We use a clock to measure time during the day! Clocks have numbers from 1 to 12 and two hands (the hour hand and the minute hand). Watches also tell time. Before clocks, people used sundials (using the Sun's shadow) or hourglasses (using sand) to tell time. Now we have clocks everywhere – on phones, on microwaves, on walls, and even on our wrists!

The short hand is the hour hand. It tells you what hour it is. When the short hand points to 3, it is 3-something o'clock. The long hand (minute hand) tells you how many minutes past the hour. Together, they tell you the exact time! The hour hand moves from one number to the next in one full hour.

When the long hand is at 12, it is exactly that hour – no extra minutes. So if the short hand points to 5, the time is 5 o'clock (written as 5:00). Some common times: 3:00 is when the short hand is at 3 and long hand at 12; 7:00 is when short hand is at 7 and long hand at 12. You are learning to tell time!

When the long hand points to 6, it is 30 minutes past the hour (half past). The short hand is halfway between two numbers. So if the short hand is between 7 and 8, it is half past 7 – written as 7:30. Great job! Half past means 30 minutes after the hour. You can also say "seven thirty."

Long hand at 3 means 15 minutes past the hour – that is "quarter past." Short hand just past 2 means it is quarter past 2, or 2:15. "Quarter" means one-fourth – and 15 minutes is one-fourth (a quarter) of an hour. Quarter to means 15 minutes until the next hour. For quarter to 5, the short hand is almost at 5 and the long hand is at 9 (45 minutes past the hour, or 15 minutes until 5:00). Keep practicing!

Lunch is typically around 12:00 PM (noon) or 1:00 PM. PM stands for "post meridiem" which is Latin for "after noon." AM stands for "ante meridiem" meaning "before noon." So 8:00 AM is morning (before noon). 8:00 PM is evening (after noon). You wake up in the AM, eat lunch in the PM, eat dinner in the PM, and go to sleep at night in the PM!

Monday is the first day of the school week for most children. The school days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturday and Sunday are the weekend! The names of the days come from old languages – Tuesday is named after a Norse god, Wednesday after Odin, Thursday after Thor, and Friday after Frigg. Isn't that interesting?

The month after March is April. The order of months is: Jan (1), Feb (2), Mar (3), Apr (4), May (5), Jun (6), Jul (7), Aug (8), Sep (9), Oct (10), Nov (11), Dec (12). Knowing the months helps you understand birthdays, holidays, and seasons. For example, December has Christmas, October has Halloween, and July has summer in the northern half of the world!

Long hand at 4 means 20 minutes past the hour (because 4 × 5 = 20). Short hand just past 2 means it is 2:20. You can say "two twenty" or "twenty past two." Each number on the clock represents 5 minutes. Count by 5s around the clock: 1=5, 2=10, 3=15, 4=20, 5=25, 6=30, 7=35, 8=40, 9=45, 10=50, 11=55, 12=60 or 0 minutes. This is a great skill to practice!

The show starts at 4:30. First add the hour: 3:00 + 1 hour = 4:00. Then add the 30 minutes: 4:00 + 30 minutes = 4:30. Being able to add time is a very useful skill – it helps you know when to leave for school, when to finish homework, or when to meet a friend. You are becoming a time expert!

Money is what we use to buy things! Without money, we would have to trade (barter) – like trading your apple for my orange. Money makes buying and selling much easier. In the US, we use dollars and cents. Different countries use different kinds of money – the United Kingdom uses pounds, Japan uses yen, and most of Europe uses euros.

A penny is worth 1 cent. The symbol for cents is ¢. So 1 penny = 1¢. Abraham Lincoln is on the front (heads side). The back (tails side) shows the Lincoln Memorial. Pennies have been made since 1909 – that is over 100 years ago!

A nickel is worth 5 cents (5¢). The nickel got its name from the metal it used to be made from – nickel! Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, is on the front. The back shows his home, Monticello. Two nickels make 10 cents (a dime). Five nickels make 25 cents (a quarter).

A dime is worth 10 cents (10¢). Dimes are the smallest coin in size, but they are worth more than nickels and pennies. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president, is on the front. The back has a torch, an olive branch, and an oak branch. Ten dimes make one dollar. If you have a dime and a nickel, you have 15 cents!

A quarter is worth 25 cents (25¢). George Washington, the first president of the United States, is on the front. The back often shows an eagle, but some special quarters show different states or national parks. Four quarters make one dollar. One quarter is the same as two dimes and one nickel (10¢ + 10¢ + 5¢ = 25¢).

One dollar = 100 cents. That is why we say "one hundred cents makes a dollar." You can make a dollar in many ways: 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, 4 quarters, or combinations like 2 quarters (50¢) + 5 dimes (50¢) = $1.00. Dollar bills are made of a special cotton-paper blend, not regular paper!

2 quarters = 25¢ + 25¢ = 50¢. Add the dime: 50¢ + 10¢ = 60¢. Add the nickel: 60¢ + 5¢ = 65¢. You have 65 cents, which is also written as $0.65. Great adding! When you have 100 cents, you have one dollar. So 65 cents is 65/100 of a dollar, or 65%.

Change = amount paid – cost = 100¢ – 75¢ = 25¢. You should get back 25 cents, which is one quarter. Making change is an important real-life skill. When you buy something, you give money to the cashier, and they give you back the difference if you pay more than the cost. Always check your change!

The quarter is worth the most – 25 cents. Order from smallest to largest value: penny (1¢), nickel (5¢), dime (10¢), quarter (25¢). Remember: even though the dime is smaller than the nickel, it is worth more! Size does not always tell you the value. Always look at the number written on the coin or remember the color and edges.

2 quarters = 25¢ + 25¢ = 50¢ – that works! And 5 dimes = 10¢ × 5 = 50¢ also works. 10 nickels = 5¢ × 10 = 50¢. 50 pennies = 1¢ × 50 = 50¢. But 2 quarters + 1 dime = 50¢ + 10¢ = 60¢ – that is too much. There are so many ways to make the same amount of money. This is why understanding coins helps you count and pay in different ways. You are now a money master!

A circle is a shape with no corners and no straight sides. It is perfectly round. Circles are everywhere: wheels, plates, clocks, and cookies! All points on a circle are the same distance from the center. That is what makes it perfectly round!

The circle is the round shape (). Squares and rectangles have straight sides and corners. Triangles have three straight sides and three corners. Only the circle has no straight sides and no corners. Circles are special because they roll – that is why wheels are circles!

A checkerboard tile is a square because it has four sides that are all the same length and four corners. A square is a special type of rectangle where all sides are equal. Squares are everywhere: windows, picture frames, and even waffles can look like squares!

A triangle has three sides! That is where its name comes from: "tri" means three. Triangles are the only shape that cannot be pushed out of shape – they are very strong. You can find triangles in musical instruments (like a triangle instrument), in roof supports, and in slices of pizza!

A door is a rectangle because it has four sides: two long sides and two short sides. Opposite sides are equal. Rectangles are everywhere: doors, windows, sheets of paper, cell phones, and televisions. A square is a special kind of rectangle where all four sides are equal!

A rectangle has 4 corners (vertices). A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners. A square also has 4 sides and 4 corners. A triangle has 3 corners. A circle has 0 corners. Knowing how many sides and corners shapes have helps you tell them apart!

A baseball is a sphere! A sphere is a 3D circle – it is round in every direction. A sphere has no flat faces, no edges, and no corners. It just rolls! Other examples of spheres: planets, oranges, and bubbles. Good job learning about 3D shapes!

A checkerboard tile is a perfect square – all sides are the same length, and it has four right-angle corners. Squares are everywhere! Some other square objects: sticky notes, some picture frames, and floor tiles. A square is a very balanced and symmetrical shape.

The answer is a triangle! Triangles have three sides and three corners. The word "triangle" comes from "tri" (three) and "angle" (corner). Triangles are the strongest shape – engineers use them to build bridges, roofs, and towers because they do not bend easily!

The circle is different because it has no straight sides and no corners. Squares, rectangles, and triangles all have straight sides and corners. Circles are smooth and round. Being able to sort and classify shapes by their properties (sides, corners, curves) is an important geometry skill!

9 balloons - 4 balloons = 5 balloons left. When you subtract, you start with the bigger number (the total) and take away the smaller number. The answer tells you how many are left. You can also think: "What number plus 4 equals 9?" That is 5, because 5 + 4 = 9! Subtraction is the opposite of addition!

6 - 0 = 6. Taking away zero leaves you with the same amount you started with. This works for any number: 10 - 0 = 10, 25 - 0 = 25, 100 - 0 = 100. Zero is a very special number in subtraction!
