🔬 Fun fact: The structure of DNA was discovered in 1953, but the genetic code (how DNA encodes proteins) was cracked in the 1960s. The first successful gene therapy (treating a genetic disease by inserting a working gene) was performed in 1990 on a 4-year-old girl with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). She is now an adult and still alive! Gene therapy has since been used to treat cancer, hemophilia, blindness, and other disorders. The CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool (discovered in 2012) has revolutionized genetic engineering.
