Learn About Plants: Interactive Science Lesson for Kids

Explore plant parts, growth, and life cycles through interactive questions and explanations designed for young learners. This fun and friendly science quiz teaches children all about the amazing world of plants! Students will discover what plants are (living things that make their own food), learn the five main parts of a plant: roots (anchor the plant and take in water), stem (supports the plant and carries water and food), leaves (make food through photosynthesis using sunlight, water, and air), flower (makes seeds and attracts pollinators), and seeds (grow into new plants). The quiz covers what plants need to survive (sunlight, water, air, soil, space), how seeds germinate (the root comes out first), why plants are important for animals (food, oxygen, shelter, medicine), the difference between deciduous trees (lose leaves in fall) and evergreen trees (stay green all year), and the complete plant life cycle from seed to germination to seedling to adult plant to flowers to seeds again. Each question includes colorful explanations and friendly hints perfect for kindergarten, first, and second grade students. Designed for grades K-2, this lesson builds foundational science skills for understanding botany and the natural world. Complete all 10 questions and become a plant expert!

A sunflower grows in the ground, has leaves and a stem, and makes its own food. That is a plant.

Plants are living things that grow in the ground. They are different from animals because they make their own food using sunlight, water, and air. Plants give us oxygen to breathe, food to eat, and shade on hot days. There are many kinds of plants – from tiny mosses to giant redwood trees. Which of these is a plant?

Think about what a plant needs from the soil. The roots reach down into the dirt to find water and minerals.

A plant has different parts that each do an important job. The roots grow underground. Their job is to hold the plant in the ground and take in water and nutrients from the soil. Without roots, the plant would fall over and get thirsty! What is the main job of a plant's roots?

The stem connects the roots to the leaves. It is like a straw that moves water up and a tube that moves food down.

The stem is the part of the plant that stands up above the ground. It holds the leaves up toward the sun. It also carries water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves, and carries food from the leaves down to the rest of the plant. What is the main job of a plant's stem?

Leaves use sunlight (energy from the sun), carbon dioxide (from the air), and water (from the roots) to make food.

The leaves are the food-making factories of the plant. They use sunlight, air (carbon dioxide), and water to make food through a process called photosynthesis. Leaves are usually flat and wide to catch as much sunlight as possible. What do leaves need to make food for the plant?

Flowers are not just pretty – they have an important job. They make seeds so new plants can grow.

The flower is the part of the plant that makes seeds. Flowers are often colorful and smell nice to attract bees, butterflies, and other insects. When these insects visit flowers, they carry pollen from one flower to another – this is called pollination. After pollination, the flower can grow seeds. What is the main job of a flower?

Plants use sunlight to make their own food through photosynthesis. Without sunlight, they cannot make food.

Like all living things, plants need certain things to survive and grow. They need sunlight for energy, water to drink, air (carbon dioxide) to make food, and soil (or nutrients) to get minerals. They also need space to grow. If you forget to water a plant, it will wilt (droop) and may die. What do plants need the most from the sun?

The first thing that comes out of a seed is a tiny root. It grows down into the soil to find water.

A seed is like a tiny baby plant in a protective shell. Inside the seed is everything the plant needs to start growing – a tiny root, a tiny stem, and stored food. When a seed gets water, warmth, and air, it begins to germinate (sprout). First, a tiny root grows down. Then a tiny stem grows up toward the light. What is the first thing that comes out of a seed when it starts to grow?

Plants release oxygen into the air during photosynthesis. We breathe that oxygen to stay alive.

Plants are very important for animals – including humans! Plants give us food (fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts), oxygen to breathe (through photosynthesis), shelter (homes for birds and animals), medicine (many medicines come from plants), and materials (wood for houses, cotton for clothes). Which of these is something plants give us?

Evergreen trees have leaves that look like needles. They do not lose them in the fall, so they stay green all year.

There are two main kinds of trees: deciduous and evergreen. Deciduous trees lose all their leaves in the fall and grow new leaves in the spring. Examples: oak, maple, and apple trees. Evergreen trees keep their leaves (needles) all year round. Examples: pine, fir, and spruce trees. Which type of tree stays green all winter?

Every plant starts as a seed. Inside the seed is a tiny baby plant waiting to grow.

A plant goes through a life cycle – a series of stages from seed to adult plant to seed again. The stages are: (1) seed, (2) germination (sprouting), (3) seedling (baby plant), (4) adult plant (growing flowers), (5) pollination, (6) seed formation, and (7) seed dispersal (seeds spread to new places). Then the cycle starts over. What is the first stage of a plant's life?

🌻 Fun fact: The tallest tree in the world is a coast redwood named Hyperion in California. It is 379 feet tall – that is taller than the Statue of Liberty (305 feet) and almost as tall as the Big Ben clock tower (320 feet)! It is about 600-800 years old. Some trees can live for thousands of years – the oldest known tree is a bristlecone pine in California named Methuselah, which is over 4,800 years old!
