The word "bug" has the short U sound. B-U-G. The letter in the middle is U.

CVC words are three-letter words with a consonant, then a vowel, then a consonant. Examples: C-A-T, D-O-G, S-U-N. In CVC words, the vowel almost always makes its short sound. What is the missing vowel in this CVC word: B_G? It is a B sound, then a vowel, then a G sound. What vowel makes this word "bug"?

Say "mop": mmm-ooo-ppp. The sound in the middle is the short O sound like in "octopus".

Listen to this word (say it out loud): "mop". What vowel sound do you hear in the middle of "mop"? M-O-P. The middle letter is O. Is that short A, short E, short I, short O, or short U?

Which word rhymes with "net"? Say "net" and then each choice: "pet" rhymes with net. "Pat" has short A. "Pot" has short O. "Put" has a different vowel sound.

Let us review all five short vowel sounds! Look at this word: "net". N-E-T. What is the short vowel sound in "net"? Say it: nnn-eh-ttt. The vowel is E, and it makes the short E sound like in "egg". Which of these words has the short E sound? Choose the word that rhymes with "net".
