, Halloween takes root from the old Celtic festivals, especially Samhain. This is also the root of several stories that you can find only on Halloween. Or even better, they only happen during Halloween.

The stories about witches, shapeshifters, and other spiritual beings are always interesting to watch. And so you can have more fun with Halloween words when you can tell a scary story in 200 words or less.

You can explore numerous mediums such as poetry, short stories, four-panel comics, and other storytelling mediums. Then you will see that you don’t have to use blatantly spooky words such as ghouls to monsters to be scary.

Fear stems from a dark corner inside one’s mind. Therefore, your imagination plays a huge part in determining how scary one thing is. Remember, using fancy Halloween words doesn’t always make it scary.

For the younger students, this storytelling task can be very challenging with their limited vocabulary. Therefore, you need to set the prompts and guide them to use the right words. They will see that even plain and regular words can sound scary too.

Words to Tickle Your Pun-ny Bones

So many costumes take inspiration from puns that you often hear. It’s all about how you can interpret the Halloween words in the most creative ways possible. Anyhow, here are some of the puns that you can use for your next costume. Let’s see if you can see the original lines and laughs along.

  • Welcome to the Pun-kin patch!
  • Let’s have a gourd time!
  • Keep calm and pumpkin on!
  • Witchful thinking
  • Wicked awesome

Finding puns may not be easy, but they are surely fun. Keep encouraging the students to think of more puns to write and see who gets the best and funniest puns of all.

Scary Sweet Tooth

During Halloween, candies and chocolates are some of the most favorite items to have. You can get them for free from your trick-or-treat walk. Several restaurants and café even have special items that they only sell during Halloween.

Rather than competing on who gets the most candies, you can set up a competition on who gets a specific candy. This is perfect for a class activity where the students have to randomly take one candy from the bag and have to deceive others using words.

Taking inspiration from the popular Impostor game, you can divide the students into several smaller groups and have one of them act as the impostor. They need to describe the candy, but wrongly, to mislead the other players. When an impostor wins the round, they can keep the candy. Naturally, the roles are set randomly to give everyone an equal chance to trick others.

Halloween Words Game

Come Halloween means a perfect time to introduce some scary-sounding words. One of the best games to have is Hangman, which also fits with the Halloween theme. You can have a set of words and have the students guess the word in five or fewer guesses.

For older students, the word can be longer and also more complex. They also can have the Halloween-themed scrabble. Instead of using the actual Scrabble board, you can use the whiteboard and have one of numerous scary Halloween words in the center. And the students are doing it individually and must compile as many words as possible. The student with the most scary-sounding words wins the Halloween Scrabble. Of course, these words have to be real and not puns.

Onomatopeia in Halloween

For some strange reason, people hardly talk about onomatopoeia during Halloween. While at the same time, it’s hard to ignore these words you hear and feel. Sometimes, these words are the best way to showcase the spooks.

For example, rather than saying that you are afraid of vampires. You can say vampires make your heart go ba-dum ba-dum. With onomatopeia, you can see and feel these words rather than speak them out loud.

Give it some time and you will see so many examples of onomatopeia around you. To the students using less common words such as “meow,” “woof,” “howl,” and even “roar” can be very exciting. They will learn that there are a million ways to show and explain what is scary and why is it scary.

The words that also describe the sounds can bring out the fear as it will excite their imaginations. For the younger students, it can be in the form of a role play, where you ask them for the word and repeat it several times. While the older students can be more challenging as they have to write more or find onomatopeia in daily life.

Now you see, Halloween words don’t have to be spooky. They also can be enjoyable. Rather, most of those words are far from being scary. Yes, there are ghosts, skeletons, and witches here and there. But you also can find candies, tricks, superheroes, and even chocolate along the way.
