🦏 Fun fact: The last male northern white rhino, named Sudan, died in 2018 at the age of 45. Before his death, conservationists collected his sperm to use for in vitro fertilization (IVF). There are only two surviving northern white rhinos left – both females (Najin and Fatu). Scientists are working to create northern white rhino embryos using sperm from deceased males and eggs from the females, which will be implanted into southern white rhino surrogates (a close relative). If successful, this could bring the northern white rhino back from the brink of extinction. It is a race against time.
