Charles Darwin (1809–1882) was an English naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection changed biology forever. His book "On the Origin of Species" (1859) presented compelling evidence that species change over time through a process of natural selection. This theory explained the incredible diversity of life on Earth and remains the foundation of modern biology. Did you know? Darwin originally studied medicine and then theology before his passion for nature led him to become a naturalist. His voyage on the HMS Beagle (1831–1836) was the turning point in his life, exposing him to the incredible variety of plants, animals, and fossils that would inspire his theory.

Darwin's voyage on the HMS Beagle took him around the world, but the most important stop was the Galápagos Islands, a group of volcanic islands off the coast of Ecuador. There, Darwin observed that finches on different islands had different types of beaks, adapted to the specific foods available on each island. This was a key observation that led him to develop his theory of natural selection. Fun fact: Darwin also observed giant tortoises on the Galápagos Islands that differed from island to island. He collected many specimens, including finches, tortoises, and fossils, but he didn't fully understand their significance until years later when he returned to England and began to analyze his findings. The finches are now famously known as "Darwin's finches."

The theory of natural selection is based on three key principles: variation (individuals in a population vary in their traits), inheritance (some of these variations are passed on to offspring), and differential survival (individuals with traits better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce). Over time, this leads to changes in the population. Did you know? Darwin was not the first person to suggest that evolution occurs. Several thinkers before him, including his grandfather Erasmus Darwin, had proposed that life changes over time. It caused a huge controversy because it challenged the prevailing belief that species were created by God and did not change. Fun fact: Darwin delayed publishing his theory for over 20 years because he was afraid of the controversy it would cause. He only published after another naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, independently came up with a very similar theory of evolution by natural selection. Wallace's letter to Darwin, outlining his own theory, prompted Darwin to finally publish his work. This is one of the most famous examples of simultaneous discovery in the history of science.

Darwin also studied artificial selection, the process by which humans breed plants and animals for specific traits. He observed how pigeon breeders and farmers could create dramatic changes in plants and animals through selective breeding. This was a powerful analogy for how natural selection could work in nature. Did you know? Darwin was an avid pigeon breeder and raised many different varieties of pigeons to study how traits could be changed through selective breeding. He even belonged to two pigeon-breeding clubs! His observations of artificial selection helped him understand how natural selection could work over much longer periods of time. Darwin's theory had profound implications for human origins. In his later book "The Descent of Man" (1871), Darwin explicitly applied his theory to humans, arguing that humans are descended from apelike ancestors. This was even more controversial than his first book and caused an uproar in both scientific and religious circles. Fun fact: Darwin did not say that humans evolved directly from modern monkeys or apes. He argued that humans share a common ancestor with apes—a distant relative that lived millions of years ago. This distinction is still important today, as it clarifies that evolution is not a straight line but a branching tree of life. Darwin's conclusion about human ancestry was revolutionary and remains a fundamental concept in modern biology.

Darwin was deeply interested in geology and fossils. During his voyage on the Beagle, he collected many fossils and studied the geological formations of South America. He noticed that fossils of extinct animals were similar to living animals in the same regions, which suggested that species could change over time. Did you know? Darwin was influenced by the work of the geologist Charles Lyell, who argued that the Earth was very old and that geological processes occurred slowly over long periods of time. Darwin's health was often poor. He suffered from a mysterious illness that caused nausea, palpitations, and fatigue for much of his adult life. Some historians believe he may have had Chagas disease, which he contracted from a bug bite during his voyage on the Beagle. Despite his illness, Darwin continued his research and published many books. Fun fact: Darwin was a devoted family man and had ten children with his wife Emma Wedgwood, who was his cousin. He was deeply saddened by the death of several of his children. Darwin's domestic life was a source of comfort and stability, and he often worked from his study at his home, Down House, in Kent, England. His perseverance in the face of illness and tragedy is a testament to his dedication to science.

Darwin's theory of evolution was not immediately accepted. Many scientists and religious leaders rejected it because it contradicted the biblical account of creation. However, over time, the evidence for evolution grew, and it became the accepted scientific explanation for the diversity of life. Did you know? One of the most famous debates about evolution occurred between Thomas Huxley and the Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce, in 1860. When Wilberforce asked Huxley whether he descended from an ape on his grandfather's or grandmother's side, Huxley replied that he would rather be descended from an ape than from someone who used his position to suppress scientific truth. Huxley's defense of Darwin's theory was a turning point in the acceptance of evolution in Victorian England.
