Introduction

Every year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee captures the attention of millions as young contestants spell some of the most difficult words in the English language. These words are chosen not just for their obscurity, but for their complexity, origins, and ability to test mastery of spelling rules. Many come from Latin and Greek, while others reflect English’s borrowing from French, German, and beyond. Looking back at words from past competitions gives spellers insight into what to expect and how to prepare. Here are 100 words, grouped by origin and theme, that have challenged—and sometimes crowned—spelling bee champions.

Latin-Derived Words

Latin is the backbone of academic and technical vocabulary in English. Because Latin was the language of law, religion, and scholarship for centuries, its influence runs deep in words related to science, government, and abstract thought. Latin-derived words often feature recognizable prefixes (sub-, inter-, trans-) and suffixes (-tion, -ous, -ity), which make them powerful for building word families. While Latin spellings are usually consistent, the challenge lies in recognizing root meanings and remembering long, multi-syllable structures such as magnanimous or intransigent. Spelling bees favor these words because mastering Latin roots provides clues to thousands of English terms.

Examples:

1. abrogate – to repeal or abolish
2. belligerent – hostile, aggressive
3. carnivorous – meat-eating
4. deleterious – harmful
5. gregarious – sociable
6. intransigent – uncompromising
7. juvenile – young
8. loquacious – talkative
9. mutable – changeable
10. nefarious – wicked
11. obfuscate – to confuse
12. perfidious – treacherous
13. quandary – state of uncertainty
14. resilient – able to recover quickly
15. sanctimonious – hypocritically holy
16. tenacious – persistent
17. ubiquitous – present everywhere
18. venerable – respected
19. volition – will, choice
20. corpulent – fat
21. audacious – bold
22. incredulous – unwilling to believe
23. magnanimous – generous
24. precocious – advanced for one’s age
25. benevolent – kind, charitable

Greek-Derived Words

Greek has supplied English with much of its scientific and philosophical vocabulary. Words of Greek origin often contain letter combinations that don’t follow standard English spelling patterns, such as ph for the “f” sound (philosophy), ch for a “k” sound (chorus), and y used as a vowel (mythology). Compound structures are also common, combining roots like geo- (earth) and graph- (write) to form words such as geography. For spellers, the challenge lies in recognizing these unusual patterns and remembering that Greek loves to stack roots together. Because of this, Greek-derived words often appear long, scientific, and complex—perfect for spelling competitions.

Examples:
26. anachronism – something out of time
27. bibliophile – book lover
28. chrysanthemum – a flower
29. dichotomy – division into two parts
30. euphemism – polite substitution
31. hierarchy – ranking system
32. isothermal – equal temperature
33. kaleidoscope – optical toy
34. metamorphosis – transformation
35. neophyte – beginner
36. onomatopoeia – word imitating sound
37. pseudonym – false name
38. psychosis – severe mental disorder
39. synchronous – occurring at the same time
40. theocracy – rule by religion
41. xenophobia – fear of foreigners
42. zygote – fertilized egg cell
43. philology – study of language
44. hypothesis – assumption for testing
45. apotheosis – highest point
46. catastrophe – disaster
47. orthodox – traditional, strict
48. rhapsody – enthusiastic expression
49. cosmopolitan – worldly, sophisticated
50. ephemeral – lasting a short time

French-Derived Words

Characteristics of French-Derived Words

French has had a profound influence on English vocabulary, especially after the Norman Conquest of 1066, when French became the language of law, government, and high society in England. Words borrowed from French often appear elegant, cultural, or sophisticated, covering fields such as food (soufflé, cuisine), fashion (couture, silhouette), and government (bureaucracy, parliament). For spellers, French-derived words are especially tricky because of their silent letters, unexpected vowel combinations, and accents (é, ç, è). Spellings like façade, cliché, and camouflage challenge contestants since pronunciation doesn’t always match spelling. Mastering French-derived words requires practice with irregular endings, attention to detail, and familiarity with accent marks—features that make them favorites in spelling bees.

French gave English thousands of words in law, food, fashion, and culture. Many French words challenge spellers with silent letters and unusual endings.

Examples:
51. ballet – dance performance
52. bureaucracy – government administration
53. camouflage – disguise
54. chauffeur – driver
55. cliché – overused phrase
56. debris – scattered remains
57. détente – easing of tensions
58. elite – superior group
59. façade – front of a building (figuratively: false front)
60. genre – category of art or literature
61. liaison – connection, go-between
62. matinee – daytime performance
63. negligée – light dressing gown
64. parfait – layered dessert
65. rapport – harmonious relationship
66. souvenir – keepsake
67. silhouette – outline or shadow
68. trompe l’oeil – realistic painting technique
69. valet – personal assistant
70. victoire – victory

German-Derived Words

German has contributed words that often look and sound heavier, with compound structures and strong consonant clusters. Common fields of borrowing include food (sauerkraut, pretzel), science (zeitgeist, leitmotif), and everyday expressions (kindergarten, gesundheit). Unlike French, German spelling is more phonetic, but its compounds can be daunting because they stack multiple roots together into long words, such as Doppelgänger or Schadenfreude. The use of umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and unique letter pairings like sch and tz also trip up spellers unfamiliar with German rules. These words stand out in spelling bees because they combine memorable sounds with uncommon structures in English.

Examples:
71. angst – deep anxiety
72. blitzkrieg – lightning war
73. doppelgänger – ghostly double
74. ersatz – substitute, inferior copy
75. gesundheit – “bless you” after a sneeze
76. hinterland – remote region
77. kaput – broken
78. kindergarten – preschool
79. lager – type of beer
80. leitmotif – recurring theme
81. poltergeist – noisy ghost
82. rucksack – backpack
83. schadenfreude – pleasure from others’ misfortune
84. übermensch – “superman” concept from Nietzsche
85. wunderkind – child prodigy

Miscellaneous Borrowings

English has borrowed words from languages worldwide, many of which stump spelling bee contestants.

Examples:
86. algebra – Arabic origin (mathematics)
87. safari – Swahili (journey)
88. tsunami – Japanese (harbor wave)
89. karaoke – Japanese (empty orchestra)
90. chutney – Hindi (spicy condiment)
91. samosa – Hindi/Urdu (fried pastry)
92. pajamas – Hindi/Persian (loose clothing)
93. tundra – Russian (treeless plain)
94. sputnik – Russian (satellite)
95. czar/tsar – Russian (emperor)
96. kangaroo – Aboriginal Australian
97. boomerang – Aboriginal Australian
98. yoga – Sanskrit (union, discipline)
99. typhoon – Chinese/Arabic hybrid
100. origami – Japanese (paper folding)

Whether students are learning about ecosystems, weather, forces, or matter, having a strong grasp of key science words helps them understand the world around them. It also prepares them for classroom discussions, projects, and science tests with confidence.

Let’s take a fun and educational journey through some of the most common science topics taught in elementary school—and along the way, we’ll uncover some amazing facts and vocabulary words that bring science to life!

Ecosystems and Living Things

Did you know that a single teaspoon of soil can contain more living organisms than there are people on Earth? That’s because ecosystems—whether in a forest, ocean, or backyard garden—are buzzing with life, big and small.

Important Concepts:

Every ecosystem has producers, consumers, and decomposers.

Animals and plants depend on each other through food chains and food webs.

A habitat is where an organism lives, and it must meet all of its needs to survive.

Did You Know?
• Some fungi, like mushrooms, help decompose dead plants and return nutrients to the soil!
• Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems, often called the “rainforests of the sea.”

Weather and Climate

Weather is what’s happening outside today. Climate is what usually happens over a long time. Understanding weather helps students observe nature, make predictions, and even plan what to wear!

Important Concepts:

Weather includes temperature, precipitation, humidity, and wind.

Tools like thermometers, rain gauges, and anemometers help measure the weather.

Clouds come in many types, such as cumulus and stratus.

Did You Know?
• Lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun!
• Snowflakes always have six sides—and no two are exactly the same.

Matter and Its Properties

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. That includes everything around you—your desk, the air, your lunch, and even you!

Important Concepts:

Physical changes (like melting ice) don’t change what something is made of, but chemical changes (like rust) do.

Mass is how much matter something has, and volume is how much space it takes up.

Did You Know?
• Your body is made up of mostly oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen—just like stars!
• Air may seem invisible, but it’s made up of matter too—it has mass and takes up space.

Forces and Energy

From the moment you wake up to when you go to bed, forces and energy are all around you. They help you move, play, and learn how things work.

Important Concepts:

Tools and Inquiry

Science isn’t just about facts—it’s about asking questions and finding answers. That’s where scientific tools and the scientific method come in!

Why Science Vocabulary Matters

Knowing science words helps students:

Understand and explain concepts

Prepare for science quizzes and standardized tests

Build reading comprehension in science texts

Ask better questions and explore more deeply

Using vocabulary games, flashcards, puzzles, and even word searches can help make learning science terms fun and memorable!

Use Flashcards

A highly effective method for teaching children these words involves utilizing flashcards. These visually appealing cards prove instrumental in expanding their vocabulary and enhancing their learning abilities at an accelerated pace.

To create these flashcards, you can opt for index cards or construction paper, or just use the generated cards from Spelling Bee Ninja app.
Write each sight word in bold letters and consider including an accompanying image. For instance, draw a picture of a dog and affix the word “dog” to reinforce understanding for children.
The incorporation of visual representations plays a crucial role in aiding children’s memory retention and establishing connections between words and images.
You can also use the flashcards generated by the Spelling Bee Ninja app.

How to use cards?

Commence by introducing a set of new words each week, providing clarity for the children on the learning objectives. Display the picture on the front of the flashcard, verbalize the corresponding word, and encourage the students to repeat it. Next, prompt them to spell the word and incorporate it into a sentence.

Utilize flashcards in diverse ways.

turning them into engaging games that captivate your students. Read-aloud sessions are crucial; hold up the flashcard while pronouncing the word until the students grasp its recognition.

Encourage sentence creation using the introduced words.

Task students with finding and reading aloud the words within sentences. Leverage technology by exploring online interactive flashcards, allowing students to practice sight words independently on computers, smartphones, or tablets.

Incorporate daily reading aloud of sight words.

By actively pointing them out when they appear in texts. Establish a word wall in the classroom for constant reinforcement. Additionally, consider using sight words songs available online to enhance spelling and contextual usage. Engage students with a fun twist by hiding sight word flashcards in the classroom, prompting them to discover, spell, read aloud, and use each word in a sentence.

Regularly observe and evaluate students’ reading and writing skills to provide targeted assistance for improvement. Conduct formal assessments to gauge the overall class level and track progress over time. Monitoring progress through these methods, including short assessments, fosters an enjoyable and effective learning experience for the students.

Conclusion

Incorporating all these elements into your classroom is crucial for enhancing students’ learning experiences and advancing their fundamental reading and spelling skills.

The utilization of the 1st-grade sight word list serves as a pivotal tool in guiding your students on their learning journey. By integrating these components, learning becomes an enjoyable experience for students, fostering their enthusiasm for the tasks at hand. Not only does this approach make teaching more enjoyable for you, but it also ensures active engagement with your students throughout the class.

Public speaking in English may be somewhat challenging as most of its speakers can’t avoid mispronounced words. This is merely because there are lots of phrases that most of speakers struggle in pronouncing, at least once or twice. Basically, there are lots of words that are mispronounced through decades.

Basically, there are some common words that are mispronounced and here are the right ways to pronounce.

Coup de grace

koo-de-GRAHS

It is actually a French phrase that is very common to use in English. The real meaning is ‘a stroke of grace’ that means killing enemies out of their misery. The phrase is transformed into English as mispronounced words.

Most English speakers pronounce it as “coo-de-gra. It could be that people are aware that leaving out the last “s” is very common for French phrase.

Prestigious

pre-STI-jus

This phrase means having prestige or being honored. Yet, this is one of so many mispronounced words. Lots of people pronounce the first “i” in the word as “ee”. The fact is it is required to pronounce it as short “i,”. Meanwhile the second “i” should not be emphasized. The pronunciation should be “pre-sti-jus,” instead of “pre-stee-jus”.

Anyway

EH-nee-way

It seems to be an easy word to pronounce though there are people mispronounce it. Some people just add “s” at the end of the word. Even worse, “Anyways” becomes more and more common. So, it is clear that this word is ANYWAY and there is no additional ‘s’

Tenet

TEN-eht

A word tenet with one “n” means a basic belief. Meanwhile, a tenant with a second “n” means a person who rents from a landlord, whether it is a house or an apartment.

Some people even say tenant instead of tenet, even if they mean to speak the latter word.

Electoral

ee-LECK-tor-al

This term is very common in which it means the President choosing process. However, this word is one of the most mispronounced words though this word has such exact meaning.

For your information, the accent is not on the third, but on the second syllable. It is supposed to be “ee-LECK-tor-al,” instead of “ee-leck-TOR-al.” Some people also say “ee-leck-TOR-ee-al”.

Hyperbole

high-PER-boh-lee

This phrase means exaggeration. This is not a common word to speak but many people still mispronounce it. Some people even mention “Hyper-bowl.”

It is true that this phrase is originated from the ancient Greek. Most Greek words with final “e” is pronounced like epi-tuh-mee in epitome.

Mischievous

MIS-chuh-vus

Lots of speakers pronounce this phrase with an additional syllable; “mis-CHEE-vee-ee-us”. Some of them even add an extra “i”. This kind of mistake already occurred since the 16th century and it still often occurs now.

Segue

SEG-way

It is much simpler to pronounce this word as “seg-u.” Segue means to lead from one thing to another without any pause. This word should be pronounced just like the Segway.

Affidavit

Ah-fuh-day-vit

Some people mistakenly pronounce it as ah-fee-day-vid.

This word means a written, legal statement that is used in court as evidence.

Remuneration

re-MYOO-nuh-ray-shun

This phrase is very common among business people. This word means payment received after the accomplishment for work or service. Almost every speaker flips the “m” and the “n”. So, instead of speaking “re-MYOO-nuh-ray-shun”, it is often pronounced “re-NUM-eration. It can be because people think that it relates to NUMbers.

Acai

ah-sah-EE

It is much easier to say uh-KAI, instead of the right pronunciation ah-sah-EE

Acai is a kind of berry in purple. It is a good and delicious kind of fruits. It is very nutritious especially when it is served with vanilla yogurt or granola.

Prostrate

PRA-straight

It is common to hear this word without an “r”. This is because it is very common to confuse this word with “prostate.”

For your information, prostrate means lying face down. Meanwhile, prostate with one “r” refers to a male organ.

Comptroller

con-TROLL-er

This word refers to a management-level position that deals with accounting and financial reporting. Believe it or not, this word has been very confusing since the 16th century.

Notwithstanding its spelling, it’s theoretically pronounced without the “p”. ‘Magically, the letter ‘M” is replaced by “N”.

The spelling is weird because it relates to compte, a French word.

Ophthalmologist

off-tha(l)-MOLL-o-gist

Basically, it is common to speak “oph,” as an “f” though many people still speak ‘op’, just like ‘optic’. This word is from the Greek word “ophthalmos” that means “the eye”.

There are two “l” letters in this word that it is even harder to pronounce. The good news is, we don’t have to pronounce it.

Quay

kee

Quay is a platform that is built next to bodies of water. It is used for either loading and unloading freight or passengers. Many people pronounce it incorrectly as “kway.” The right pronounce is actually “kee.”

The spelling seems odd because it is originated from the French word. So, it is pronounced as its original word.

Almond

AHL-muhnd

This very common word has such a high percentage of mispronounced words. Lots of people still pronounce it as AL-mond.

The mispronunciation of this word happens when the emphasis is heavily placed on the “l” at the start of the phrase.

Aluminum

Correct: uh-LOO-mi-num

This is an American English with similar meaning as “Aluminium” in British English. People mispronounce it as uh-LUM-i-num Aluminum is a kind of mostly used metal. Lot sof speakers mispronounce this word as the first “u,” is creating an “uh” sound instead of the right “ew” sound.

Arkansas

AR-kuhn-saw

Arkansas is the name of a state that is located near the Mississippi River in the southern United States. The end syllable “-saw” is mostly where people mispronounce it. Some people, mostly non native speakers pronounce it as AR-kuhn-sas

Asphalt

ASS-fawlt

This word refers to the thick, black liquid for paving roads. Even lots of natives mispronounce this phrase as Az-fawlt. More often as they don’t feel sure about pronouncing the “ph” part of the word.

A List of First-Grade High-Frequency Words with Flashcards of Varying Difficulty

Teaching first graders is fun when you engage their energy. Their enthusiasm can also inspire you to find better teaching approaches. Start with the least difficult words before gradually expanding their vocabulary.

Once most students are familiar with the basic words, you can mix words from different levels. This helps assess their recognition skills and determine when to introduce more challenging words. Repetition is essential, even for words they have already memorized. There are no shortcuts to memorization, but frequent exposure to high-frequency words makes learning easier.

Least Difficult Words

The words in this category are commonly used in daily conversations. Starting with pronouns can help students introduce themselves. They can reinforce their learning by using these words in simple sentences.

Keep in mind that this is just a partial list of easy first-grade high-frequency words. You can find additional examples online or in everyday situations.

High Frequency Words – Difficult – FlashCards

How Flashcards Can Help

Many people believe flashcards are only useful for nouns or words tied to specific objects like fruits and animals. However, they are also effective for introducing abstract concepts like time and other high-frequency words.

For first graders, start with simple and short words to help them grasp their meanings. These words should also be versatile enough to encourage students to learn independently and identify them on their own.

To teach first-grade high-frequency words efficiently with flashcards, use multiple sets of cards. A variety of words and images—even variations of the same word—will help students better understand the meaning.

You can either download pre-made templates or create your own. The students will help determine which types of cards work best for their learning style. Some may prefer large images, while others may focus more on the words.

It’s important to keep the learning process fun and engaging. Over time, you’ll see that flashcards are just tools to help them learn the language.

These cards work best when incorporated into different situations. After the initial introduction, you can use them to reinforce students’ memory and encourage them to explore new words on their own.

When to Use Flashcards

First graders come with varying levels of knowledge, so some may resist using flashcards and prefer methods they are already familiar with. As a teacher, it’s important to know the right time to introduce and reinforce the use of flashcards.

Flashcards are most effective for introducing and reinforcing words. They aren’t magic tools that can be used repeatedly. Over time, the novelty wears off, so it’s important to refocus students and keep the lessons engaging.

Consider using blank cards to introduce new words or make-up words. An interactive exchange among students can also help reinforce what they’ve learned through flashcards.

Ultimately, flashcards are just tools. Don’t rely on them exclusively—mix them with other teaching methods. The key is for first graders to understand the tasks and feel confident enough to complete them. Finding ways to keep them engaged and creative in exploring language is one of the challenges you’ll face.

After exploring first-grade high-frequency words with flashcards, you’ll realize that even simple words can be exciting. The flashcard method is easy to follow, but the real challenge is keeping the students’ attention. Once you figure out the right approach, you can make learning fun and introduce even more words with ease.

Many people believe that Halloween words have to be scary because of how the stories are. However, who says you can’t have fun at the end of October? There are numerous activities such as exploring the haunted house, and going on a trick or treat with friends, and the best is dressing up as someone you love. But first, let’s get to know more about the night and what are the words you can explore.

How to Make Halloween Fun Again

While being spooky and scary is the norm when it comes to October 31st, it sure doesn’t always be that way. What started as a three-day celebration to commemorate the dead turned into synonymous with eerie stuff. This shift in meaning and understanding may take some of the essence away. But eventually, it’s all about the day to celebrate everyone in life and death.

Here are several ideas on how you can make Halloween words less spooky. Even better, you also can encourage others to take part in the activities.

Eerie Meenie Tiny Story

To many people, Halloween takes root from the old Celtic festivals, especially Samhain. This is also the root of several stories that you can find only on Halloween. Or even better, they only happen during Halloween.

The stories about witches, shapeshifters, and other spiritual beings are always interesting to watch. And so you can have more fun with Halloween words when you can tell a scary story in 200 words or less.

You can explore numerous mediums such as poetry, short stories, four-panel comics, and other storytelling mediums. Then you will see that you don’t have to use blatantly spooky words such as ghouls to monsters to be scary.

Fear stems from a dark corner inside one’s mind. Therefore, your imagination plays a huge part in determining how scary one thing is. Remember, using fancy Halloween words doesn’t always make it scary.

For the younger students, this storytelling task can be very challenging with their limited vocabulary. Therefore, you need to set the prompts and guide them to use the right words. They will see that even plain and regular words can sound scary too.

Words to Tickle Your Pun-ny Bones

So many costumes take inspiration from puns that you often hear. It’s all about how you can interpret the Halloween words in the most creative ways possible. Anyhow, here are some of the puns that you can use for your next costume. Let’s see if you can see the original lines and laughs along.

Welcome to the Pun-kin patch!

Let’s have a gourd time!

Keep calm and pumpkin on!

Witchful thinking

Wicked awesome

It’s a brew-tiful day

Twix or treat!

Laughing until I’m coffin.

It’s time for some skele-fun.

Ghouls just want to have fun!

Finding puns may not be easy, but they are surely fun. Keep encouraging the students to think of more puns to write and see who gets the best and funniest puns of all.

Scary Sweet Tooth

During Halloween, candies and chocolates are some of the most favorite items to have. You can get them for free from your trick-or-treat walk. Several restaurants and café even have special items that they only sell during Halloween.

Rather than competing on who gets the most candies, you can set up a competition on who gets a specific candy. This is perfect for a class activity where the students have to randomly take one candy from the bag and have to deceive others using words.

Taking inspiration from the popular Impostor game, you can divide the students into several smaller groups and have one of them act as the impostor. They need to describe the candy, but wrongly, to mislead the other players. When an impostor wins the round, they can keep the candy. Naturally, the roles are set randomly to give everyone an equal chance to trick others.

Halloween Words Game

Come Halloween means a perfect time to introduce some scary-sounding words. One of the best games to have is Hangman, which also fits with the Halloween theme. You can have a set of words and have the students guess the word in five or fewer guesses.

For older students, the word can be longer and also more complex. They also can have the Halloween-themed scrabble. Instead of using the actual Scrabble board, you can use the whiteboard and have one of numerous scary Halloween words in the center. And the students are doing it individually and must compile as many words as possible. The student with the most scary-sounding words wins the Halloween Scrabble. Of course, these words have to be real and not puns.

Onomatopeia in Halloween

For some strange reason, people hardly talk about onomatopoeia during Halloween. While at the same time, it’s hard to ignore these words you hear and feel. Sometimes, these words are the best way to showcase the spooks.

For example, rather than saying that you are afraid of vampires. You can say vampires make your heart go ba-dum ba-dum. With onomatopeia, you can see and feel these words rather than speak them out loud.

Give it some time and you will see so many examples of onomatopeia around you. To the students using less common words such as “meow,” “woof,” “howl,” and even “roar” can be very exciting. They will learn that there are a million ways to show and explain what is scary and why is it scary.

The words that also describe the sounds can bring out the fear as it will excite their imaginations. For the younger students, it can be in the form of a role play, where you ask them for the word and repeat it several times. While the older students can be more challenging as they have to write more or find onomatopeia in daily life.

Incorporate these words in your lessons to make them more interactive, let’s see how.

Incorporate these words in your lessons

Create a word wall

First of all, you will need to create a word wall. You will see that by doing so, the words will be displayed in the classroom and you will be able to encourage your students to use the words in their writing. You can also encourage them to use these words throughout the day. There are also some games that you can try out with your students so that they will also be able to use these words as frequently as they would like.

Use writing prompts

You can also take use of writing prompts. These usually include sight words and this will help your students when it comes to improving your writing skills. There are a lot of reading activities that you can take into consideration as you will be using these words. You can create a list of words and as the students will play with these words, they will enjoy this very much.

Encourage collaborative learning

Collaborative learning is another thing to take into consideration. You will have the students to work in groups and you will help them in creating different stories and essays. This will help students when it comes to memorizing words and they will also learn a lot of things about the importance of collaboration. This will make them better persons and they will also enjoy the fact that they can collaborate with other students.

Spelling Bee

You can also organize a spelling bee competition and this will also help a lot your students. They will like competing and you will see that this will also help students when it comes to memorizing words. This will also improve their spelling skills and they will become better as they will do so.
You can also incorporate technology when it comes to your lessons. This way, your lessons will become much more engaging and you can take use of different things available online and offline. You can use whiteboards, play online games with your students and also take use of some educational apps in order for your students to learn a lot of sight words.

Interaction

You can easily make spelling fun for students and this means that this way the students will be able to practice spelling in a fun and also in an engaging way. They will learn how to spell faster and they will also have fun as they will be doing so.

For example you could ask to your students to sort different words. This means that they can sort the words based on different spelling patterns. This will help the students identify faster the common spelling rules and patterns. Students can also use visual aids such as diagrams, charts and also posters. This way students can visualize spelling rules and also patterns.

Use games

Spelling games such as Scrabble, Hangman or Boggle can also be a choice that your students will like a lot. This will help them in order to practice spelling in both an engaging and a fun way. Writing activities are always a fun thing to do and you should certainly take this into consideration. You will see that the students will like to practice their spelling in such activities.

Promote Reading

Reading is also an important thing to take into consideration. You should always make time for silent reading for your students to practice reading. This will give your students the opportunity to practice and they will also have to explore books that interest them. You can also create different reading challenges in your classes. You can encourage your students to read different books in a month or year and you can offer them prizes or different incentives for those who complete the challenge.

Conclusions

Every student learns differently and as a teacher it is really important to remember this. Some students may thrive through interactive games and also activities and others may learn through writing prompts and collaborative learning. It is important to vary your teaching methods in order for the students to learn in different ways. This way, you can be sure that your students will learn the needed things and they will enjoy the full process of doing so.
Make sure that you will be able to cater individual learning styles for your students and make learning fun. By taking all of these things into consideration you will see that the students will manage to have an improved vocabulary at the end of the class.
They will manage to have the skills needed in order to become better in time and this is exactly what you need to take into consideration when you are teaching them these things.

Introduction

The primary issue among middle school spelling words is the students seem to have difficulties memorizing them.

Sometimes it may look that words are too difficult or complex to be memorized, but if you know the right ways to do it, things get easier.
Along with the words list, you will find in this article some strategies that could help your students in memorizing how to spell middle school words. Try them with your students and remember: when you teach spelling to middle school students, each student may react differently to each memorizing strategy, it is up to you to be proactive in adapting to the methods to the single student.

Visual strategy

When teaching middle school spelling words, using visual strategy is a popular technique that many teachers use. Middle school students can learn the words faster when they can link each word with the imagery. This is especially helpful for longer and non-abstract words. Many students use this technique because it’s fairly easy to do. They can use clue cards and games to use this strategy.

Mnemonic Strategy

The mnemonic is very helpful for many things. It’s good to memorize numbers and especially for middle school spelling words. However, it can be highly personal. Since there are endless combinations of mnemonic patterns, you can be as creative as possible. And you can tell your student the same.
You also can combine the mnemonic strategy with the word’s origin. For example, the word “poli” in “metropolis,” “acropolis,” and “political” is a Greek word that means much or many. It’s understood that this strategy is popular because it can morph into various things.

Structural strategy

This one works best when your students already know the base words. It is important to recognize eventual root words and the origin of the word itself, in this way the students can deduct the spelling of the words instead of memorizing it. Check out here why root words are so important.
Also it could be a good idea to check these list: words from Japanese, words from Latin, words from Arabic.

Practice is key

Even though the aim is to memorize faster, it hardly makes a difference when they hardly practice. The students need to remember that they still need constant and regular practice on the words. It will help them to memorize faster and better.
Moreover you need to make the practice fun at times. Repetition is important. But you need to space the practice time to get the best result.

The post 🐝 Middle School Spelling Words – How To Memorize Fast? appeared first on Spelling Bee Ninja.
