The minus sign tells you to take away some from the total.

Subtraction is when you take away some objects from a group to find out how many are left. When we subtract, we use a special symbol called the minus sign (-). For example, if you have 5 cookies and you eat 2 of them, you can subtract: 5 - 2 = 3. You have 3 cookies left! What does the minus sign (-) mean in a math problem?

Start with 9 balloons. Take away 4. Count the ones left: 1,2,3,4,5. 5 balloons remain.

Let us subtract using pictures! There are 9 balloons: 🎈 🎈 🎈 🎈 🎈 🎈 🎈 🎈 🎈. Then 4 balloons float away. How many balloons are left? You can cross out the 4 that float away, then count what remains. 9 - 4 = ?

Taking away nothing does not change the number. 6 - 0 = 6.

Here is a special rule: When you subtract zero from any number, the number stays the same! Zero means "nothing." If you have 6 toys and you take away 0 toys, you still have 6 toys. So 6 - 0 = ?

When you take away all the cookies, there are none left. 8 - 8 = 0.

What happens when you subtract a number from itself? For example, if you have 8 cookies and you eat all 8 cookies, how many are left? 8 - 8 = ?

7 - 3 = 4. Alex has 4 more cars than Ben.

Subtraction can also tell you how many more one number is than another. For example, "How many more books does Tom have than Maria?" If Tom has 9 books and Maria has 4 books, you subtract: 9 - 4 = 5. Tom has 5 more books. So subtraction helps us compare! Alex has 7 toy cars. Ben has 3 toy cars. How many more cars does Alex have than Ben? 7 - 3 = ?

If 4 + 6 = 10, then 10 - 4 = 6 and 10 - 6 = 4. Start with 10 and subtract one of the addends.

Fact families show how addition and subtraction are related! For the numbers 3, 5, and 8, here is the fact family: 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 - 3 = 5, 8 - 5 = 3. If you know that 4 + 6 = 10, what is the related subtraction fact that starts with 10?

Start at 10. Jump left to 9 (1), 8 (2), 7 (3), 6 (4). You land on 6.

A number line helps you subtract by "counting back." To subtract 8 - 3 on a number line, you start at 8 and make 3 jumps to the LEFT: 8 → 7 (jump 1), → 6 (jump 2), → 5 (jump 3). You land on 5. So 8 - 3 = 5. If you start at 10 and make 4 jumps to the left, what number do you land on?

15 cupcakes - 6 cupcakes = ? 15 - 6 = 9.

Let us try a real-world word problem! A bakery has 15 cupcakes. They sell 6 cupcakes. How many cupcakes are left at the bakery? (Hint: Subtract the ones sold from the total.)

8 + 6 = 14. Yes! So 14 - 6 = 8 is correct.

Here is a great trick: You can use addition to check if your subtraction answer is correct! For example, 12 - 5 = 7. To check, add the answer (7) to the number you subtracted (5): 7 + 5 = 12. That matches the starting number! So it is correct. You try: 14 - 6 = 8. Check by adding: 8 + 6 = ? Does it equal 14?

17 - 10 = 7, but 10 is 1 more than 9, so we subtracted 1 extra. Add back 1: 7 + 1 = 8.

You are almost a subtraction expert! Let us try a bigger fact. A pet store has 17 goldfish. They sell 9 goldfish. How many goldfish are left? 17 - 9 = ? (Hint: Think about 17 - 10 = 7, then add back 1 because we subtracted 1 extra.)
