Pythagoras (c. 570-495 BCE) is best known for the Pythagorean Theorem, which states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides (a² + b² = c²). He also founded a philosophical and mathematical school that made many discoveries. Legend says he was so excited about his theorem that he sacrificed 100 oxen to the gods!

Euclid (c. 300 BCE) wrote 'Elements,' a 13-volume work that organized all known geometry into a logical system of definitions, postulates, and proofs. It was the most influential mathematics textbook in history and was used as the standard geometry text for over 2,000 years. Even today, the study of geometry is called "Euclidean geometry" in his honor!

Archimedes (c. 287-212 BCE) made many discoveries: the principle of buoyancy (Archimedes' Principle), the Archimedes screw for moving water, and methods for calculating areas and volumes. He famously ran through the streets shouting "Eureka!" (I have found it) when he discovered how to measure the volume of an irregular object. He also invented war machines that defended his city against Roman attack.

Brahmagupta (598-668 CE) wrote the 'Brahmasphutasiddhanta,' which contained the first clear rules for using zero in calculations. He described zero as a number, explained that adding zero to a number leaves it unchanged, and that subtracting zero has no effect. He also gave rules for operations with negative numbers. His work was centuries ahead of European mathematics and became a foundation of modern arithmetic.

Al-Khwarizmi (c. 780-850 CE) was a Persian mathematician who wrote 'Al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wa'l-Muqabala' (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing), which gave us the word 'algebra' (from 'al-jabr'). He also wrote about the Indian number system (including zero and place value) that eventually became the standard in Europe. The word 'algorithm' comes from the Latinized version of his name!

Leonardo Fibonacci (c. 1170-1250 CE) introduced the Fibonacci sequence to Europe, though it was known earlier in Indian mathematics. The sequence starts 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21,... where each number is the sum of the two before it. Fibonacci numbers appear in nature—in flower petals, pinecones, seashells, and even galaxy spirals! This sequence is one of the most beautiful and surprising patterns in mathematics.

Isaac Newton (1642-1727) independently invented calculus (along with Gottfried Leibniz). He also made important contributions to the study of infinite series, polynomials, and numerical methods. His laws of motion and universal gravitation revolutionized physics. Newton was so productive that he made all his major discoveries during a short period when his university was closed due to the plague!

Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) is considered the first computer programmer. She wrote the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine—the Analytical Engine designed by Charles Babbage. She saw that the machine could do more than just calculate numbers—it could process symbols and create music and art. She was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron but chose mathematics instead of poetry, calling it "poetical science."

Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) is often considered the greatest mathematician of all time, known as the 'Prince of Mathematicians.' He made groundbreaking contributions to number theory, algebra, statistics, geometry, astronomy, and many other fields. He began making major discoveries as a teenager, and his work is so important that his face appears on the German currency. He said, "Mathematics is the queen of the sciences!"

Modern mathematicians work on many important problems: cryptography (keeping online information safe), artificial intelligence, climate modeling (predicting weather and climate change), medical imaging (improving MRI and CT scans), data science (making sense of big data), financial modeling (understanding markets), and many other fields. Mathematics has never been more important in our technology-driven world. Every time you use a smartphone, visit a website, or play a video game, you're using the work of mathematicians!
