The alphabet is a set of letters that we use to write words. The English alphabet has 26 letters. Each letter has a name and one or more sounds. Letters can be uppercase (capital letters like A, B, C) or lowercase (small letters like a, b, c). Learning the alphabet is the first step to learning how to read and write! How many letters are in the English alphabet?

Uppercase A is big and tall. Lowercase a is small. The uppercase version of "a" is "A".

Letters come in two forms: uppercase and lowercase. Uppercase letters are also called capital letters. We use uppercase letters at the beginning of a sentence, for names (like John or Sarah), and for the word "I". Lowercase letters are used for the rest of the letters in a sentence. Look at these letters: A a B b C c. Which one is the uppercase version of the letter "a"?

Look at the alphabet order: A, B, C, D, E. After C comes D.

Let us practice the first five letters of the alphabet. The alphabet starts with A, B, C, D, E. After A comes B. After B comes C. After C comes D. After D comes E. What letter comes after C?

The letter M has two tall peaks that look like mountains. The other letters shown are N (which looks like a gate), W (which looks like two V shapes), and V (which looks like a point).

Look at this letter: M. This is the uppercase letter M. The lowercase version is "m". The letter M makes the sound /m/ like in "mouse", "monkey", and "milk". Can you find the letter M in this group?

The word "sun" starts with the letter S. Say it: S-s-sun. The other words start with different letters – dog starts with D, cat starts with C, fish starts with F.

Look at this letter: S. This is the uppercase letter S. The lowercase version is "s". The letter S makes the sound /s/ like in "sun", "snake", and "sandwich". Which word starts with the letter S?

After T comes U. Remember: T, U, V – T is followed by U.

Let us practice more alphabet order! The alphabet goes: ... Q, R, S, T, U, V, W ... What letter comes right after T?

Uppercase P looks like a big circle with a line. Lowercase p looks like a small circle with a line that goes down below the line.

Each uppercase letter has a matching lowercase letter. They look different, but they are the same letter. For example, uppercase B matches lowercase b. Uppercase D matches lowercase d. Which lowercase letter matches uppercase P?

The vowels are A, E, I, O, U. O is one of the vowels. The other letters shown are consonants.

The alphabet has two kinds of letters: vowels and consonants. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U (and sometimes Y). Every other letter is a consonant. Vowels are special because you can say them with your mouth open – try saying A, E, I, O, U! Consonants are made by closing or touching your mouth in some way. Which of these letters is a vowel?

The alphabet ends with Z. After Y comes Z, and then there are no more letters.

The alphabet ends with the letters V, W, X, Y, Z. After V comes W. After W comes X. After X comes Y. After Y comes Z. What is the very last letter of the alphabet?

The alphabet order is A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Between C and E comes D.
