Water covers most of Earth! About 71% of Earth's surface is water. That is why astronauts call Earth the "Blue Planet." The water is mostly in five big oceans: the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Southern Ocean. The land is divided into seven continents. Even though land seems big to us, most of Earth is actually water!

The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean! It covers about 63 million square miles – that is bigger than all the land on Earth put together! The Pacific Ocean is so big that you could fit all the continents inside it. It got its name from the word "peaceful" because early explorer Ferdinand Magellan thought it looked calm. The deepest part of any ocean is in the Pacific – the Mariana Trench is almost 7 miles deep!

Asia is the largest continent! It covers about 17.2 million square miles – that is almost one-third of all the land on Earth. Asia is home to China, India, Japan, Russia (part of it), and many other countries. The highest mountain in the world (Mount Everest) is in Asia. The most populated cities in the world are in Asia. Asia is so big that it touches three oceans: the Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans.

A lake is a body of water surrounded by land! Most lakes are fresh water, but some lakes (like the Great Salt Lake in Utah) are salty. Lakes are different from rivers because the water does not flow in one direction. The largest lake in the world is the Caspian Sea – even though it is called a "sea," it is actually a lake because it is surrounded by land. It is salty, but it is still a lake. Canada has more lakes than any other country – over 2 million lakes!

The Nile River is the longest river in the world! It flows north through 11 countries in Africa before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Amazon River is the second longest, but it carries more water than the Nile. Rivers have been very important to people throughout history – many ancient cities were built along rivers because they provided water and a way to travel. The longest river in North America is the Missouri River.

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world! It is in the Himalayan mountain range, on the border between Nepal and China (Tibet). People called climbers try to reach the top, but it is very dangerous because of the cold, wind, and low oxygen. The first people to reach the top were Sir Edmund Hillary (from New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (from Nepal) in 1953. There are mountains on other planets too – the tallest mountain in our solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars, which is almost three times taller than Mount Everest!

An island is land surrounded by water! The largest island in the world is Greenland. Islands can be found in oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers. Some islands are connected to other islands in groups called archipelagos – like Hawaii, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Indonesia is a country made of over 17,000 islands! Some islands are uninhabited (no people live there), and some have big cities like Manhattan Island in New York City.

The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world! It covers about 3.6 million square miles across North Africa. The Sahara has sand dunes, rocky plateaus, and even mountains. Temperatures can be over 120°F (49°C) during the day and below freezing at night. Despite the harsh conditions, people (like the Berber and Tuareg people) and animals (like fennec foxes and addax antelopes) live in the Sahara. The largest desert overall is Antarctica (a cold desert) – it gets almost no rain or snow, just ice.

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world! It covers about 40% of South America, mostly in Brazil. The Amazon has more kinds of plants and animals than anywhere else on Earth. One out of every ten species on Earth lives in the Amazon Rainforest! It is called "the lungs of the Earth" because it produces about 20% of the world's oxygen. The second largest rainforest is the Congo Rainforest in Africa.

The answer is ocean! Oceans are the largest bodies of water on Earth. They cover 71% of Earth's surface and contain 97% of Earth's water. The other 3% is fresh water in lakes, rivers, and glaciers. A map is a drawing that shows where places are! Maps are like a picture of the Earth from above. They show us where roads go, where rivers flow, where mountains are tall, and where cities are located. Without maps, it would be very hard to find new places. People have been making maps for thousands of years – the oldest known map is over 14,000 years old, drawn on a cave wall!

If you are facing North, South is behind you! The opposite of North is South. The opposite of East is West. Knowing directions helps you read maps and give directions. For example, "Go North on Main Street" means go toward the top of the map. You can use a compass to find which way is North – a compass needle always points North!

If North is at the top, then South is at the bottom of the map. East is on the right side, and West is on the left side. The compass rose is usually found in a corner of the map. Some compass roses look like a star with points for each direction. When you see a compass rose, you can figure out which way any place is from another place. "The school is North of the park" means the school is above the park on the map.

A map key (also called a legend) explains what the symbols on the map mean! For example, the key might show that a blue wavy line means "river," a black line means "road," a green area means "forest," and a star means "capital city." Without the key, you would not know what any of the symbols mean. Always look at the map key first when you read a new map. Some common map symbols: a tent means campground, a fork and knife mean restaurant, and a bed means hotel.

The map scale tells you how distances on the map compare to real distances! If a map has a scale of 1 inch = 10 miles, then every inch you measure on the map equals 10 miles in the real world. If a road is 3 inches long on the map, the real road is 30 miles long. Map scales help you figure out how far it is from one place to another. Different maps have different scales – a map of your town might use 1 inch = 1 mile, but a map of the whole world might use 1 inch = 500 miles!

You would use a physical map to find mountains and rivers! Physical maps show natural landforms and bodies of water. Political maps show borders, countries, states, and cities. Often, maps combine both types of information. For example, a world map might show countries in different colors (political) and also show mountain ranges and rivers (physical). When you look at a map, notice what kind of information it is showing you!

You should go West to get to the picnic area! West is the direction to the left on most maps (when North is at the top). East is right, North is up, and South is down. Understanding directions helps you read maps and find your way. If you know where you are and you know which direction your destination is, you can figure out how to get there!

A globe is more accurate because the Earth is round! A globe shows the true shape, size, and position of continents and oceans. However, globes are not easy to carry around or to show in a book. That is why we also use flat maps – they are easier to use even though they have some distortion. On a flat map, Greenland often looks as big as Africa – but in reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland! That is because flattening a sphere causes stretching near the poles.

The Equator is the main line of latitude! It goes around the middle of the Earth like a belt. The Equator divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere (half) and the Southern Hemisphere. Places near the Equator are usually hot because they get direct sunlight all year. Other important lines of latitude include the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.

Brazil is in South America! North America includes Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the countries of Central America and the Caribbean. South America is a different continent that connects to North America through the narrow strip of land called Central America. The longest river in North America is the Missouri River (2,341 miles), and the largest lake is Lake Superior (one of the Great Lakes).

The Amazon Rainforest is in South America! It is home to millions of species of plants, animals, and insects – many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Europe has many famous landmarks: the Colosseum in Rome (Italy), Big Ben in London (United Kingdom), the Acropolis in Athens (Greece), the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (Spain). Europe is also where many famous artists lived, like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Vincent van Gogh.

Kangaroos are native to Australia! They are marsupials – animals that carry their babies in a pouch. Other Australian animals include koalas (also marsupials), wombats, wallabies, tasmanian devils, and the platypus (a very strange animal that lays eggs and has a duck-like bill!). Australia is also famous for the Great Barrier Reef – the largest coral reef system in the world. New Zealand, part of Oceania, is known for its beautiful mountains and the culture of the Maori people.

Penguins live in Antarctica! The most famous is the Emperor penguin – it can survive temperatures as low as -60°F (-51°C). Penguins cannot fly, but they are excellent swimmers. Other animals that live in or near Antarctica include leopard seals, Weddell seals, orcas (killer whales), and many types of fish and birds. Antarctica has no polar bears – polar bears live in the Arctic (North Pole), not Antarctica (South Pole)!

Asia has the most people – over 4.7 billion! That is more than half of the world's population (the world has about 8 billion people). China (about 1.4 billion) and India (about 1.4 billion) are the two most populated countries on Earth, and both are in Asia. Antarctica has the fewest people (no permanent residents – only about 1,000-5,000 scientists at research stations depending on the season). The smallest continent by population is Australia/Oceania (about 45 million).

The Amazon Rainforest and the Andes Mountains are in South America! The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest on Earth. The Andes Mountains are the longest mountain range on Earth, stretching about 4,300 miles (7,000 km) along the western edge of South America. You have learned so much about the seven continents! Great job, geographer!

Rain is a type of weather! Weather includes rain, snow, sunshine, clouds, wind, fog, thunderstorms, and hail. Weather happens in the lowest part of our atmosphere, called the troposphere. Weather affects what clothes you wear, what activities you can do, and how you feel. A weather scientist is called a meteorologist – they study weather and make forecasts!

You should wear sunscreen on sunny days! The sun gives off ultraviolet (UV) rays that can hurt your skin and cause sunburn. Sunscreen blocks these rays. You should also wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still reach your skin, so many doctors recommend wearing sunscreen every day when you go outside.

Precipitation is the name for water that falls from clouds! Rain is liquid precipitation. Snow is frozen precipitation that falls as ice crystals. Hail is frozen rain that forms in big thunderstorms. Sleet is rain that freezes before it hits the ground. All of these are types of precipitation. The water cycle never stops – water is always moving between the ground, the air, and back again!

Cumulus clouds are the fluffy white clouds! They usually mean good weather. When you see them, it is probably a nice day. But if they grow very tall and dark, they can become cumulonimbus clouds – thunderstorm clouds! Cloud watching is a fun way to predict the weather. Low, dark clouds often mean rain is coming. High, wispy clouds can mean a storm is on the way in a day or two.

When the temperature rises above freezing, snow melts and turns into water! That is why you see puddles on the ground after a snowstorm warms up. Snow is important because it provides water for rivers and lakes when it melts in the spring. Some animals, like polar bears and arctic foxes, have white fur to blend in with the snow – that is called camouflage.

An anemometer measures wind speed! The cups catch the wind and spin around. The faster they spin, the stronger the wind. Wind can be fun – it helps you fly a kite or sail a boat. But wind can also be dangerous – very strong winds from hurricanes and tornadoes can knock down trees and damage buildings. Wind is also a source of clean energy – wind turbines use the wind to make electricity!

You should go inside a safe building during a thunderstorm! Stay away from windows, and do not use phones that are plugged into the wall, computers, or other electronics. Do not take a bath or shower during a thunderstorm – water can conduct electricity. If you are outside and cannot get indoors, never stand under a tall tree. Crouch down low with your feet together. Lightning is beautiful but very dangerous – always respect it!

Spring is the season of new growth! After cold winter, the weather warms up. Snow melts, rain falls, and plants start growing again. Trees grow new leaves, flowers like tulips and daffodils bloom, and animals come out of hibernation. Birds build nests and lay eggs. Spring is a time of renewal and life. Summer is hot, autumn has falling leaves, and winter is cold with snow in many places.

A thermometer measures temperature! Most thermometers have a liquid inside that expands (gets bigger) when it is hot and contracts (gets smaller) when it is cold. You read the number next to the top of the liquid. Temperature is measured in degrees Fahrenheit (°F) in the United States and degrees Celsius (°C) in most other countries. Water freezes at 32°F (0°C) and boils at 212°F (100°C). Normal body temperature is about 98.6°F (37°C).

You should go to a basement or a small interior room (like a closet or bathroom) on the lowest floor! Stay away from windows. Cover your head with a blanket, pillow, or your arms. If you are in a mobile home, get out and go to a sturdy building. For hurricanes, you may need to evacuate (leave the area) if officials tell you to. Always listen to weather warnings and follow what your parents and teachers say. Being prepared keeps you safe!
