Phonics teaches you the sounds of letters so you can sound out and read words you have never seen before.

Phonics is learning the sounds that letters make. When you know the sounds of letters, you can put them together to read words. For example, the letter B makes the /b/ sound like in "ball". The letter C makes the /k/ sound like in "cat". Phonics helps you figure out new words by sounding them out. What does phonics help you do?

Say each word: "bunny" starts with /b/. "Mouse" starts with /m/. "Sun" starts with /s/. "Fish" starts with /f/.

The letter B makes the /b/ sound. It is a popping sound made by pressing your lips together and then opening them. Words like "ball", "bat", "baby", and "bubble" start with the /b/ sound. Which of these words starts with the /b/ sound?

Turtle starts with T-t-turtle. Hat ends with T, but we are looking for the beginning sound. Cat starts with C. Dog starts with D.

The letter T makes the /t/ sound. Put your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth, then let go with a little puff of air. Words like "tiger", "table", "tooth", and "turtle" start with the /t/ sound. Which of these pictures starts with the /t/ sound?

Mouse starts with M-m-mouse. House starts with H. Louse starts with L. Grouse starts with G.

The letter M makes the /m/ sound. Press your lips together and hum through your nose. Words like "moon", "monkey", "milk", and "mother" start with the /m/ sound. Which word starts with the /m/ sound?

Snake starts with Ssssnake. Cake starts with C. Lake starts with L. Bake starts with B.

The letter S makes the /s/ sound. Put your teeth together and hiss like a snake: sssss. Words like "sun", "snake", "sand", and "sister" start with the /s/ sound. Which word starts with the /s/ sound?

Cat starts with C and makes the /k/ sound. Kite also makes /k/ but starts with K. Circle makes the soft C /s/ sound. City also makes the soft C /s/ sound.

The letter C often makes the /k/ sound, like in "cat". This is called a hard C. (C can also make the /s/ sound, like in "circle" – that is a soft C.) Words like "cat", "car", "cup", and "candy" start with the hard C /k/ sound. Which word starts with the /k/ sound from the letter C?

Fish starts with Fffish. Dish starts with D. Wish starts with W. Swish starts with Sw.

The letter F makes the /f/ sound. Bite your bottom lip gently and blow air out. Words like "fish", "fan", "flower", and "frog" start with the /f/ sound. Which word starts with the /f/ sound?

Apple has the short A sound – /a/. Egg has the short E sound. Ice has the long I sound. Octopus has the short O sound.

Vowels have short sounds and long sounds. The short A sound is /a/ like in "apple". Open your mouth wide and say "aaaa". Words like "ant", "ax", "alligator", and "animal" start with the short A sound. Which word has the short A sound?

Say each sound slowly: mmm-aaa-t. Then say them faster: mat.

Blending is putting letter sounds together to read a word. For example, to read "dog", you say each sound: /d/ /o/ /g/ – then blend them together: d-o-g – dog! Let us practice. What word do you get when you blend these sounds: /m/ /a/ /t/?

Say "pig": ppp-iii-g. The last sound you hear is /g/.

Phonics is not just about beginning sounds – it is also about ending sounds! Listen to the word "bed". The last sound you hear is /d/. What is the ending sound in the word "pig"? Say it slowly: p-i-g. The last sound is?

📚 Fun fact: The word “phonics” comes from the Greek word “phōnē” which means “sound” or “voice”. The same root gives us words like “telephone” (far sound), “symphony” (together sound), and “microphone” (small sound). When you learn phonics, you are learning the sounds that make up all the words we speak and read!
