However, Hooke observed dead cells (cork cells are the cell walls of dead plant cells). Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch scientist, was the first to observe living cells (bacteria, protozoa, red blood cells) in the 1670s. The cell theory was developed later by Matthias Schleiden (plants are made of cells, 1838), Theodor Schwann (animals are made of cells, 1839), and Rudolf Virchow (cells come from pre-existing cells, 1855). Cells are incredibly diverse – there are over 200 different types of cells in the human body alone. The smallest cells (bacteria) are about 0.2 micrometers (0.0002 mm). The largest cell in the human body is the egg cell (ovum), which is about the size of a grain of sand (0.12 mm). The longest cells are nerve cells (neurons), which can be over 1 meter long.</p>
