Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero, regardless of direction. The absolute value of -7 is 7, because -7 is 7 units away from zero on the number line. We write this as |-7| = 7. Absolute value is always positive or zero—it represents only the size of the number, not its sign. For example, |5| = 5 and |-5| = 5. Absolute value is very useful in real-world situations where only the size or distance matters, not the direction.

Starting at -2 on the number line and moving right 5 units: -2 → -1 (1 unit), 0 (2 units), 1 (3 units), 2 (4 units), 3 (5 units). So you end at 3. This means -2 + 5 = 3. Moving right represents adding a positive number. Moving left represents adding a negative number. This visual method helps make integer addition intuitive before you learn the rules.

Starting at 3 on the number line and moving left 7 units: 3 → 2 (1 unit), 1 (2 units), 0 (3 units), -1 (4 units), -2 (5 units), -3 (6 units), -4 (7 units). So you end at -4. This means 3 - 7 = -4. Moving left represents subtracting a positive number. If you subtract a negative number, you move right (because subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive).
