Columbus's voyages launched the Columbian Exchange: tomatoes, potatoes, maize, beans, squash, chili peppers, and tobacco traveled from the Americas to Europe; wheat, rice, horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and smallpox traveled from Europe to the Americas. Smallpox devastated native populations (up to 90% mortality). Columbus was not the first European to reach the Americas (Leif Erikson did around 1000 CE), but his voyages had lasting global impact.

Howard Carter discovered the tomb! He famously replied to Lord Carnarvon: "Yes, wonderful things!" when asked if he could see anything. The tomb was largely undisturbed because it had been buried under debris from later tomb construction. Tutankhamun became king at age 9 and died at age 19 (c. 1323 BCE). His tomb contained a solid gold coffin weighing 110 kg (240 lbs). The discovery was a global media sensation. The "curse" was invented to sell newspapers; statistically, expedition members lived normal lifespans. Carter spent ten years cataloging the artifacts. He died in 1939. They are considered the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century.

Röntgen discovered X-rays! The discovery revolutionized medicine. Doctors could now see inside the body without surgery. X-rays were quickly adopted for diagnosing broken bones, finding swallowed objects, and treating cancer (radiation therapy). Röntgen also discovered the medical use of X-rays. He was a conscientious scientist who declined financial gain from his discovery. He donated his Nobel Prize money to the University of Würzburg. Jenner developed the smallpox vaccine! The word "vaccination" comes from "vacca" (cow). Jenner's work built on the observation that cowpox provided immunity to smallpox. The original Mayflower Compact was lost; copies survive in William Bradford's journal. The ship Mayflower was a cargo ship (not designed for passengers). The voyage took 66 days. The Pilgrims originally intended to land in Virginia but were blown off course. The Mayflower returned to England in 1621 and was likely scrapped. A replica, Mayflower II, sailed from England to Plymouth in 1957 and is preserved as a museum ship. The story of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower is central to American history and Thanksgiving traditions. The passengers included William Bradford (later governor), Myles Standish (military leader), and John Alden (a cooper).

Old Ironsides is the nickname! The ship's hull is made of live oak (very dense wood), not iron. The Constitution is one of six original frigates authorized by the Naval Act of 1794. It was designed by Joshua Humphreys. The ship is still crewed by active-duty U.S. Navy sailors. It makes an annual "turnaround" cruise in Boston Harbor. The ship was saved from scrapping in 1830 after Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. published a poem, "Old Ironsides." The Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat (HMS Victory is older but in dry dock). It is docked at Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston. The ship has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The crew maintains the ship using traditional sailing skills.

The Strait of Magellan is named after him! The strait separates mainland South America from Tierra del Fuego. It was a key route before the Panama Canal opened. Magellan was Portuguese but sailed for Spain. The voyage proved that Earth was larger than Columbus thought and that the Americas were separate from Asia. Magellan's crew was the first to sail across the Pacific Ocean. They suffered from scurvy and starvation, eating rats, sawdust, and leather. Elcano was knighted by the King of Spain for completing the voyage. The expedition also proved that the Earth was round (though educated people already knew that). Magellan's name is also given to the Magellanic Clouds (two dwarf galaxies visible from the Southern Hemisphere).

Niña, Pinta, and Santa María were the ships! The Santa María was a carrack, while the Niña and Pinta were caravels (smaller, faster). The Niña (real name Santa Clara) and the Pinta (real name unknown) returned to Spain; the Santa María was wrecked. Columbus made three more voyages (1493, 1498, 1502). He explored the Caribbean islands and the mainland of Central and South America. Columbus was not the first European to reach the Americas (Leif Erikson had landed around 1000 CE), but his voyages initiated sustained contact between Europe and the Americas. Columbus died in 1506 in Valladolid, Spain. His remains were moved several times and are possibly in Seville Cathedral and also in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). Columbus's voyages launched the Columbian Exchange and the colonization of the Americas.

A German U-boat sank the Lusitania! The sinking was a major propaganda victory for the Allies. The ship sank in 18 minutes. The death toll included women and children. Germany claimed the ship was armed and carrying munitions. The United States protested, and Germany agreed to restrict U-boat warfare (the "Sussex Pledge"). Germany later resumed unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917, leading to the U.S. declaration of war. The wreck of the Lusitania is in 305 feet (93 meters) of water. The wreck site is a protected area. Diving is prohibited. The sinking was a precursor to the sinking of another liner, the Athenia (1939), which also killed Americans and contributed to WWII. The Lusitania disaster was a turning point in the war and in maritime history.

Charles Darwin sailed on the Beagle! He was 22 years old when the voyage began. The Beagle sailed from Plymouth, England, on December 27, 1831. Darwin collected thousands of specimens (fossils, plants, animals) and kept detailed notebooks. He suffered from seasickness but continued his work. The voyage lasted nearly five years. Darwin did not develop his theory of evolution until years after returning to England (he published "On the Origin of Species" in 1859). The Beagle made three voyages; the third was to survey Australia. The ship was sold in 1845, renamed, and eventually scrapped. A replica of the Beagle was built in 2009 and is on display in Chile. The Battle of Hampton Roads was the first ironclad battle! The battle changed naval warfare forever. The Monitor was designed by John Ericsson. It had a revolving turret and a low profile (only 18 inches above the water). The Virginia had sloping armor and rammed wooden ships. The battle was inconclusive; neither ship could penetrate the other's armor. The Virginia was scuttled by the Confederates in May 1862 to prevent capture. The Monitor sank in a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in December 1862. The wreck was discovered in 1973; the turret was raised in 2002. The battle was a sensation worldwide, and navies began converting to ironclads. The USS Monitor is a National Marine Sanctuary. The term "Monitor" became the designation for a type of warship with a revolving turret.

The Wright Flyer was the first powered aircraft! The Wright Brothers made four flights that day; the longest was 59 seconds (Wilbur piloting). The Wright Flyer is now displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The brothers did not fly publicly until 1908. They faced skepticism from the press and scientific community. They patented their flight control system and spent years defending it in court. The 747's production facility in Everett, Washington, is the largest building by volume in the world. The 747 also became a freighter, a presidential aircraft (Air Force One), a Space Shuttle carrier, and a luxury private jet. Over 1,500 747s were built. The 747 has a distinctive hump because the cockpit was raised to allow cargo loading through the nose (most 747s are passenger, but the design allowed for a freighter version). The first 747 prototype was named "City of Everett." The 747 set many records, including the fastest transatlantic flight (2 hours, 56 minutes, 2020 with strong tailwinds). The 747 is beloved by pilots and passengers for its size, range, and reliability.

The Space Shuttle was the first reusable spacecraft! The first shuttle flight was Columbia (STS-1, April 12, 1981). The shuttle carried the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit and serviced it five times. The shuttle built the International Space Station (ISS) over 37 flights. The Challenger disaster (January 28, 1986) was caused by O-ring failure. The Columbia disaster (February 1, 2003) was caused by foam damaging the heat shield during launch. The Concorde was built by Britain and France! The first flights were in 1969; commercial service began in 1976. The aircraft had a distinctive droop nose that lowered during takeoff and landing to improve pilot visibility. The Concorde flew primarily from London and Paris to New York and Washington, D.C. (and occasionally to other cities). The only fatal crash was Air France Flight 4590 (July 25, 2000), caused by a piece of debris on the runway. Balloons were later used for military observation (Civil War, WWI) and scientific research. Hot air balloons are still flown for recreation. The Montgolfier brothers are honored in aviation history. The word "balloon" comes from the French word "ballon" (large ball).

The Gutenberg Bible was the first major printed book! Before the printing press, books were handwritten by scribes (a process that could take years). A single book could cost as much as a house. Gutenberg's press could produce hundreds of copies quickly. The printing press is often called the most important invention of the second millennium. Gutenberg died in poverty, having lost a lawsuit over his invention. His press spread rapidly across Europe. By 1500, printing presses in over 200 cities had produced millions of books. The printing press is credited with democratizing knowledge and breaking the monopoly of the Church and wealthy elites on information. UNESCO declared the Gutenberg Bible a Memory of the World register item.

Thomas Edison is credited with the practical light bulb! His team developed a high-resistance bulb that lasted over 1,200 hours. He also invented the electrical distribution system, including the first power plant (Pearl Street Station, New York City, 1882). Edison was a prolific inventor with 1,093 U.S. patents. He invented the phonograph in 1877 (his first great invention). He also developed the motion picture camera (kinetoscope). He famously feuded with Nikola Tesla (former employee) over AC vs DC electricity. Edison was deaf in one ear due to a childhood illness. He married twice and had six children. His last patent was filed in 1931, the year he died. Henry Ford (friend) asked Edison's son to capture Edison's last breath in a test tube (the tube is preserved at the Henry Ford Museum).

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone! He was 29 when he invented it. Bell's mother and wife were both deaf, which influenced his work on sound and communication. The telephone patent (No. 174,465) was issued on March 7, 1876. Three days later, Bell successfully transmitted speech. Bell faced over 600 lawsuits over the patent, but none succeeded. He considered his most famous invention an intrusion on his work with the deaf. Bell also invented the metal detector (to try to find a bullet in President James Garfield after his assassination). He experimented with photophones (light-based communication) and hydrofoils. He refused to have a telephone in his study. Bell died in 1922; all telephones in North America were silenced for one minute in his honor. His name is remembered in Bell Labs (research institution).

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina was the site! The Wright Brothers made four flights that day; the longest was 59 seconds (Wilbur piloting). The Wright Flyer is now displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The brothers did not fly publicly until 1908. They faced skepticism from the press and scientific community. They patented their flight control system and spent years defending it in court. Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912; Orville lived until 1948 and saw the jet age. The Wright Brothers are considered the fathers of modern aviation. The centennial of their flight was celebrated in 2003 with reenactments. Their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, is preserved as a museum.

TCP/IP is Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol! Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn developed the protocol suite in the 1970s. TCP ensures data is delivered reliably, while IP handles addressing and routing. The World Wide Web (not the same as the Internet) was invented by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989. He created the first web browser and web server, and the first website (info.cern.ch) went live in 1991. The Internet has no single inventor; it is the result of decades of collaborative work. There are over 5 billion Internet users today (about 63% of the global population). The Internet is often called the greatest invention since the printing press.

The Ford Model T was the car! It was affordable – the price dropped from $850 in 1908 to $260 in 1925 (about $3,800 today). The Model T had a 20-horsepower engine, top speed of about 45 mph, and got 13-21 mpg. Ford's assembly line revolutionized manufacturing and was copied by industries worldwide. Ford was a controversial figure: he was anti-union (violent labor disputes), anti-Semitic (he published a newspaper spreading conspiracy theories), and opposed to US entry into WWII. He was friends with Thomas Edison and shared a "winter estate" in Fort Myers, Florida. The Ford Motor Company survives today, one of the largest automakers in the world. Henry Ford's grandson, Henry Ford II, led the company after his death.

ENIAC was the first electronic computer! It was a secret military project during World War II. ENIAC's first public demonstration was in 1946. It cost about $500,000 (over $6 million today). The machine was programmed by plugging wires and setting switches; reprogramming could take days. The ENIAC programmers – Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Meltzer, Fran Bilas, and Ruth Lichterman – were not invited to the celebratory dinner after ENIAC's demonstration. Their contributions were largely forgotten until the 1990s, when they were inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame (1997). ENIAC was decommissioned in 1955. Some of its panels are preserved at the Smithsonian and the University of Pennsylvania. The development of the transistor (1947) and the integrated circuit (1958) led to miniaturization and modern computers.

James Watt improved the steam engine! He was a Scottish instrument maker. Watt coined the term "horsepower" to compare his engine's output to draft horses (1 horsepower = 550 foot-pounds per second). He also invented the term "horsepower" to market his engines. The partnership of Boulton & Watt (with Matthew Boulton) became one of the most successful engineering firms in history. The Watt steam engine was used in mines, factories, mills, and later locomotives and steamships. The steam engine is considered the key invention of the Industrial Revolution. Watt was a member of the Lunar Society (a group of scientists and inventors in Birmingham). He retired a wealthy man. The SI unit of power (watt) and the light bulb company (Watt) are named after him.

Marconi is known for the radio! He was an Italian inventor who moved to England to develop his work. He founded the Marconi Company (which still exists as a telecommunications company). The first radio broadcast for entertainment was in 1920 (KDKA in Pittsburgh). Marconi also developed shortwave radio, which enabled long-distance communication. He was a supporter of Italian fascism (he joined the Fascist Party in 1923 and praised Mussolini). He died in Rome in 1937. Fascist Italy held a state funeral. In 1943, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Tesla's radio patents (filed in 1897) predated Marconi's (filed in 1900), but the decision had little practical effect. The debate over who invented the radio continues. The Nobel Prize remains with Marconi.

The transistor was invented at Bell Labs! The first transistor was a point-contact transistor, made of germanium. It was the size of a paperclip. Today, transistors are microscopic; a modern computer chip can contain over 50 billion transistors. The inventors were awarded the Nobel Prize. Shockley later became a controversial figure (he advocated for eugenics and was accused of racism). Bardeen was a quiet, modest genius; he won two Nobel Prizes in Physics. The integrated circuit (Jack Kilby, Robert Noyce, 1958-1959) allowed many transistors to be placed on a single chip, leading to microprocessors. Gordon Moore (co-founder of Intel) predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would double every two years (Moore's Law), which held for decades. The transistor revolutionized electronics and enabled the digital age.
