Morning Bus Ride

Listen to a commuter’s bus trip; answer 10 questions about stops, ticketing, delays, and passenger interactions. Use the speaker icon on the upper left to listen to the essay.

Every weekday morning, Daniel takes the number 24 bus from Oak Street to his office downtown. Last Thursday, he left home at 7:15 a.m. and arrived at the bus stop just as the bus doors were closing. Fortunately, the driver noticed him running and reopened the doors. Daniel tapped his travel card to pay the two-dollar fare and sat near the back beside an elderly passenger reading a newspaper. About fifteen minutes later, the bus stopped unexpectedly because of road construction near River Bridge. The driver announced a ten-minute delay and suggested that passengers transferring to the subway at Central Station might miss their connections. During the wait, a woman carrying grocery bags asked Daniel for help finding Maple Avenue, and he explained that she needed to get off three stops later. Once the road reopened, the bus continued normally and Daniel reached downtown at 8:05 a.m., slightly later than usual but still in time for his morning meeting.

Which bus does Daniel usually take to work?

What time did Daniel leave home last Thursday?

What did the driver do when he saw Daniel running?

How much was the bus fare?

Who was sitting beside Daniel on the bus?

Why did the bus stop unexpectedly?

How long was the announced delay?

Which location was the woman trying to find?

How many stops later did Daniel say the woman should get off?

What time did Daniel finally arrive downtown?

These quiz series are designed to help students improve their listening comprehension and reading comprehension skills by presenting short spoken or written paragraphs, followed by questions that test understanding of main ideas, details, inferences, and vocabulary in context.

They focus on real-life scenarios including academic lectures, daily conversations, news briefs, workplace announcements, and narrative passages — preparing learners for the listening sections of major English exams as well as practical communication. The quizzes are suitable for ESL students at intermediate to advanced levels, test-takers preparing for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge, PTE, Duolingo, CELPIP  or OET or SAT Test, and anyone looking to sharpen their aural comprehension and note-taking skills.

Each quiz presents a short paragraph (30–90 seconds when spoken, or a few sentences when read). Learners listen to or read the passage, then answer multiple-choice questions that may ask about:

  • The main idea or purpose of the passage
  • Specific facts, numbers, dates, or names mentioned
  • The speaker’s attitude, opinion, or tone
  • Cause and effect relationships
  • Inferences and implied meaning
  • Vocabulary meaning from context

Tests are presented in a multiple-choice format; only one answer is correct and will be highlighted in green once the student provides an answer. For listening mode, an audio player is embedded so users can listen as many times as needed.

These tests can be used in exam preparation courses, self-study listening practice, classroom warm-ups, homeschooling, tutoring sessions, and daily skills drills. They are all provided for free — feel free to share them with friends and colleagues to support our work.
