Animal Kingdom: Interactive Lesson on Animals and Classification

Explore animal groups, habitats, and characteristics through fun and educational science activities. This comprehensive quiz covers: what animals are (living things that eat other organisms, move, have sensory organs), vertebrates (animals with backbones, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish), mammals (fur/hair, milk, warm-blooded, like whales), birds (feathers, beaks, lay eggs, like penguins), reptiles (scaly skin, cold-blooded, like turtles), amphibians (smooth moist skin, metamorphosis, like frogs), fish (gills, fins, scales, like salmon), invertebrates (animals without backbones, like spiders), insects (six legs, three body parts), and animal classification review (mammals have fur and produce milk). Perfect for grades 4-6.

A dog is an animal. It eats food, moves, has a backbone (vertebrate), and has sensory organs. A sunflower is a plant. A mushroom is a fungus. A rock is non-living.

Animals are living things that eat other organisms for energy, move on their own, and have sensory organs (eyes, ears, etc.). Animals are a kingdom of multicellular (many-celled) organisms. Unlike plants, animals cannot make their own food; they are consumers. The animal kingdom is divided into two main groups: vertebrates (with backbones) and invertebrates (without backbones). Which of these is an animal?

A frog is a vertebrate (amphibian). It has a backbone. Insects (like grasshoppers) are invertebrates (no backbone). Spiders are arachnids (invertebrates). Worms are also invertebrates.

Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone (spine). The five main classes of vertebrates are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The backbone is made of vertebrae (small bones) that protect the spinal cord. Vertebrates make up only about 5% of animal species, but they include the largest animals (whales) and the most familiar (dogs, cats, humans). Which animal is a vertebrate?

A whale is a mammal. It breathes air, has a tiny amount of hair, gives birth to live young, and feeds its calves milk. Even though it lives in the ocean, it is not a fish.

Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates that have fur or hair, produce milk to feed their young, and usually give birth to live young (except monotremes like the platypus). Mammals include familiar animals like dogs, cats, horses, cows, elephants, whales, bats, and humans. There are about 5,500 species of mammals. Which animal is a mammal?

A penguin is a bird. Penguins cannot fly, but they are excellent swimmers. They have feathers, beaks, and lay eggs. Bats are mammals (not birds). Butterflies are insects. Snakes are reptiles.

Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates with feathers, beaks (no teeth), wings, and they lay hard-shelled eggs. Most birds can fly, but some cannot (ostrich, penguin, kiwi). There are about 10,000 species of birds. Birds have hollow bones that make them lightweight for flight. Which animal is a bird?

A turtle is a reptile. It has scaly skin, is cold-blooded, lays eggs (on land), and has a backbone. Frogs are amphibians. Salmon are fish. Worms are invertebrates.

Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates with dry, scaly skin. They lay leathery eggs (or give live birth in some species). Reptiles include snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles, alligators, and the tuatara. Reptiles are ectothermic (rely on external heat to regulate body temperature). They bask in the sun to warm up. Which animal is a reptile?

A frog is an amphibian. It starts as a tadpole (lives in water, breathes with gills, has a tail) and metamorphoses into an adult frog (lives on land, breathes with lungs, has legs).

Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates that start their lives in water (with gills) and later develop lungs to live on land. Frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts are amphibians. The word "amphibian" means "double life." Amphibians have smooth, moist skin (not scaly). They undergo metamorphosis (tadpole to frog). Which animal is an amphibian?

A salmon is a fish. It lives in water, breathes with gills, has fins, and has scales. Whales and dolphins are mammals (not fish). Jellyfish are invertebrates (not fish, despite their name).

Fish are vertebrates that live in water, breathe with gills, have fins for swimming, and are covered with scales. Fish are the most diverse group of vertebrates (over 34,000 species). They can be found in nearly every aquatic habitat (oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds). Which animal is a fish?

A spider is an invertebrate (arachnid). It has no backbone, has an exoskeleton (hard outer covering), and eight legs. Ants (insects) are also invertebrates. Frogs are vertebrates.

Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone. They make up about 95% of all animal species. Major groups of invertebrates include insects (beetles, butterflies, ants), arachnids (spiders, scorpions), crustaceans (crabs, lobsters), mollusks (snails, clams, octopus), worms (earthworms, leeches), jellyfish, and sponges. Which animal is an invertebrate?

Insects have six legs. Arachnids (spiders) have eight legs. Crustaceans (crabs, lobsters) have ten legs (decapods). Centipedes have many legs.

Insects are invertebrates with six legs, three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), and usually two pairs of wings. They have an exoskeleton and antennae. Insects are the most diverse group of animals (over 1 million described species). Examples: butterflies, beetles, ants, bees, grasshoppers, dragonflies, and flies. How many legs do insects have?

Mammals have fur or hair, produce milk to feed their young, and are endothermic (warm-blooded). Humans, dogs, whales, and bats are mammals.

Let us review animal classification. Animals are classified into vertebrates (with backbone) and invertebrates (without backbone). Vertebrates are divided into five classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Which class of animals has fur or hair, produces milk, and is warm-blooded?

🐋 Fun fact: The blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on Earth – even bigger than the largest dinosaurs! Blue whales can grow up to 100 feet (30 meters) long and weigh as much as 200 tons (400,000 pounds). Their heart alone is the size of a small car (about 1,000 pounds) and can be heard beating from 2 miles away. A blue whale\’s tongue weighs as much as an elephant. They eat up to 4 tons of krill (tiny shrimp-like animals) per day. Despite their size, blue whales are filter feeders (not predators). They are also the loudest animals on Earth – their calls can reach 188 decibels and travel for hundreds of miles underwater!
